Curly's Record Run in Pittsfield State Forest. Actually, the course was more the Turner Trail Run, going up the Turner Trail, across the top of Berry Hill, along the Taconic Crest and William Berry Way Trails and then down the road to the finish. Snow conditions were generally good, though not very deep. The road was snowmobile-packed, so very fast (i.e. ~7:30/mile pace on snowshoes).

Temperature was about 12F with an occasional breeze at the start, but it was sunny. Dressed about right, with some venting adjustments, but no real need to remove anything.

Interesting race. Several of the lead pack apparently missed the turn onto the Turner Trail, so I was passed at about the 1 mile point by people who I normally only see at the start and finish. The long downhill run on the road was pretty sweet, but probably pretty taxing on the muscles. The stretch up on the ridge from where the Turner Trail tops out until the start of the road descent was quite nice. Awaiting results.

Brave the Blizzard "Snowshoe" Race, run as a trail race since most of the snow had melted. Temperature in the low-mid 40's. Wet and a little muddy underfoot but not bad. Course has one good-sized hill (and a few smaller ones) but you get to do it twice because the race course is two loops.

Started the race with the intention of not really pushing it after having just raced yesterday. Ended up racing with two younger guys (OK they're both 55, so age-group placings were at stake). We flip-flopped for most of the course and I ended up second among the three of us, with the three of us finishing in a seven second span. Good competition. Finished 16/58 overall, 3rd 50-59 (although there were no age-group awards), and 1st in the 56+ category. And the pancake breakfast afterwards was scrumptious as usual.

Trail Run warm up/down 3:57 intensity: (8 @1) + (1:58 @2) + (1:51 @3) 0.35 mi (11:17 / mi) +3m 11:00 / mi

Constitution Hill Snowshoe Race in Lanesboro, MA. Upper 30's and about 4 or 5 inches of mushy snow. Fairly hilly course with a particularly steep climb at about 4 km. Last km to the finish mostly downhill. OK race. Flip-flopped with a few people during the race but mostly alone from the top of the ridge to the finish. Spotted Phil about 40m behind me as we started the last big climb so picked up the pace a bit. ~90 starters. Awaiting results.

Turner Trail Snowshoe Race at Pittsfield SF. A new course using some newly-made trails. Only climbed halfway up the hill, coming down the twisty Turner Trail, and then a loop around the flatter area. The hill up the road about 200m after the start is a bit brutal, but the climb after that is reasonable (i.e. I didn't have to walk much of it). A very nice course. Conditions were perfect - low 30's, some sun during the race, several inches of snow (well tracked out on the race course, but still soft in most areas).

Race went well. I got passed by a couple of people on the downhill but held position for the rest of the race (actually passed a guy in the last km, but he had stepped off the trail and was walking). Apparently I "crushed" Phil, probably due to his old age. :-)

About 80 starters. Awaiting results but I think I was in the 20 - 25th range.

Bird Sanctuary (and environs) in Old Chatham. Had been some foot traffic on the trails in some places but had to break trail in others (only 4-5" deep except in a few drifted spots). About 30F but starting to drop and a breeze started to pick up. Tried not to push the pace. Nice start to the new year.
