Orienteering in da Bronx. HVO event at Van Cortlandt Park. A score-O with 29 controls worth a total of 1790 points with a 90 minute time limit. Got 1050 points (16 controls) plus 200 bonus points for finding the MD's compass which he had dropped while hanging controls (in was right under the marker at one of the more remote controls). Map is 18 years old so vegetation wasn't accurate and there were many new, unmapped trails. Was sloppy on several controls and even gave up on two of them. Still, it was good to get on a map in February in the Northeast (without skis). Weather was good - low 40's with the sun out, but a bit breezy. Hit snow squalls on both the drive down and back as a strong cold front moved in, so we lucked out.
Syring, Alb Tpke, Jefferson Hill, Bacchus, Pratt, 66S. Very light rain and then some snow. 35F. About half of loop is on unpaved roads, which were a little sloppy but firm.
3 x 3min + 2 x 2min @ 7:03 pace (alternating 3 and 2) plus 1 min @~6:50 with 2 min recovery between.
min/sq km value approaching infinity, using the earth surface as the reference coordinate system (i.e. neglecting the traveling through space thing - which, now that I think about it, would create a point-to-point path and thus the area would be undefined). If there's a practical value to calculating time per unit area circumscribed by a workout, I haven't figured it out yet. :-)
