Orienteering 2:15:28 [3] *** 10.7 km (12:40 / km) +195m 11:36 / km
spiked:21/27c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

Extra-long course at CNYO event on Klondike State Forest map. The area is fairly technical glacial terrain with some trails. Course was a combination of a longish Green course (similar to the NAOC course I ran here a year ago - 6.8km, 110m climb, 16 controls) and an Orange course (3.9km, 85m, 11c) with a map exchange. Overconfidence from the knowledge that I had run the course before led to significant errors on 3 of the first 4 controls followed by smaller errors on 5, 6 and 7. Then I focused on the task at hand and did much better for the rest. Probably had 15 - 20 minutes worth of errors. Temperature in the 60's with wet woods from an earlier shower. Marshes were quite wet for the end of August. Forerunner measured 14.3km. Took a fall about halfway through the first loop and banged my left knee which will leave a bruise but hopefully no lasting damage.

Orienteering 1:21:14 [3] **** 6.56 km (12:23 / km)
spiked:16/17c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

Playing on the Salmon River Fish Hatchery map in Altmar, NY. Glacial terrain. Used a copy of the 1:10000 map from the 2008 North American Champs with the controls from Green Y and Brown courses marked on it. Visited most of the controls from both courses plus a few uncircled points. No streamers or markers out there but only had trouble confirming my location on one of the more subtle points. Kept good contact most of the time but of course was not under competition pressure. Good training session on a great map with mostly really nice woods. Temperature about 70F with rain and a bit of thunder towards the end of the session. Somewhat reminiscent of the NAOC event where it rained the whole time I was out.

Road Run 35:57 [3] 4.04 mi (8:54 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

Run in the morning before heading off to start the wedding festivities. Syring Rd, Albany Tpke north to the milepost and back. Upper 60's so much cooler than it's been, but I still don't like running first thing in the morning.

Too darn hot. About 85F at 6pm when I ran with dew point in the upper 60's. Third or fourth day in a row of this stuff. Ready for Fall. :-) 66S and back.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 1:00:00 [1] *** 6.28 mi (9:33 / mi)
shoes: NB 874

Checking control locations at Five Rivers Env. Ed. Ctr. for event on 9/13. Also did some map updating. Actual time was almost 4 hrs but a bunch of that was spent not moving much. Vegetation is quite complex and changes often since the area is actively managed for wildlife. I think the original map used USGS contours, so every time I set courses here I try to put on features which didn't get captured on previous versions. There's a heavy trail network so most control locations are orange or easier. Sunny and in the 80's so it was hot (and buggy). Now I have to see if I can decipher my field notes to modify the map.

Orienteering (Rogaine) 5:40:00 [2] ** 13.5 mi (25:11 / mi)
spiked:8/10c shoes: NB 809

CNYO Rogaine near Pharsalia, NY with Janet as Team "Ramble On" in coed 6 hr category.

Nice day for rogaining with temperatures in the 70's and partly cloudy. We had a pretty good run (walking mostly), getting all the controls we had originally planned to get. The woods were a bit nasty around the 3rd, 4th and 5th controls we did, which slowed us down and raised some doubt as to whether we'd be able to stick to our plan. Fortunately the woods were much better in the second half. Most of the nastiness was around an area of tornado damage from several years ago plus areas of mature forest where the undergrowth was prickly stuff and/or ferns which obscured what was underfoot.

Here's a copy of our route. We went clockwise, starting with 91 and finishing with 92. On controls 72 and 92 we were a bit off on our bearings and had to correct (turned the right way both times). All other controls we hit pretty cleanly. The route coming out of 74 was to avoid some more recent blowdown which was not mapped. Woods were nasty from north of 72 until we got to the road west of 90. At 75 we knew where the control was but took the circuitous route to get across the "marsh" (pond) without having to go more than knee deep (although Janet did find one spot a bit deeper).

We ended up with 782 points visiting 10 controls (out of ~3300 possible, 45 controls). That was good enough for 1st in the coed category and was the most anyone doing just 6 hrs got (the field was rather small, ~10 teams).

We covered about 13.5 miles actual distance. Straightline distance was about 16.5 km, just over 20min/km. Climb was only about 275m, none of it very long or steep.

Trail Run hills 57:27 [3] 5.26 mi (10:55 / mi) +300m 9:17 / mi
shoes: NB 874

At Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Ran pretty much the perimeter of the trail system, including the southwest part which I rarely visit because it's a big, steep hill. Tried to push on the uphills but was relegated to walking several times. Nice day with fairly low humidity, sun and in the 70's. Trails were muddy in lots of places.

Road Run 31:51 [3] 3.62 mi (8:48 / mi)

Richmond Rd to Bashford Rd and back. 80F and humid.

Trail Run 1:17:12 [3] 6.24 mi (12:22 / mi) +200m 11:15 / mi
shoes: NB 874

From Olivia's Overlook south along the ridge of Stockbridge Mountain and back. Turned around at about 3 miles (and at a puddle in the trail which I didn't feel like navigating around). Trail is pretty gnarly after reaching the ridge with many ups and downs, much exposed (slippery when wet) rock and overgrown a bit in places. Had to stop a few times to figure out where the trail was (stay on the crest of the ridge always seemed to work). Sunny and about 80F and a bit cooler in the woods. Nice run with some nice views. Reached the high point on the ridge (1800' +) which I hadn't been to before (no view from there however, just a benchmark).

Hiking 30:00 [1] 1.4 mi (21:26 / mi)

A stroll at Steven's Glen (~ 1 mile from Olivia's Overlook) to see the cascade there. With the recent heavy rains we expected it to be worth the trip. Even more interesting than the cascade was a bridge on the trail crossing a smaller stream which had been covered with about 2.5 feet of rocks and gravel from the storms earlier in the week. The bridge was still standing even with all the weight on it and the stream now runs over the bridge and around either side. I think the best repair option will be to put a new bridge further upstream rather than try to dig this one out.
