Orienteering race 1:12:42 [4] *** 5.76 km (12:37 / km) +160m 11:05 / km
spiked:8/11c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Green Day 2 at Anza-Borrego. Flatter course with lots of wide open running. So much for learning from my mistakes. Recovered a bit quicker, but still made a big mistake doing the same things that screwed me up yesterday. Lost 5 minutes on a technical control near the end by failing to see the obvious best route choice. Had a few more "cholla experiences" to top it all off. Could've been under 50 min. I better go to a lot more A-meets this year since I need to throw these two days out.
Orienteering 41:45 [3] **** 2.82 km (14:48 / km)
spiked:7/8c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Maze-O at Anza-Borrego. This was so cool - worth the trip just to do this. Walk to start was through a slot canyon, then an 8 control score-o in badlands terrain. Kept the pace slow and tried to be sure I knew where I was all the time, which I managed to do. One gnarly descent down an erosion gully but avoided any dead ends. Distance is from the Forerunner; straightline distance was about 2.2km.

Saturday Jan 19

Event: Anza Borrego Desert O-Fest

Orienteering race 1:37:12 [4] *** 5.2 km (18:42 / km) +215m 15:29 / km
spiked:8/12c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Green course on Buttes Pass Map at Anza-Borrego SP. Good weather, good terrain, good map, really bad orienteering. Not a good debut on M55. Made a bunch of rookie mistakes - distracted by other people, didn't relocate as soon as I should have, wandered aimlessly, etc. Two major errors, a couple of small ones. Could've run about 55 min. Bleah.
Orienteering race 27:25 [5] *** 2.7 km (10:09 / km) +125m 8:15 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Sprint at Anza-Borrego. Fun course in technical terrain. One big error (~4min) one smaller one. Had my first "cholla experience" on the way to the first control, then a few more later in the race. Those things are nasty. Ended up 14th male.

Sprint - Splits

Friday Jan 18

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
Several short hikes at Joshua Tree NP. Sunny but fairly cold and windy. Temps in the lower 40's/upper 30's depending on elevation. At Key's View (a must visit location) we estimated the wind at about 40mph and it was about 35F - we didn't linger, even though it was clear enough to see the mountain near the Mexico border 85 miles away. It should be warmer at Anza-Borrego since the elevation is lower and I hope the winds will die down by Saturday. Really interesting terrain at Joshua Tree, but the rocky stuff is a bit too gnarly for orienteering.

Tuesday Jan 15

Road Run 28:06 [3] 3.32 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
66N to Pitt Rd and back. 28F and with off and on snow flurries throughout the day, there were a few slippery spots. Off to the desert southwest tomorrow for the Anza-Borrego meet.
