Orienteering race 30:01 intensity: (28 @1) + (11 @2) + (2:43 @3) + (21:48 @4) + (4:51 @5) *** 4.83 km (6:13 / km) +41m 5:58 / km

Night-O on a golf course, organized by Gord Hunter. At Rivermead Club de Golf in Aylmer, QE. 1:5000, 1m contours. Course 2 (4.4k), which included Men 55+ and Women 35+ (and maybe <17). Mass start with course variations (two different first controls, two loops done either cw or ccw I think and them common controls 12-16, 8 variations in total (?) with slightly different distances). Really fast (it's a golf course so even the white woods are mowed grass). A few rough open and light green areas, which along with water features and OOB areas made for some route choices. Tie for fourth overall with Marketa Graham (was at the finish first but fumbled the punch - if the timing resolution were finer she probably would've beaten me since I heard the box she punched beep first). 3rd M55 (actually all three of us are 60+). Lost about a minute on control #4 when I followed a crowd headed to a different control.

Eastern Canadian Champs Long - Course 7 (5.7k, 25m) on Notre-Dame-de-I'lle-Perrot map (1:10000, 2.5m contours). Very flat area (with lots of micro-undulations), moderate to heavy trail network and many marshes. I found the navigation to be pretty challenging since contour detail was minimal, wetter than usual weather meant a lot more marshy areas than mapped and the trails weren't always as easy to follow as one might expect. No really big errors, but probably some time loss on almost every control - felt like I was constantly working to reestablish map contact. One significant fall resulting in a sizeable egg on my left shin a few inches below the knee (caught a toe as I was jumping over a ditch). Ended up 7th (of 25) in M55+.

Cheesy Chase 5k at Oakbrook Brewery in Reading. A road race, so mostly a matter of what pain level I was willing to deal with. We entered this race for the swag - 3 servings of mac and cheese, a growler (empty, but filled for $9 more), and the usual t-shirt. Start time was 7pm but it was srill in the low 70s, so on the warm side. Race was twice around a balloon shaped loop, so lots of oppurtunity to see the rest of the field throughout the race. A few small hills (but probably more than the 4m of climb calculated by AP). Placed 87 out of 275 and about 5th M60. Time wasn't great but no speed work, a few extra lbs., and heat are my excuses. At a least I didn't have any navigational errors. :-)

Saucon rail trail in Hellertown and exploration of the Thomas Iron Site adjacent to the rail trail. Thought this was going to be more of a road run (so wore my "road shoes") but it actually had quite a bit of somewhat muddy trails down along the Saucon Creek. No apparent ruins from ironmaking, just some old concrete supports from a railroad perhaps. Some contour detail and a trail network - might be interesting for sprints but not a big enough area for longer courses. Overcast, low 70s and less humid than it's been.
