Thursday Jan 31 |
 | Road Run 30:53 [3] 3.6 mi (8:34 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| Rt 66N, Shaker Museum Rd and back. Quite dark - waning moon hadn't risen yet. Upper 20's. Forerunner wasn't working - low battery even tough I thought I had charged it after the last use. |
Wednesday Jan 30 |
 | Treadmill intervals 36:01 4.25 mi (8:28 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| Intervals. 6 x 2:00 @ 7:03 pace with 1:30 recovery. Treadmill or icy roads in the dark - so hard to choose. |
Monday Jan 28 |
 | Road Run 26:46 [3] 3.08 mi (8:41 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| 66S and back. 28F. A rare Monday run - dentist visit tomorrow will preclude running so I figured I'd better get it in today. |
Sunday Jan 27 |
 | Trail Run 1:16:37 [3] 8.24 mi (9:18 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB 809 |
| At Schodack Island State Park. Trails covered with snow ranging from 0" to about 2" deep, most of it fairly well settled. Ran as far south as allowed (past the gate but not past the "Restricted Area" signs) and back, staying on the eastern trail (away from the river but slightly more interesting). Low 30's, a little sun and a bit of breeze. Very little up, very little down. |
Friday Jan 25 |
 | Treadmill intervals 37:01 4.37 mi (8:28 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| Intervals - 6 x 1:45 @ 7:03/mi pace with 1:45 recovery (last one at 6:58 pace and for 2 min). I figure if I do speed work, I'll be able to make faster errors when I orienteer. :-) |
Wednesday Jan 23 |
 | Road Run 28:36 [3] 3.32 mi (8:36 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| Rt 66N to Pitt Rd and back. 28F, dark, no cacti. |

| Green Day 2 at Anza-Borrego. Flatter course with lots of wide open running. So much for learning from my mistakes. Recovered a bit quicker, but still made a big mistake doing the same things that screwed me up yesterday. Lost 5 minutes on a technical control near the end by failing to see the obvious best route choice. Had a few more "cholla experiences" to top it all off. Could've been under 50 min. I better go to a lot more A-meets this year since I need to throw these two days out. |

| Maze-O at Anza-Borrego. This was so cool - worth the trip just to do this. Walk to start was through a slot canyon, then an 8 control score-o in badlands terrain. Kept the pace slow and tried to be sure I knew where I was all the time, which I managed to do. One gnarly descent down an erosion gully but avoided any dead ends. Distance is from the Forerunner; straightline distance was about 2.2km. |

| Green course on Buttes Pass Map at Anza-Borrego SP. Good weather, good terrain, good map, really bad orienteering. Not a good debut on M55. Made a bunch of rookie mistakes - distracted by other people, didn't relocate as soon as I should have, wandered aimlessly, etc. Two major errors, a couple of small ones. Could've run about 55 min. Bleah. |

| Sprint at Anza-Borrego. Fun course in technical terrain. One big error (~4min) one smaller one. Had my first "cholla experience" on the way to the first control, then a few more later in the race. Those things are nasty. Ended up 14th male. |

 | Walking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi) | |

| Several short hikes at Joshua Tree NP. Sunny but fairly cold and windy. Temps in the lower 40's/upper 30's depending on elevation. At Key's View (a must visit location) we estimated the wind at about 40mph and it was about 35F - we didn't linger, even though it was clear enough to see the mountain near the Mexico border 85 miles away. It should be warmer at Anza-Borrego since the elevation is lower and I hope the winds will die down by Saturday. Really interesting terrain at Joshua Tree, but the rocky stuff is a bit too gnarly for orienteering. |
Tuesday Jan 15 |
 | Road Run 28:06 [3] 3.32 mi (8:28 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB 878 - #6 |
| 66N to Pitt Rd and back. 28F and with off and on snow flurries throughout the day, there were a few slippery spots. Off to the desert southwest tomorrow for the Anza-Borrego meet. |
Sunday Jan 13 |
 | Trail Run 1:19:34 [3] * 8.1 mi (9:49 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB 809 |
| Albany Pine Bush from the Discovery Center. Snow cover on about 1/3 of the trail (ranging up to maybe 6" deep, but generally packed or crusty). Upper 30''s with sun at the start. Covered most of the marked trails in this section of the Pine Bush plus a few of the unmarked ones. Lost my clip-on sunglasses (which I flipped up when it clouded up) and backtracked over a mile to the place where I suspected they had gotten knocked off, and found them!
AOWN: Crows, crows and more crows. Hundreds of them. A constant cacophony of caws. |
Saturday Jan 12 |
 | Road Run 34:53 [3] 4.07 mi (8:34 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| 66S and back. 40F and overcast. |

 | Other (Downhill Skiing) 1:00:00 [2] | |

| Downhill skiing at Gore Mtn. with Greg, Rob and Rob's college roommate. After the recent January thaw the snow was less than ideal and there were many bare spots. Still had fun since there were a few trails which were in pretty good shape due to the magic of snowmaking and grooming. Nice day with temps in the upper 30's and sun for the first half of the day. Legs tired and will be sore for a day or two since this is the first time I've been out this year. |
Tuesday Jan 8 |
 | Road Run 36:13 [3] 4.18 mi (8:39 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| 55F in January! 66N, Shaker Museum Rd to far end of cemetery and back. Legs still a bit sore from snowshoeing (mostly calves and quads). |
Sunday Jan 6 |
 | Trail Run (Snowshoe) 1:12:36 [3] * 5.34 mi (13:35 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB 809 |
| At Grafton Lakes SP. About a third on snowmobiled trails (where snowshoes weren't really needed), a third on trails well-packed by hikers and skiers, and a third on softer, deeper stuff. Walked quite a bit of the softer stuff. Also did some running without the snowshoes (entered separately). Had some hot spots on both heels which were very close to being blisters by the time I finished - need to HTFU the heels! Low 40's and mostly cloudy so the snow was soft and there were a few wet places. |
 | Trail Run 19:20 [3] * 1.87 mi (10:21 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB 809 |
| At Grafton Lakes SP. Two sections of plowed road where I took the snowshoes off and carried them (total ~0.6mi) plus a loop on snowmobiled trails after I took the snowshoes off and left them at the car. Same shoes that I wore with the snowshoes but no rubbing issues without the snowshoes. |
Saturday Jan 5 |
 | Road Run 37:01 [3] 4.24 mi (8:43 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| 66N, Albany Tpke, back via Howes and Shaker Museum Rd. 36F, overcast. |
Thursday Jan 3 |
 | Treadmill tempo 36:55 4.3 mi (8:34 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB878 - #7 |
| 2.5mi @ 7:35 pace after 1 mile warm-up. A bit of excitement in the middle of the run when the treadmill suddenly displayed "Error 23" and stopped. When the Reset button didn't fix it, I moved to the next treadmill over and continued. Hope my "WTF!?" didn't offend anyone. |
Tuesday Jan 1 |
 | Terrain Run (Snowshoe) 38:44 [3] 2.48 mi (15:36 / mi) | |
| shoes: NB 809 |
| Three laps on snowshoes around the perimeter of the back yard. First loop was breaking trail. Snow depth ranged from about 4 to 8 inches - most of it from yesterday but a fresh inch or so today. Ran/jogged most of the time but walked on some of the uphills. 36F and cloudy.
Happy New Year and Happy O-Birthday (especially to those born in years ending in 3 or 8 (and in 1973 or earlier) who are now the youngsters in their new class). |
