Walking along the Seaton Cliffs near Arbroath, on the east coast of Scotland along the North Sea. There is a paved path along the top of red sandstone cliffs with several interesting erosion features. Lots of birds (mostly gulls) including some still in the later stages of the nesting process. Overcast and about 65F - no rain until after we were done hiking.

Scottish 6-Day, Day 6 ay Grandtully. M65L, Course 28. 2.8k, 80m. Forested terrain on a broad hillside. Undergrowth was primarily grass ranging from a few inches to a few feet. Lots of indistinct marsh mapped, which was occasionally useful. Quite different than the areas of the last few days. Course was set as a Middle distance, so mostly short legs using the compass and reading the subtle terrain features.

An OK run. Left the first control 90 degrees off but caught myself pretty quickly and doubled back to be sure I got on the right line to 2. Still off a bit and had to correct at the end - total time loss almost a minute. Lost about 30 seconds on 4 by following the contour rather than the bearing to the control. Pretty good for the rest of the run, which was mostly downhill from control 5 to the finish. 17th overall in M65L out of 62, 6:24 behind the winner.

Ended up 14th overall for the 6-Day in M65L. Scoring is based on place in the class for each day, with the top 4 scores counting. My places were 41, 19, 11, 12, 11 and 17. A top 10 would’ve been nice, but I’m reasonably satisfied with my results. Pretty tired after seven straight days of orienteering (sprinted on the “rest day” for another 11th place) with some long and arduous walks to starts and arenas. Improved my orienteering through the week and managed to stay focused on the navigation after a rough first day.

Scottish 6-Day, Day 5 at Craig a Barns. M65L, Course 28. 5.6k, 250m. Forested area with lots of contour detail. Lots of stuff on the ground (heather, some bracken, downed trees, some logging slash) which made for slow going and a pretty physical course. Crags and steepness too. Nice course with some good route choices.

This was tough terrain, having to constantly keep map and terrain contact while negotiating the microroutes. A bit tentative to the first two controls, getting used to the map and figuring out how to deal with the stuff underfoot. Lost a minute on 4 getting down a cliff without damaging myself. Completely blew the route choice on the 6-7 leg, seeing the trail run around to the right but opting for a straighter route that involved a steep side hill and generally slower going. Then lost some more time at the control when I didn’t see the bag and circled around. Total loss was about 5 minutes. OK for the rest of the race until the last few controls. These were short legs in an open area above the arena. Dropped 30 or 40 seconds on two of the controls being distracted by other people, herd paths and other flags (my brain just wanted to be done, so it took a break). Probably could’ve been about 7 minutes faster.

I didn’t think that I had done very well so was somewhat surprised that I finished 11th in M65L (out of 65), so I guess others were equally challenged.

Another nice day weather wise, low 70s, partly cloudy while running but then sun after we finished.

Parking to Arena (~640m), then to Start ~2km). Of the 150m of climb on the route, 130m was in the last 700m. Legs were trashed before I started.

Scottish 6 Day, Day 4 at Culteuchar and Dron. M65L, Course 28. 6.3k, 270m. Mostly open grazed moorland, so very fast (especially with herdpaths well established by the time I ran). Lots of climb on the course, including a somewhat gratuitous 30m on the penultimate control.

A very good run, with only one mistake on 13 when I climbed too high and overshot the control. Lost about a minute. 12th in M65 out of 67, 7:48 behind the winner. A minute faster would’ve put me in 8th.

And a bonus for the day was that instead of the forecast showers turning to rain we had sun and temps rising to the mid-70s.

“Rest Day” sprint at MacRosty Park in Crieff. Course 4 (M65/70 and W55/60). 2.6k, measured as shortest possible distance. A city park with most of the running on mowed grass or paths and many of the legs straight shots between features. A couple of route choice legs and one trap with the control on the opposite side of an uncrossable fence (in my opinion, not the best course setting since there were no route options, the control forced a 60 meter out-and-back run on pavement and the control placement tempted a reach-through to punch it (especially with an SI Air card)).

I was pretty clean except for one control and I think got the route choice legs correct. On control 15 I turned down a path (actually a road) too early and had to backtrack to correct. That cost about a minute, so a pretty huge error. Eleventh overall on the course (out of 70), 1:58 behind the winner. I did not have an SI Air card, which I think would’ve saved at least 1 or 2 seconds per control. We ran fairly early in the start window, before any rain, which started a couple of hours later.

Scottish 6-Day, Day 3 at Dundurn. M65L, Course 28. 2.6k, 135m. A Middle distance course in technical terrain with complex contour detail, lots of marshes and lots of rock (mostly crags/cliffs). 1:7500 map.

This course was a whole lot of fun. Constant map contact required but lots of detail to focus on. Lost about 40 seconds on each of 3 controls. Was offline on two of them but corrected by reading the terrain. On #9 I missed the route going around a cliff and ended up with a steep descent which cost time. Eleventh overall (out of 67), so pretty happy with the result. Missed top 10 by 13 seconds, 8:13 behind the winner.

Scottish 6-Day, Day 2 at Edinchip. M65L, Course 28. 5.3k, 125m. Five controls in open moorland to start, then a mix of woods and open with some complex contour detail.

A much better run than yesterday, but still about six minutes of errors distributed among 3 legs. Overshot a crossing point on the way to 6 and ended up with a longer, slower route. Misread things on a very short leg to 9 (or just didn’t see the bag when I saw the feature and wandered about for a couple of minutes. Didn’t execute my plan for 12-13 well and ended up spending more time in the woods than on a trail and then had to swing out around to the right to avoid an uncrossable stream. It turns out that the organizers later decided to subtract the time people took on this leg because although the map had a purple line to indicate uncrossable, it was not marked in the terrain and many people crossed the stream (which looked quite crossable in the terrain). So, my error on this leg got tossed. Was 19th of 66 after the adjustment, moving up from 24th.

Scottish 6-Day, Day 1 at Auchingarrich. M65L (Course 28), 4.8k, 160m. A bit rusty navigationally. Sub-optimal route choice to the first control and then turned the wrong way from my (weak) attack point. Struggled to understand the vegetation mapping which cost me about ten minutes on the third control (also was over compensating for the 1:7500 scale so pulled up way short). Settled down after that and enjoyed the second part of the course which was mostly shorter legs in a more technical area (varying vegetation, some contour detail and many (very useful) ditches). A couple of smaller errors in this section. Total of about 20 minutes lost. Pretty far down the results list.
