Brown course at Middle Atlantic Champs hosted by QOC at CCBC Catonsville with courses by Ted Good. 3.4k, 120m. Woods were mostly open with some scattered scratchy undergrowth, occasional large tree deadfall and some rockiness underfoot. Visibility was very good. Weather was great, especially for December, sunny and in the 40s.

So-so run with the biggest error (~2.5 min) on #3 when I went around a spur to save climb but then didn't adjust my direction after getting around. Missed a little left on the 1st control and a lot to the right on #8, although AP doesn't pick either of those up as errors. Lost time to the Finish by not finding the trail I could have taken most of the way rather than fighting undergrowth. Fourth overall on Brown but 2nd among those eligible to score points for the Mid Atlantics.

Sprint Relay at Middle Atlantic Champs. On a 9-point team with Ernie Schubert (1st Leg) and Angelica (3rd Leg), so we got a 12 minute head start over the 3-point teams and 6 minutes over the 6-point teams. This was a campus sprint on a pretty simple campus but course setter Ted Good did a nice job giving us route choices and tucking controls into nooks and crannies. And the campus is pretty hilly, so plenty of climb. Leg 2 was 2.8k, 53m.

Ernie was the first person back from the first leg, so I got to spend several seconds finding the Start triangle and showing everyone else the way to the first control. I had a pretty good run with my only significant error misreading the description for #8 (I read the "south outside corner" but didn't note that it referred to a paved area rather than the wall (mapped as cliff) surrounding the paved area - so the flag was actually inside the wall). Probably lost about a minute there. Managed to hold our lead and handed off to Angelica, but by then a couple of 3-point teams had made up all but about a minute of the stagger. So Joe Barrett and then Greg Ahlswede started shortly after Angelica. Our team ended up finishing third overall but unfortunately Angelica missed the middle of three controls in a row, so we were out of the scoring. Still had a lot of fun.

A bit of exploring at South Mountain in Emmaus (although I was mostly in Allentown and a little bit in Salisbury Twp.). Parked at the end of 28th Street near the water towers and headed north to find the tunnel under I-78. The tunnel is a 6' x 6' drainage culvert 200-300 feet long. There was water flowing through it but only about 1/2" deep, so my feet didn't get too wet except from splashing. Explored trails on the other side for a bit then headed back. Some interesting terrain on both sides of the interstate with several remnants of mining and/or quarrying in the area. 40F, sunny and breezy.
