| Sierra del Oro, afternoon
From Boris' log:
After a drive involving several U-turns and several moments when it seemed we would never find the map, we finally got to Sierra del Oro, twenty minutes behind one of our cars, twenty minutes ahead of the next one, and an hour or so ahead of the girls' car! But it was worth it!!! The terrain was incredible, with lots of route choice legs and huge mazes of canyons and steep reentrants and beautiful hillsides. Very tough, physical terrain - "a manly course", as Tomas put it. We did part (about two-thirds) of last year's Costa Calida classic course, including an awesome 2.8km leg with myriad route choices. I was pretty pleased to be just a minute slower than Micke on that leg. After the long leg, Neil and I ran together, both pretty tired, but navigating well and pushing each other. It was lots of fun and excellent training, by the end of which I was totally exhausted. A fantastic final full day of camp!!!! |

More great orienteering terrain, fun course. Took the scenic route after splitting up with boris a third of the way through, abbsolutely amazing runnning along the ridge...

| Training run with Boris in Cotos Cuadros (or some such)
Beautiful views from the ridge on the way to 8. From Boris' log:
Long dstance route choice exercise with Neil. In the beginning, we kept picking different route choices and waiting for each other at controls, but after a while, ended up just running together. Nice terrain, ridge-and-valley, but not too steep, with fast woods but rock underfoot. Beautiful views in all directions from ridgetops on a gorgeous day!!
Hanging out with no shirts on and sunbathing afterwards - in February!!!! |

Sprint qualifier... had the misfortune to be in a heat with two talented male swedes and and a girl on the swedish team... despite inferior fitness (or willpower?) managed to be in sight after 13 controls out of 14 thanks to a couple of mistakes by the leaders. then made a mistake myself, so finished well off the pace.

| To and from the map. As it was I wasn't overly enthused about going training again after the previous days' exertions. But we had fun. Honestly. Makes for a story, although not as interesting as if Boris HAD actually swam the canal (or both canals as it turned out later)... from took twice as long as to...
from boris' log:
Getting to and from the Guardamar Sur map. I thought that getting there was an adventure, as we had to cross a canal by climbing up a highway overpass and then make our way through the town's dirty industrial part and busy center to find the map, but it was the way back that was the most memorable. We tried to run along the beach to get back, but hit a marina, with no way to get across the water. Afer more wandering and some fence-jumping, we eventually found ourselves less than 100 meters from our campsite, separated from it by two canals. After seriously considering swimming and (not as seriously) building a raft out of wooden crates, we cursed and ended up running all the way around, up the highway on-ramp, across the bridge, and down on the other side, adding an extra 4km or so to the run...

Cost Calida Day 2
Chasing start
Managed to catch some swede by the second or third control, all went fine until the fifth when I didn't realise that I was VERY obviously three contours higher than I should be and so missed my open area... lost a couple (three at least?) minutes on this control. Apart from that was pretty clean. Could have saved another minute on routes... fun competition. Congrats to GG for breaking into the big time and posting the days fastest time (30:XX), and to Tommi for winning overall and Mats in second...
gg looks like he's going to be a top top orienteer in the not too distant future... |

Costa Calida Day 1
WRE 892 pts
Really fun, tough, demanding race. Needed to use a lot of different skills, controls on vague slopes, controls in fields of stony knolls, route choices around and over hills and spurs and more.
Caught by gg by the sixth (aware of him at the 7th), caught him again at the 8th, with him to tenth when Mats T joined the fray. Went left with MAts on the worse route to 11, he got away a little, caught him again and gg who went tright to 11 at the 12th, caught them again at the 14th after taking a better line countouring into the control...
then they got away. knew gg went around to 16... i tried over and failed miserably. lost 4+ minutes of which two were route choice. then very tired..
then comes the funny bit... spiked 17 and going to 18 i saw a fit scandi leaving the control. hadn't a hope of catching him. another overtook me on the long trail around for 19-> 20... got him on the control... getting away from him in the terrain until a mistake at the 22nd... then came 24, a longish downhill then uphill leg in terrain... after crossing the last trail and heading diagonally towards the control i saw fit scandi again. decided he mustn't be very good but i still let him drag me left along th eslope. he well overshot, so i stopped, looked at the map, decided it must be behind me, turned around and jogged gently past three confused scandis directly to the control, navigating by an indistinct veg change... checked the map, punched and sprinted... hit the final three controls sans probleme and finished a couple of minutes ahead of fit scandi who turns out to be an orienteering legend having an off day (and who still managed to beat me by 10 minutes).
Hats off to Jon Duncan who won the race witha minute to spare in 1:31 ish?? |

| Fuente el Alamo
from Boris:
Morning training at Fuente el Alamo - old middle distance course from a previous Costa Calida meet. Lots of open terrain with big cliffs and tons of small route choice decisions that reminded me a bit of what San Diego must have been like - hard to find the right passages between cliffs and easy to end up standing right above the control, with no obvious way to get down to it. Fun!!
----------------
I messed up the second control badly and got there just after Lina restarted her race... Nearly caught her three times... and each time made a small mistake (or a big one the last time)...
not good at racing under pressure (when tired)??
lovely lovely place with nice quarry details

| Thought map wasn't superb, not as good as the Aveyron chaps at mapping vegetation... fun all the same
from Boris:
Afternoon training. With the Costa Calida meet the day after, we took this training very easy. I ran with Neil, and we jogged around a few short loops, talking about route choices and taking different approaches to controls. Not the most interesting terrain, with vegetation being the most challenging thing to read on the map.

made a 20odd minnute mistake on the third control, relocated in desperation at the ninth :) apart from that didn't have too much trouble. Mats Troeng fastest in 20:XX. Celine Dion did around 30 which is what I'd have had without my mistkae.
Not too upsetting given how little night-O I have done in the past.

Started second last with Tero on my heels. got caught at the second. Was with him until just before the third in the green. both hesitated, thought I knew where i was so went for the control but it wasn't there. tg was long gone. lost five minutes. sometimes i'm really stupid. i think i deliberately don't follow and deliberately make mistakes in order not to follow... stupid stupid stupid.
made another couple of mistakes to finish way down the pack.

This time went better, overtook a few people... just barely. Only made one major mistake, but lots of small hesitations and wobbles in the technical area. As Annabel said, we weren't really in control - technically not good enough yet...
Wasn't happy with my race but the result was comparatively much better. TG won in 30 or 32 i think.

Every ti;e I come here it is either freezing cold or roasting hot. Plants don't like it either... not much grows apart from rocks and crags.
French squad weekend, complete with Petter.
A little different from usual weeekends. Saturday's race was long. TG won in 1:32, Nico five minutes behind. It was a mass start with three initial loops in different orders followed by a looonng loop. I must have been almost last after the first three loops having made an absolute haims of the first control and making a few otehr mistakes. Then on the long I messed up the first control again having started running off-bearing. ACtually I got overtaken here by Amelie and Charlotte I think. caguht them up five controls later and didn't really get awy until there course forked to the finish and I had anotehr 40 minutes to go...
Persvered :)
At the two hour mark I was pretty much wasted.
Absolutely fantabulous terrain. I was running beyond my technical ability at times which doesn't say much for my technical ability. I need more O-training...
not sure was it exactly 40 controls? [checked - 42, with one central control three times] |

| Isle d'Adam - this time of year the brambles have been repeatedly frozen and trampled to death so the forest was way more runnable than usual.
Made one 30 second mistake and several of 10-15 seconds for under two minutes lost total. Pretty good race even if not going at full pace.
Only worry was I had pain under my left heel - it seemed linear like it might be a tendon and came after twisting the ball of my foot clockwise... did this a couple of times. I was using Asics insoles cos i forgot to pack the sorbothane ones... doh.
Is this the beginning of a comeback??????
