Saturday Apr 30

orienteering race 24:14 [5] ***
Sprint Race, nearly ran it "perfectly". A couple of hesitations during the race, notably a wobble descending to 10, a couple of seconds extra reading the map up to (?) 16, but that was all, until the second last control just above and beyond the finish chute. Hesitated, stopped, read the map. Lost 15 to 25 seconds. Fatal. Also didn't run the last control&runin fast enough. Beaten into fourth place by NiallBourke. AndrewQ kicked ass winning in 22odd, not that far ahead of Jussi MTBO Makila
running warm up/down 25 [2]
to and from sprint champs, plus a bit of extra warmup.

Friday Apr 29

orienteering 24:53 [2]
Inishbofin,
Training area (mostly to and from hostel to tineresting bit). NNight was falling, and indeed did fall. Post-sunset was beautiful but curtailed the orienteering.

Wednesday Apr 27

running 45:10 [3] *
montsouris/Crohane Mtn map (shamrock)

not too exciting, map-reading was easy (after the weekend)

Sunday Apr 24

orienteering race 2:38:08 [3] ***** 12.5 km (12:39 / km) +305m 11:17 / km
Mazayes
Auvergne
Right near Puy de Dôme, and not far from the WC2006 terrain. Going to be interesting!!!

Got three out of the first 11 controls reasonably well. Technical stuff. Green and complicated. Really complicated. And I didn't do it well! 40 minutes behind the winner and it's not even a "teamer". It was like Volvic terrain the day before but more technical. Take almost the most complicated slovenian terrain and throw in branches and fallen trees and shit. I love this place. I think I have to come back. Definitely before the World Cup races!!! People are gonna get a shock unless they come out beforehand.

By the way, JM had a map of Aydar(t?), or at least a scan. The French wanted to use it for WC06 but the IOF commission got lost and said it was too difficult. And it is too tough for normal French events. Apparently it's only fit for french team training and selection races :) And even the suitable terrain, apparently similar to today's stuff, will be near illegible at 1:15. Will have to get a loupe.

Rained again for most of the race. Sore throat is getting worse - by Tuesday (now) it is quite bad, don't feel sick otherwise, purely throat and nose.

Foot isn't getting any worse.
trail run warm up/down 8:00 [2]
warm up warm down...

Saturday Apr 23

orienteering 50:00 [3] ****
Volvic, yep started from near the old water factory.

Spep's Mens Short course from the interregionale the year before. Technical stuff, lava flow i think, lots of stony ground, small depressions and hills and green wet vegetation lowering visibilty and making it difficult to keep a direction.

Made it around the course without any serious mistakes, would have been a minute or three faster with control flags. Must come back training here again.

Rained for 45 out of 50 minutes, dry before and after thankfully! Met Céline Dion before the start. Nearly missed the lift down from Paris with spep&valérie :(

Really good meal that night in crêperie/grill (1513) in Clermont
C • Céline Dion? 2

Thursday Apr 21

trail run 1:19:55 [3]
orsay

Wednesday Apr 20

trail run 44:00 [3]
Orsay,

short run on the flatter parts of the trails. foot is worse. tomorrow will make it three days in a row and four in five and time for a rest on friday!!

having trouble organising lifts for this weekend's race...

trying to strengthen tendons in feet... toe-crawl exercises and whatnot. can't do too much because they aren't feeling very strong. Is there a link? Am I paranoid?

Tuesday Apr 19

trail run 1:16:08 [3]
Orsay, long loop. kept the pace up. (Timed) Stop to admire the bluebells!!!

Sunday Apr 17

orienteering race 44:00 [4] 7 km (6:17 / km)
Gorges d'Aprémont
Regional Club Relay champs

How wonderful it is to be out orienteering again. Even if the foot isn't in the best of shape. Fine day, lots of sunshine. Went out with friends from the fac to introduce them to orienteering - they're going to run the raidIGN and need to learn what a map is. After the relay finished we went on a mapwalk in the interesting and badly mapped area.

I ran third leg, leader's were way ahead, overtook one or two people I think. Made one big 2 minute mistake on a bingoish control. Other than that, found running very hard, no speed in the legs, had to work to keep running at a steady pace. Foot didn' get in the way too much.

Can I get backin shape in two weeks?????????? Help!

Friday Apr 15

other 40 [3]
exercise bike. some of the time I had air from the rowing machine. sweated profusely otherwise. dehydration.

stretching/toning session Saturday.

Thursday Apr 14

Note
foot not doing so well... definitely not running today. might go for a jog between now and the "race" sunday...

dumdeedum

Wednesday Apr 13

trail run 41:19 [2]
orsay, not exactly gentle, but "short" and not too much climb. feeling very rickety this evening. foot is badsame as usual. grr

Tuesday Apr 12

trail run 1:20:05 [3]
Orsay, long run.

tried taking it gentle, but upped the cadence at times. foot didn't give any real trouble, but isn't getting any better. wish i knew what the risk was...

it's so great to be out running though. woods have changed a lot - instead of snow now there are vivid carpets of bluebells, smells nice!! the mud/snow baths are now rock hard cement.
Note
went for an xray in the morning. got it. _i_ can't see anything.

phoned to make appt with doctor - as he only works two days a month at the hospital it's for may 9th. what to do.... see if i survive the weekend

Monday Apr 11

Note
visite medicale

doctor twisted and pulled and wrangled the foot, said yeah, there's a problem with the head of the fourth metatarsal, might be a fracture, go get and xray.

thanks.

of course the examination made it hurt a little bit more, not too much though.

Sunday Apr 10

running 45:00 [3]
Montsouris, Rydbo map

4 laps, one sub 10. legs are sore, muscles having forgotten what running is all about. and the foot? don't know that it is any worse.

Friday Apr 8

running 48:30 [3] *
Parc Montsouris 4 laps Stonah

Foot doesn't seem to be getting better without running, want to see whether it will disimprove with running. If I don't get back training properly asap i won't be competitive. And I have a doctor's appointment for Monday in any case.

As ever there is no acute pain, just something resembling bruising (but no swelling, no discoloration, just a prominent tender bone and a bit of stiffness).
Will see how it is in the morning.

The run was nice, I'm unsurprisingly out of shape and surprisingly tight. Stretched the legs running fast a couple of times. Looking forward to orienteering.

Thursday Apr 7

other 50 [3]
exercise bike at orsay. sweat so damn much. rehydrating is tough.

also did 40 minutes on Tuesday, and today made a (negligible) dent into surveying la fac.

Monday Apr 4

stretching 1:00 [3]
guh.

good stretching/toning session today and yesterday (about an hour each). day before that was twenty minutes toning. then two days off, and another day's good session. booooring.

oh, also have been doing quite a bit of mental training the last couple of days. well, ummm, i mean CF!!
