Thursday Jul 31 | ||
| Hiking 2:40:00 [1] 6.9 mi (23:12 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| YNP. To Fairy Falls and Imperial Geyser. An outstanding hike: a 200 ft waterfall, a really cool geyser (plus another one), a better view of Grand Prismatic Spring than you can get from the "tourist" boardwalk, and there's almost no climb.
AOWN: Heard what we think were sandhill cranes, but didn't see them.
Wednesday Jul 30 | ||
| Road Run 32:36 [3] 3.82 mi (8:31 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Morning run in Idaho Falls, ID. On straight, fairly flat roads. Sunny but cool. | ||
| Hiking 1:30:00 [2] 2.6 mi (34:37 / mi) +152m 18:12 / km | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| In Yellowstone NP. To Monument Geyser. About 500' of climb. | ||
Tuesday Jul 29 | ||
| Hiking 1:00:00 [1] 2.0 mi (29:59 / mi) | ||
| Craters of the Moon National Monument, near Arco, ID. Across lava fields (on a paved path) to explore lava tube caves. Cool! | ||
Monday Jul 28 | ||
| Note | ||
| Walking around downtown Salt Lake City sightseeing. Later went floating in the Great Salt Lake. | ||
Saturday Jul 26 | ||
| Road Run 36:59 [3] 4.3 mi (8:36 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| A mid-morning run before we head out West (5pm flight). Mid 70's and sunny - quite nice but warming up. Looking forward to the drier air out West, but will need to acclimate to the altitude. 66S, Richmond, S on Bashford to the start of the steeper climb and back. | ||
Thursday Jul 24 | ||
| Road Run intervals 46:41 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Road intervals. 8 x 400m with 1:30 recovery. These seemed more of a struggle than usual. Maybe my legs aren't recovered yet from Soapstone. Splits: 141, 133, 135,136, 137, 134, 138, 137 - Average 1:36+. Temp in the upper 70's and muggy (with ~3" of rain in the last two days, ending mid-day today). 66N with all but the first interval in flat parts.
AOWN: Saw what I think was a fisher. She(?) came out on the road ahead of me and was looking the other way so didn't take off until I was within about 30 feet. Brownish head and body, long black furry tail. Also spotted a rather large hawk perched on the wires - not a redtail, lightish coloring on the underside.

Tuesday Jul 22 | ||
| Road Run 29:58 [3] 3.53 mi (8:28 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Almost bagged running since it was raining but the rain stopped just in time and I headed out. Legs still a bit sore from Sunday (mostly lower legs, must've been landing on the forefoot on the downhills with the calves tightened up). Finally started to feel OK on the return. 66N, Albany Tpke and back. Upper 60's but still quite humid. | ||
Sunday Jul 20 | ||
| Trail Run race 59:27 | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Soapstone Assault trail race in Shenipsit SF near Somers, CT. A low key, fun race involving 6 ascents of Soapstone Mtn. The final ascent has a substantial part where the slope is about 30%! The race finishes at the top of the observation tower on top of the mountain,. I counted 1640 ft of total climb from the topo map (race announcement claimed 1800', but I got my money's worth with just 1640'). Handicapped by age and gender, so I got to start 7 minutes ahead of the young guys and 47 seconds ahead of the fastest women. A hot and humid day, nearly 80 degrees with the dew point near 70. Trails were quite dry so the footing was very good (but plenty of rocks and roots)
Finished 5th overall, 4th male. One 18 year old XC runner missed one of the ascents or he would've beaten us all. I was the fifth starter and managed to pass all those who started ahead of me but got passed by four others, including Deb Livingston who caught me halfway up the second ascent (starting 47 seconds behind). I think she ended up second overall, having been caught just before the final ascent. Splits (around, up, down - climb, distance) 1. 136, 416, 247 - 310', 0.74mi 2. 352, 529, 305 - 350', 1.06 3. 135, 516, 340 - 240', 1.04 4. 125, 422, 236 - 210', 0.66 5. 645, 314, 154 - 220' , 1.06 6. 140, 556 - 310', 0.48 Spent 10 -20 seconds each at the water stops at the top of ascents 3, 4, and 5.
Friday Jul 18 | ||
| Trail Run 45:14 [3] 4.04 mi (11:11 / mi) +230m 5:55 / km | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| South from Olivia's overlook on the Charcoal and Walsh trails plus some out and back excursions to investigate some other trails. First half mile or so descends about 300 feet, then the trail climbs 550 feet in the next 1.4mi. Walked some of the uphill, partly because it was wet and rain on the glasses cut the visibility. About 5 minutes into the run I heard the first rumble of thunder and the rain started about 5 minutes later. Rained hard for a while then let up but rained hard again just after I got back to the car. Glad I hadn't chosen to run the Ridge trail. Don't know what the temperature was since I don't have a fancy car with dashboard thermometer. I do know that the air temperature and dew point were the same for a while, and that was probably about 70F. | ||
Wednesday Jul 16 | ||
| Road Run intervals 41:35 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Road intervals. 7.5 x 400m with 1:30 recovery. Plan was to do 8 but it was pretty darn hot and I bagged the last one after ~200m. An extra 30 seconds recovery time after the fifth one to drink some water. Splits: 140 (uphill), 134, 135, 132, 133, 134, 137, 145 (first 200m in 48). Temp was 85F but humidity not too bad. Rt. 66N with all but the first one in the flat part. | ||
Monday Jul 14 | ||
| Road Run 26:16 [3] 3.08 mi (8:31 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Road run to try to loosen up the leg muscles (mostly tight hamstrings, down near the knees) and it was too nice a day not to run. 77F and sunny. 66S and back. | ||
Saturday Jul 12 | ||
| Event: CENTRAL NEW YORK ROGAINE XVIII | ||
| Orienteering long 5:51:00 [2] *** 15 km (23:24 / km) +700m 18:58 / km | ||
| shoes: NB 804 - Size 10 | ||
| CNYO Rogaine on Hammond Hill (and Yellow Barn and Robinson Hollow SF). 6 hours as team "Ramble On" with Janet. The straight line distance we covered was about 15km with about 700m of climb. Actual hiking distance was just over 12 miles. Scored 626 points (out of 2544 possible), visiting 11 controls. We would have had 25 more points but I think the bag was mis-hung and we went on after about 10 minutes of double checking where we thought it should be. Woods were thick in places, some of the trails were a bit flaky, and a few controls were "bag in the woods", but at least in the center of what was circled. A hot day but quite bearable in the woods and with a slight breeze, better than expected. Thanks to the CNYO crew for putting on a fun event. | ||
Thursday Jul 10 | ||
| Road Run intervals (Intervals) 42:02 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||

Wednesday Jul 9 | ||
| Road Run 26:42 [3] 3.09 mi (8:38 / mi) | ||

Tuesday Jul 8 | ||
| Trail Run 42:03 [3] 4.17 mi (10:05 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| At Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Wasn't as hot as the doom and gloom weather forecasters had predicted, but it was still warm (low 80's) and quite humid. Sure glad I had the sense to run in the woods rather than on a track in the sun. ;-) Ran on quite a bit of single track and up (and down) lots of hills (~160m climb). | ||
Sunday Jul 6 | ||
| Trail Run 1:04:29 [3] 6.27 mi (10:16 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Trail run at the Bird Sanctuary in Old Chatham. Hillier than what I've done over the last week or so (about 500 ft of climb). Covered most of the trails, including those which aren't actually in the property. About 80 but humidity wasn't too bad (or I'm getting used to it). | ||
Friday Jul 4 | ||
| Road Run 37:42 [3] 4.22 mi (8:55 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Another morning run from the in-laws condo. About 1.5mi on the Nature Trail (the full length of the trail) but the rest on asphalt or concrete. | ||
Thursday Jul 3 | ||
| Trail Run 44:49 [3] 4.98 mi (8:59 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Mostly on the Nature Trail from the in-laws condo in southern DE. About a mile at the end on paved stuff. An early morning run (7am) - took a while to loosen up. Low 70's and humid. | ||
Tuesday Jul 1 | ||
| Road Run tempo 48:49 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Tempo run on the roads in New Holland, PA. 2.5 mi in 18:36 (7:26 pace). Mostly flat. | ||
