Orienteering 35:27 [3] *** 2.1 km (16:53 / km) +125m 13:01 / km
spiked:15/16c shoes: VJ Falcons 5

HPP fundraiser event on Whistler Mountain map. Gondala ride up the mountain to the start (elev about 6000 ft). 1:5000 map in alpine terrain with lots of rock and mostly low vegetation (wore shorts and had no problem). Competition format was predict your time, so no watches allowed on the course (only tapped my wrist once trying to take a split). Seven minutes faster than predicted, so didn't take it as easy as I should have, although I walked quite a bit. Since it was wide open and everyone was doing the same course it was hard not to follow (biggins was ahead of me and he's tough to miss).

Orienteering race 16:09 [4] *** 2.56 km (6:19 / km) +13m 6:09 / km
spiked:15/16c shoes: NB 1210 "Leadville"

COC Sprint on Whistler Village map. Great sprint venue and really fun. Had a very good run with a few small errors, mostly sub-optimal route choices. Tried to be very focused on the navigation. I had a very early start time so there were not a lot of non-orienteers wandering about the Village. Most frustrating time loss was taking about 10 seconds to find the start triangle on the map. Lost time on #9 checking an unmapped boulder across the path from the mapped boulder with the flag on it. Was 5th in M55. Straightline distance 1.9 km.

Road Run warm up/down 16:33 [2] 0.97 mi (17:04 / mi) +19m 16:05 / mi

Before sprint.

Road Run warm up/down 5:51 [2] 0.54 mi (10:50 / mi) +14m 10:02 / mi

After sprint.

Orienteering race 50:09 [4] **** 3.44 km (14:35 / km) +124m 12:21 / km

COC Middle on One Duck Lake map near Whistler. Excellent map of very detailed terrain. Printed at 1:7500, which was nice. Less annoying vegetation than yesterday's training map but still slow running due to stuff on the ground (like rocks and deadfall). Lots of up and down on the course, some of it fairly steep.

Had an OK run (although there was lots of walking and plenty of stops to read the map). Lost a couple of minutes on #6 with a sub-optimal route choice and sloppy execution (adding about 4 lines of climb). Went brain dead on #11 and lost contact for about 4 min lost. Hit most of the others pretty well. Ended up 8th of 27 in M55. Straightline distance 2.6km with 170m of climb.

Training event on Lost Lake map at Whistler (not a "model" event since the mapping is different, but the terrain is relevant). Complex trail network, some steep terrain and thickish vegetation. Didn't push hard but tried to keep a reasonable pace. Sloppy on several controls but relocated quickly. Map was tough to read since they crammed lots of detail on a 1:7500 map. Straightline distance 1.8km. Hot - upper 80s.

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Walking around at UBC Botanical Gardens. Spent about 3 hours there and probably covered more than the mileage logged, but we stopped a lot to read tags identifying plants. Lots of rhodendrons, magnolias and maples in their collection (along with many Pacific Northwest big trees). Who knew that there were over 400 different kinds of rhododendron?

Walking 1:00:00 [1] ** 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Wandering around Stanley Park in Vancouver. Pretty nice place for a city park. Bright sunny day with temps in the upper 70s. Had a copy of the Stanley Park sprint map so followed along for the parts when we were on the map.

Trail Run 41:03 intensity: (1:15 @1) + (6:38 @2) + (18:10 @3) + (15:00 @4) * 6.59 km (6:14 / km) +106m 5:46 / km
ahr:137 max:152 shoes: NB 1210 "Leadville"

Stanley Park, starting at Third Beach, taking a non-direct route on gravel trails across the peninsula, and then back via the paved trail along the seawall. Gravel trails were mostly through the woods (big trees!) and uphill at the beginning. Very scenic (which is an understatement). Cooled down with a brief wade in the ocean.
