Road Run 1:01:17 [3] 6.92 mi (8:51 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

25F and sunny, so quite nice (for January). A bit longer run on the roads. 66N, Albany Tpke, Pitt, Drowne, Riders Mills, 66S.

Treadmill tempo 36:55 intensity: (21:25 @3) + (15:30 @4) 4.0 mi (9:14 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

Ugh. Too cold (and a bit icy) to be outside, so the treadmill it was. Did a mile at 7:30 pace plus a two half miles at 8:00 pace with easier quarter miles in between. Still tedious.

Road Run 40:07 [3] 4.58 mi (8:46 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

N on 66 and back with a fairly bright waxing gibbous moon. Low 30's.

Snowshoe race 42:16 [5] 3.6 mi (11:44 / mi) +260m 9:35 / mi
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Curly's Record Run Snowshoe Race in Pittsfield State Forest. One of the tougher races in the series. Uphill start, about 0.5 mi of rolling single track, then climb about 650 feet in under a mile, a little bit of flat, then over 700 feet of descent in about 0.6 mi, then another 1.3 miles of rolling hills and twisty single track to the finish. Trails were mostly well packed snow so it was fast. The temperature at race time was about 30F, making it 25 - 30 degrees warmer than last year.

While the intensity for last weekend's races was about 4.5, this race was truly a 5. I beat last years time by about 50 sec. Finished 27 out of 96 overall.

Field Checking ((Snowshoe)) 2:53:00 [1] *** 5.31 mi (32:35 / mi) +200m 29:10 / mi
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Another trip to Moreau to check out another possible way down the hill. A bit more snow than on Monday (6 - 12") but not as wet and crunchier. Also colder (upper 20's). On the northeast part of the plateau. This way down is less crappy than where I went Monday (assuming 12" of snow isn't covering up too much) . Some biggish cliffs but they shouldn't be a problem for careful orienteers. Discovered an unblazed but well-used trail part way down the hill.

Also spent some time poking around in a technical area up on the plateau - should offer some interesting orienteering. Lots of rock, most of which is not (yet) on the map. Learned that a snow-covered marsh is not necessarily a frozen marsh.

66N, Shaker Museum Rd and back. 30F.

Field Checking (Snowshoe) 3:22:00 [1] *** 4.8 mi (42:05 / mi) +250m 36:13 / mi
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Took advantage of a day off, mild weather (for January), and minimal snow to do some field checking. Looked at another way to get off the plateau at Moreau SP. Kinda steep, pretty rocky, gnarly in places, some logged area for the prickers to grow in this summer - looks good :-) , but maybe not for Brown. 200m downhill run-in to the finish (but that's just the elevation change). Several inches of settled and wet snow with temperature in the upper 30s. Used a map with the contours from the photogrammetry plus some details which Mark D added from aerial photos. There's a lot more detail in the terrain (and several "boulders" on the map are rootstocks in the terrain, or small boulders under rootstocks and snow).

Snowshoe race 34:29 [5] 3.74 mi (9:13 / mi)
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Brave the Blizzard snowshoe race in Guilderland, NY (in the Albany Pine Bush). A combination of well-packed snow, ice, and bare ground which made the course quite fast. Fortunately bare ground in the Pine Bush is mostly sand with an occasional root but no rocks. I ran this race a year ago in 41 minutes but there was several inches of fresh snow, it was the first time I had raced on showshoes and I was on larger snowshoes than I raced in today. I was quite surprised to finish 19th out of 134 and second by two seconds to another 50+ guy. I wasn't sure that I'd be able to race two days in a row but apparently I did OK. Temperature was in the low 30's and it was mostly cloudy. And the after race refreshments included pancakes!

Note

No training for past five days due to several long work days this past week. Gotta get on the George and Lyn program. :-)

Snowshoe race 38:08 [5] 3.46 mi (11:01 / mi) +210m 9:16 / mi
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Greylock Glen Snowshoe race. Started on S side of Gould Rd due to construction around the usual start area. Downhill start, cross a bridge with a board missing, climb 180m on snowmobile and single track trails (following Peck's Brook), a more gradual long downhill on snowmobile trails, back across the bridge and uphill to the finish. Nice course. Weather was great - low 30's and sunny with no wind. Snow cover was pretty good, with only a few exposed rocks and roots. And since the snow was well packed, the course was pretty fast. Haven't seen results yet so don't know how fast.

Edit: Results - 39th out of 123, 8th out of 30 in M50-59, about 9 minutes behind the winner.

And another endorsement for Dion Snowshoes: I had a broken cleat on one of my shoes (from running on a road while orienteering last weekend?) and Bob replaced both of them in about three minutes with new, improved ones. Gotta love lifetime warranties and being able to deal directly with the owner of the company!

Road Run 39:41 [3] 4.45 mi (8:55 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #9

66S, Richmond, Reed and back. Turned around at 20 minutes. A little snow on the less used roads. Cold (20F with a breeze).

Orienteering race (Snowshoe) 1:24:24 [4] *** 5.03 mi (16:47 / mi)
spiked:24/26c shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Score-O on snowshoes at Moreau Lake SP (using the old map, since the new one doesn't really exist yet). Mostly orange level controls. Snow was not very deep, maybe 4 - 6 inches or so. Sunny but cold, with temps in the teens. Took some route choices which aren't possible in the summer (across the frozen lakes). Got all the possible controls in well under the 2 hr time limit even with lots of walking. Distance is that actually covered as measured by the Forerunner.

Snowshoe 24:22 [3] 1.95 mi (12:30 / mi)
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Around the backyard following the same loop as on Sunday. Mostly broken track but some of it had drifted over. Did the full loop twice (once in each direction) plus a shorter loop around the perimeter of the northern field. Used a headlight since it was dark. Low 20's with a breeze.

Sunday Jan 3, 2010 #

Snowshoe 27:10 intensity: (5:02 @1) + (22:08 @3) 1.75 mi (15:32 / mi)
shoes: Dion Snowshoes

Snowshoe around the backyard after rearranging the snow (mostly moving it from the driveway to somewhere not in the driveway). Ran two loops (0.77 mi each) and then walked a shorter loop. Light, fluffy snow with depth varying from about 2 to 10 inches, depending on where the wind pushed it. Breaking trail for first loop so second loop was about 30 sec faster. Still snowing with temps in the low teens and a breeze blowing. But, as PG noted, winter is almost over so better get in the snowshoeing while there's still the chance.

Road Run 36:46 [3] 4.1 mi (8:58 / mi)
shoes: NB 874

A nice wintery run: 17F with blowing snow and snow covered roads. Actually not as bad as it sounds. 66N and back. Wore trail shoes for improved traction.

Hiking 2:00:00 [1] 3.85 mi (31:10 / mi)

Two hikes in local conservation areas. 1.1 miles in Siegel-Kline Kill Conservation Area and 2.75 miles at Ooms Conservation Area at Sutherland Pond. 1 - 2" of snow on the ground, covering some icy spots. One fall but no apparent lasting damage. Overcast with temps in the mid 30's. An easy start to the New Year.
