running 10:00 [3]

Pottering about FDR SP after work. Amazing how much tarmac they spilt on roads and carparks.

My car tyres no longer hum at me after getting a cracked spindle and some other stuff replaced, all for the price of a pigg röd Volvo.

Note

*** JWOC Athletes Lighter than Air ***

A stomach bug has struck numerous athletes at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Rumia, Poland. Having lost 3-5kg each, some girls involved now have negative weight. Unaware of the irony, the Swedish coach said, "We must think positive", but the athletes are having trouble remaining in contact with the ground. Sources say fatter competitors are praying for significant headwind.

aerobic (bike/other) 10 [3]

Pretending to be a little frog and laughing heartily. Happy, Marie?

Thursday Jun 23, 2011 #

stretching 10 [3]

haven't done enough of this lately

Tuesday Jun 21, 2011 #

Note

Got out of bed to watch the sprint. Hohum. And it wasn't a bad area either.

Monday Jun 20, 2011 #

Note

tired

someone had duckling for dinner

Saturday Jun 18, 2011 #

Note

HR doesn't want to drop below 70. If only screaming would help.

11 AM

running 11:14 intensity: (40 @1) + (10:02 @2) + (32 @3) 1.23 km (9:10 / km)
ahr:137 max:159 rhr:70

rhr was higher than I would like, perhaps cos I didn't go to bed until after 11 last night, so I didn't "run" for as long as I had been hoping to.

Note

Just entered H21 at Oringen. Transport to the races plus five days of O (or two days of O and a week of sleep?) for 1725 SEK.

Yup, 272 US Dollars... good thing I have a job. Alternatively, that would have covered entry to 45 WCOC meets (non-member rate).

In fairness, it was only 1695 SEK. The extra 30 SEK was a fee I was charged by Oringen for paying by Swedish bankgiro from my Swedish bank account because I live abroad. Not impressed.

strength 10 [3]

Monday Jun 13, 2011 #

Note

I guess tomorrow I have to decide to be healthy in time to stumble (21 short?) Oringen... entry deadline being the 15th... zzzzzzz

Note

"He got around this difficulty by offering machetes to people who would talk to him: they squared their consciences by accepting the gifts but giving him false names for their fellow villagers. It took him five months to discover that the secret names for the chief’s family that he had so carefully collected actually translated as "long dick", "hairy cunt" and their daughter "fart breath"."

Silly anthropologists.

orienteering 30:00 [3]

Verrrrry slow jogging around the Rye Hilton on a Slutsky/OrienteeringUnlimited creation, 1:2500, with a lot of detail, not all of it correct.

Across the road from the Hilton is 800 Westchester Ave, another stunning creation of Mitchelstown man Kevin Roche.

Note

Two days ago I was doing laundry downstairs and one of the machines was broken, so I went back up to get more powder and quarters. Going back down in the lift, by way of explanation for just having a scoop of powder, I said to the woman who entered one of the machines was broken. Paraphrasing her, "I hate when that happens. Last week one of the dryers was broken. People should put up a notice when the machine is broken." I show her my note saying "Broken", all ready to post. "Did you?", I ask. Eyes drop, voice changes, a sheepish "no" emerges.

Stereotypical, unfortunately.

running 9:00 [3]
ahr:130

gonna hit 36 today

Note

In this heat, I really notice my MBP warming up. I decided to check the Energy Saver panel to see which GPU it was using - dynamic switching, apparently, and I could force it to be in high performance (= hot) mode, or let it switch between the two, but not choose the integrated, cooler chip. Boo to that.

So I went here for help: http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus

Incidentally, under dynamic switching, opening Firefox it switches straight away to discrete/hot, while Safari on the same page stays with the integrated chip. Weird.

Note

Went to meet someone in Purchase this evening, surprised to see there was an orienteering event on... according to the sign at the entrance... oops.

Getting darker and windier outside...

Tuesday Jun 7, 2011 #

Note
rhr:47

fairly wrecked again today, rhr isn't high though, not after an extra couple of hours in bed this afternoon anyhow, first time checking in a while.

Monday Jun 6, 2011 #

Note
slept:9.5

/10.5 [8.50-7.20]
Probably still need more.

Note

Went back to bed for half an hour, then made the mistake of going to the bed-free office. Oops.

Note

But there is a lawn outside. 45 minutes there helped a little.

Just realised I missed a conference in Stony Brook last week and at the Clay Institute three weeks ago. Wouldn't have been in a fit state to attend much of either, but still a bit stupid. I knew about the SB one and had heard rumours of the other.

Plus 2.5 hrs in bed after lunch. Back to the good ol' days.

Sunday Jun 5, 2011 #

Note

In one dream last night, a two-headed moose was on the rampage at Oringen, leading to several mashed competitors. I blame Jordan's dog.

Went to bed at 8, got up at 5... played a bit with sprint base maps today.

Note

Listening to This American Life about a doctor and some nurses in Winkler Memorial Hospital, TX. Incredible story. Poor country.

Saturday Jun 4, 2011 #

Note

Body not cooperating.

Friday Jun 3, 2011 #

Note

zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Note

Honestly?
"White Controls should be hung chest high. Yellow controls should be hung waist high.
Orange
Orange controls should be hung just above the knee.
Brown, Green, Red and Blue
For all of these courses, the control feature should be seen first and then the control. Bags should be hung just below the knee. "

"4.1.2 The following USOF Standard Course Class structure is the minimum which a sanctioned "A" meet must offer, except as amended for Elite Meets. Competition formats other than individual foot orienteering competition may use different class structures as detailed in their respective sections. One non-competitive class is required, Map Hike, on the White course."

Note

Ate normal (Neil) sized breakfast and lunch yesterday, then a pear and a snickerdoodle for dinner... too much food for one day, apparently. Maybe I should do some exercise so I can eat more.

Note

Today's intake: Porridge, one bowl; raisins, a few; bread, slice thereof; cheese, some; milk.
3 PM

running 1:01:53 intensity: (2:51 @1) + (43:53 @2) + (15:09 @3) 5.99 km (10:20 / km)
ahr:143 max:166 rhr:49
