HVO/WCOC Winter Series 2021 #1 - Red course at Harriman SP. 6.5k, 220m. (Parking at the semicircular road off Rt.6 NW of the Long Mountain Circle - aka Turkey Hill Pond Trail Head). A wonderful day to be in the woods with the temperature 55F and sunny. Typical Harriman terrain with lots of rock features and plenty of bonus blueberry and other vegetation not shown on the somewhat dated map. Visibility was outstanding, making the navigation lots of fun.
A great course by Jordan Laughlin and a decent run by me. Went to the wrong hilltop on #3 but corrected quickly for about 1 minute lost. Misread the streams on the 8-9 leg which cost 1-2 minutes (and there may have been better routes for this leg than the one I tried to execute). Was a bit wide on the leg to 7 (and briefly out of map contact) but I don't think I lost much time.

Course setter’s notes:
“Advanced courses are harder than usual, technical controls combined with physically demanding terrain may be grounds to reconsider which courses to go on. Vegetation mapping is out of date. The undergrowth is very thick and thorny in places so definitely protect your legs! There may be some extra and/or missing trails in the south east part of the map.“
An accurate description of the situation (but I still did the Red course). To top things off, it started to rain and the breeze picked up about 20 minutes after I started, about an hour earlier than predicted. Temperature was about 50F, so it was a bit of an HTFU experience.
My navigation varied from very good to bad. The primary skill on many legs was compass and pace (half the controls were charcoal platforms on a broad hillside). Hit many right on. Off on distance or bearing on 5 controls, costing a total of about 25 minutes. Good practice.
