Orienteering race 25:01 intensity: (15:00 @3) + (5:00 @4) + (5:01 @5) *** 1.7 km (14:43 / km) +25m 13:42 / km
spiked:9/11c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

Sprint (?) at Camp Sekani. Missed on 2 and 6 for about 9 minutes of error. Not good, although 6 and 7 didn't really fit the definition of a "sprint" control. 2 mil zip lock bags for map cases added to the experience. Still placed 7th in M55.

Forerunner measured 2.831 km.

Orienteering race 1:10:17 [4] *** 7.2 km (9:46 / km) +235m 8:24 / km

US Champs Long Distance course on Fishtrap Lake map near
Sprague, WA. Very open scabland terrain with lots of rock underfoot and many areas of complex cliff detail. Sunny and in the upper 70's with an 11:51 start made for hot conditions.

Had a very good run after the first three controls. Lost a minute on #1 not seeing the control flag when I was standing just above the cliff it was on. Overshot #2 but caught it quickly when I hit the trail beyond (and down a 2-3 contour cliff line) - ~3 minutes lost. Lost 20 or 30 seconds on #3 chasing to an adjacent feature. Then navigated well for the rest of the course.

Was 3rd overall on Green Y, 2nd in M55, but fastest US (of all Green runners!). Woohoo - US Champ!

Forerunner measured 8.512 km.

Notes of things to remember for US 2-Day Classic Champs:
- Use 4 mil plastic bags (preferably heat sealed) for map cases.
- Have enough water at control sites so that it doesn't run out.
- Offer more refreshments at the finish than just water.
- Encourage those presenting awards to use an expedited format.
- Communicate details about walk to start well before the day of the event.

US Middle Distance Champs on Moses Lake Sand Dunes Map near Moses Lake, WA. A really good run with a few mid-leg execution bobbles. Maintained contact throughout and hit all the controls well. Hot (80's) and sunny. Very sandy (i.e. soft) underfoot. Had a late start so herd paths were useful, more for identifying runnability than for navigation. Complete results are not yet available, but the time stacked up well against the other old guys.
Forerunner measured 5.97 km.

Hiking 1:30:00 [1] 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Hiking around the Bowl and Pitcher area of Riverside SP near Spokane and then later at Riverfront Park looking at the falls on the Spokane River. River flow was about 3x normal rate for end of June so pretty impressive.

shoes: NB878 - #9

66N and back. Threw in 4 x 200m at ~50sec pace with 1 min recovery - a meager attempt at getting some speed work in. Upper 60's but very muggy since it had rained earlier.
