Orienteering race 1:13:08 [4] *** 8.16 km (8:57 / km) +362m 7:20 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: NB878 - #12

Red course at EMPO local event on Cole Hill map, set by Phil H-T. Some areas of really runnable woods and some a little junky but the vegetation is pretty well mapped so it's easy to avoid the worst of the slower areas. An OK run but with one bigger mistake on #10 when I got on a parallel wall about 200m away from the one I wanted. Figured it out pretty quickly but lost 3-4 minutes. Lost track of where I was for a minute on the way to #4 and missed #5 by a bit. Lost 30 or 40 seconds on the run-in bashing through junk when I missed the obvious trail route. SL distance 6.6 km. 50s and overcast with showers threatening but any rain held off until after we ran.

At Hand Hollow Conservation Area. Leaf covered trails made the roots hard to see. Upper 60's and sunny - a bonus mid-October day.
When I arrived at the parking area there was a guy sitting in his van playing a trumpet. A bit out of the ordinary.

Bands. Lots of hip work, not that I really needed it.

Road run but about 60% of it on dirt roads. Hilly. 70F and quite humid, especially for October.

Run/jog/walk to the start of the Sprint. Spent some time looking at the model map.

NAOC Sprint in Arnprior, ON. Course 3 - 3.5km, 20m climb. A fun course with 6 controls in the streets of the town, then 5 in the woods and then 7 in the park and arena. Great venue. Weather just about perfect at about 50F.

Had a pretty clean run. Lost a few seconds on #2 trying to understand where the control was placed (end of a wall) since it was hard to see the light gray wall on the map. Route choices through the streets were OK as in most cases it looks like the left or right choices are pretty even. May have saved a little on the 5-6 leg by cutting through the woods (I exited #5 to the NE) rather than take the woods trail all the way to its SW end. Was clean through the woods, which was not the case for many people. Lost about 15 seconds on #11 by not seeing that the control was at the NW foot of the knoll and ended up checking the NE side first. OK the rest of the way in except for a small hesitation on the way to 15 - should've spent some time looking at the last 5 controls in the arena while I was running the 11-12-13 legs.

Finished 4th North American in M55, 6th overall. Was 10 seconds behind coach and PG who tied for the win in M65 on the same course.

Course was about 25% too long with actual winning time of about 18:30. Other courses were closer to target winning times, but still on the long side.

To the start.

NAOC Long on Carp Ridge - Hidden Meadow Farm map. Course 7b (M55). 5.2km SL, 120m climb. Same terrain as the middle in the north half of the map and then a complex trail network in the south. The course was way short for a "long" and had lots of trail running.

Another mediocre run. Blew the route choice on the first long leg (2-3), fighting through medium green to the west of the pond immediately south of #2 which cost 2 or 3 minutes. Executed 6-7 poorly and ended up going through green and marsh rather than getting to the trail asap. Another 2 minutes. A few other 1 minute losses each on 2 and 8, so could've been about 7 minutes faster. Did well on the 4-5 and 8-9 legs, so need to be more consistent. Was 11th overall on the course, 7th North American.
