Gailiske
Quite green, one large (nay, enormous timewise) error at the tenth. Had to navigate into a large area of waist high vegetation with not too specific contour detail... almost got it right!! almost isn't worth much...
winner ran 56.18
aoart from that not orienteering particularly well.
very green area... nettles everywhere... mapped in spring before all the crap grew up :) |

| WUOC Relay
mixed team, 4th leg, after Daniel (ger), simon (aus) and niall...
got overtaken by the danish guy after a bad error on the way to the 3rd control... on my own until almost the tenth when i nearly caught the dane again... but another mistake... also a mistake going to the 7th, similar to the first error - using contours to choose the direction and going twenty degrees off - it wasn´t very steep...
not a bad run though, two minutes faster than niall, three slower than simon... |

| WUOC Middle
still no energy in the legs... first 7 controls were not good. After that was pretty clean. ran against a swede for a couple of controls... not fit enough so he got away. caught up again a couple of times which i was happy with... but...
i think (hope) a large part of my problems this week were due to the hard two weeks before coming here with the Nationales in Chamrousse and very little sleep. Still, it shouldn't take that long to recover. Perhaps I just didn't warm up well wnough.
I have a lot of work to do. Aside from technique and fitness, I should perhaps also do some running racing to learn to push myself and follow fit scandinavians who can read a map. It's not why I orienteer, but in big competions... but won't start doing that until next year :)

| WUOC Sprint.
Going great until the 15th control. Atacked the 16th from the wrong side... and ran into a bramble patch too... and didn't correct fast... lost a minute and got caught by the swede who starteda minute after.
then didn't go to the 19th control - punched a girls' one instead... strangely the map didn;t make sense starting from there going towards the 20th
winner ran just sub 15, without the mistakes 16:30 was easyish. |

strangely, i must have been over-compensating - everything came at me faster than expected and I lost 3 minutes on the 2nd control. grr.
didn't get a whole lot better afterwards... not as fit as i was a couple of weeks before. didn't stay with the guys that passed me. several big mistakes... SLOW through the green... showed a little potential occasionally, but
not at all happy.

will write more eventually... i hope... gueorgiou overtook me already at the 6th and ran 1h48...
did a few controls of the descent with DRenard. incredible stuff. died at the only drinks control - took a bit of gel and not enough water... felt sick and really dehydrated afterwards... took 40 minutes to do a 32 minutes loop... aagghhhh...
good stuff though. 2h30 was the realistic goal. could have done ten minutes faster though :( |

| Nationale, Chamrousse, "moyenne" distance.
ThierryG 42 minutes.
Cable car up to the start. Fog. FOG. FOOOGGGGG, for the first 6 controls... then we descended a bit to escape from it. great stuff. rough enough underfoot to slow everybody down. altitude slowed me down. way more climb than advertised (250+ v 100)....
... one pointless mistake at the 11th control. lost 3 minutes grenouillant in a tiny area which contained the control. not wonderfully mapped, but well enough for me not to have any excuses... grrr... still, 19th ain't too bad... |

| trophee de la ville nouvelle part II
a wee bit better than last week with som emore tradiitonal orienteering with undergrowth...
really warm and humid... every time i slowed down the sweat poured off and was drownded by my return... ran well for the most part. lost the plot at one point (going to control 24) but recovered fast enough - 30 seconds down on fastest split. apart from that, had 13 fastest splits and won with 4 minutes to spare, lqurent laine providing the only competition. he gained a minute on me over controls 8-11, so i could have done better.
still, kind of makes up for last week!!!
best orienteer in the world start after me on sunday... do i follow do i ignore... hmmm....

| Orsay, very slightly shorter version of yesterday's loop, probably moving a bit slower too...
carried around the Stonah map, didn't read very much of it.
having difficulty with body temperature... it's not ridiculously warm out at night, i have the window open and start out trying to sleep without even a sheet. end up with sheet... then wake up cold later on... guhhh...
so i went to bed before 11, sleep well after midnight and got up this mornign at 7. |
Monday Jun 7 |
 | forest run 1:20:20 [2] | |

| Orsay... pretty much the usual loop, a bit lopped at the start and added on in the middle...
beautiful, before lunch.
half-intended running yesterday, but work took over... and my legs are getting a little rickety and i'm permanently dehydrated too, so the rest might do me some good. loads of maths to do in the next while. |

| Orsay, morning. started out pretty slow, up the plateau and off to the west. had to take a dump at the 32 minute mark, got to the halfway point by about 44 mins and had to run back fast fast to make it back in tme for lectures...
... enjoyable. tired now, and top of the shin bones are a bit tender again. need to catch up on sleep. |

| Garennes, Guyancourt
aaaghhhh, fastest time when leaving the venue was 40:37. Guyancourt guy on home terrain. Could easily have beaten him if I hadn't spent five minutes off the map running around some big buildings. Don't know what the hell I was doing. The warning bell didn't sound loud enough, or I deliberately ignored it, or something.
Nice corner to the map where I ran off, buildings and passages and stuff, great park-o material. map was 1:5000, btw.
apart from that, ran pretty damn well; stopped at the controls a few times without any real reason... apart from that ran well around a not "terrible" map.
have to go next week now to get revenge.
PS evening run. finished around 8:45, back home at 11pm, shower shortly after twelve and straight to bed. Up again at 7:10am to go runnign in Orsay. |
Tuesday Jun 1 |
 | forest run 56:46 [4] | |
| |
| Orsay, hills, rain
up to the plateau, west and down the road, back up again, then started doing loops -
2 minutes up, 2 minutes 20 across down and across... going reasonably hard... it poured down for a while... and the path almost flooded...
about 4/5 of them?
good session... feel it a bit in the bones after, shouldn't do it 2 days de suite |
