bois d'aigrefoin.

Sunday Mar 26

orienteering race 1:02:18 [3] *** 9.3 km (6:42 / km)
23c
melun - boissises

flat area, couple of interesting details, lots of dead brambles and ferns... not an atrocious area at this time of year. Pretty tired after yesterday's runs. Didn't push hard, tried to be fairly steady... succeeded better in the second half, but still lost a little time.

Need to stretch properly this week
trail run warm up/down 5:00 [2]
muscles tight after yesterday. foot tendon gave out during the run too... not good

Saturday Mar 25

orienteering race 1:17:00 [2] *** 6 km (12:50 / km)
14c
grotte beatrix
nighto
small leds lamp
didn't have a whole lot of fun. rained all day so the ground was sodden and the rocks were slippy. lost ten minutes on 5th&6th controls. 5th i was almost at the ontrol but the hill was way rockier than i had pictured after looking behind a couple of blocks i went off to relocate for a while... 6th i was on the wrong spur.
Not any fun in those conditions with a frendl. can't run, can't plan, etc off trails... dangerous too...
orienteering (4834) 48:34 [4] **** 5.8 km (8:22 / km)
25c
grotte beatrix

ran off the map at the first control... mapper had gotten lazy towards the end so only one crag was mapped on a slop full of rocks and boulders... lost a minute and a bit. at the 12th I was only a minute and a hlaf down on the leader (stephaneT) but then my concentration went. several thirty second mistakes/sloppinesses later and I was 6 minutes down. Guh.
Not fit enough to run two races fast??

Some bits of the course were really nice
orienteering race 19:49 [5] *** 2.7 km (7:20 / km)
20c
grotte beatrix
Championnats regionaux de sprint

planning was a little shoddy for a sprint. pity they didn't make it a little more technical or have a little more accurate map.
Otherwise, not abd. beaten by almost three minutes. 5th overall... buf.
forest run warm up/down 10:00 [2]
warmups for runs

Friday Mar 24

orienteering 43:40 [2]
bois d'aigrefoin
1:4000 near st-remy
horrible, fely hungry, tired... don't think it will have done my o-techinque any good at all. still, good to go out for a slog in terrain once in a while.

will be motivated for the races tomorrow (and to a lesser extent sunday!) sprint middle night normal and it's not even a french squad weekend :)

trail run 43:40 [2]
to and from map. half of it roadside, half of that on mud/grass

Wednesday Mar 22

trail run warm up/down 12:00 [3]
Orsay XC race today, warmed up by doing a good few laps of the major hill on the course (only a short wee thing, but enough to give me an advantage!)
trail run race 21:10 [5] 5.45 km (3:53 / km) +60m 3:41 / km vdot: 51.8
XC
Cross de la faculté d'Orsay

First time ever to win a running race! Not overly exciting since I led from the beginning :) It had rained a fair bit so the course was a little muddy and slippy. My poor competitors were wearing road-running shoes, so from the start I had a few metres on them.

Was concerned about starting too fast, so got a bit worried when I was on my own, but on patches where footsteps could be heard people weren't far behind... and I felt ok... gave a few kicks on the downhills/muddy bits/hill just so as the others wouldn't think me tiring. One final acceleration coming to and running up the hill gave me a safe lead to coast into the finish with 10s to spare...

Nowhere near last year's time, set by some fast bastard, of just over 20 minutes (checked - 20:10 sunny,16 degrees!). Probably couldn't run that even in good conditions...

prize was Crédit Lyonnais Tshirt (ugg) plus PSUC shoe-bag (better!).

stomach hurts now... had warm water and some cake after the race before going to Cesfo for lunch... don't know what caused it. Also tired mentally... guh

not sure how much climb there was, probably a bit over 60m

Tuesday Mar 21

trail run 45:00 [2]
laundry, chateau de la mad, canal home

maybe 15 minutes (max) on road/paved.

Monday Mar 20

trail run 42:34 [2]
st-remy
took an Aydat map, only made it two controls and even then I made a mistake :(

Sunday Mar 19

bike 45 [3]
station compet station... shortcut on the way back
orienteering race 1:21:46 [4] *** 13 km (6:17 / km)
spiked:25/30c
Foret de Montmorency
Interregionale organised by AC Beauchamp

Nice day, nice people, nice race, nice result... orienteering was technically pretty straighforward after last weekend in auvergne. Thought I didn't make more than a minute of mistakes and a minute of hesitations in total when i finished. Looking at splits I could probably have gleaned about three minutes total. But I ran really really well...

Came second to Nico Girsch's 1:13:58

First time _racing_ against mortals this year in France - nice to see I'm at least as good as last year...

Thursday Mar 16

trail run hills 1:02:40 [3]
côtes d'orsay

was supposed to win the final stage of the Crifcou today but missed the bus. Skipped half a day of teacher training to try getting the bus... didn't even make it back to college in time for the seminar. Instead took a nice stroll on the plateau...

Orienteering would have been much better than trail-running. However, I'm more mtivated for Sunday now :)

Wednesday Mar 15

trail run 40:00 [3]
st remy, no depressions, one third off-trail

Tuesday Mar 14

trail run hills 40:47 [3]
côtes d'orsay *5

Monday Mar 13

running 25:00 [1]
Andrew was test-running the map in Orsay. Apparently ran the course in around 14 minutes... which is a bit faster than i had expected...
I was joggin around, taking photos, showing off interesting bits of map etc.

Shoulder stilll not great after the weekend. Fairly convinced I momentarily or partially dislocated it in the fall on Sautrday. Grr.
bike 40 [3]
upon arriving in college i damaged the chain, so didn't cycle home

Sunday Mar 12

orienteering race 40:59 [4] ***** 3.7 km (11:05 / km)
16c
Aydat
Middle Qualification

Is this the toughest orienteering in the world? I suppose it can't be, but I also suppose it's not far off. It is a little more runnable than Mazayes, with just as much detail. Unfortunately there was quite a bit of snow overnight. Only helped for a couple of controls (tracks).

Horsed up the third control and lost a bit of time on the ninth too. Then got overtaken by better orienteers than the ones who had overrtaken me at the third... actually managed to run a coupe of controls well between there and the finish. Well, no worse than some other people... finished ahead of the pack after navigating much better to the last control despite losing 30 seconds on it... think I chose better routes for the last few.Signs of promise amid the despair...

orienteering race 53:38 [4] ***** 4.6 km (11:40 / km)
22c
Aydat,
Middle Final
Thierry 40:14?

Not half as much fun. Too tired, too much snow, too many tracks, didn't read the map wonderfully well... used the tracks too much... terrain is still incredibly challenging
running warm up/down 15:00 [3]
warmups today and maybe a couple of minutes from la veille too... too cold to warm down afterwards :(

Saturday Mar 11

orienteering race 3:11:00 [4] ***** 14 km (13:39 / km)
32c
Mazayes,
French Squad weekend, Andrew was gatecrashing too!!
Up early (before 6) to get the train to Clermont. Lift (thanx) from Céline&Fabrice

Orienteering here isn't getting any easier!!! There was a light layer of snow on the ground and a bit on the trees. Temperature was slightly above freezing so ended up with a lot of cold slush on my body when running. Stupid mistake on the first lost me three minutes. Must learn to read te map to the first control in technical areas...

Other than that not a horrendously eventful race until later on. Was probably 50 minutes for each of the first two loops... on the third I was getting tired :) made a mistake on the light green slope control - didn't know where in the circle I was ... so i got colder and tireder. fell onto a path from a bank on the way to the next xontrol, luckily didn't do too much damage to my knee when knocking it off a rock. four very cool ultra-technical controls made me colder and tireder... going to this loop's seventh control i fell again. Shot out my arms to cushion the fall, but my left hand hit a wee tree stump, did some damage to the little finger base knuckle which I didn't notice at the time, because I think my left arm popped out or tried pretty damn hard to pop out of its shoulder socket. Was surprised when I got up that it seemed to be in one piece.

Continued on to the 7th... thought I was navigating in fine but when I get to where i thought the control should have been there was nothing. on a small hill in a big expanse of low visibility green forest... aagghhh... so i jogged off confused and frustrated and despairingly to try to relocate. In the general direction of some details and if that failed of a path. But then I found a detail on which I could conjecture where I was and verified off of a neighbouing wee green hill in no-visibility forest which had a rock on it. Navigated carefully to where the control should have been and found the same small hill as the first time. AAgghhh. There was a bit of prebalisage (tape) on the ground so I had confirmation... french squad boys were already out taking in the controls...

Made it back to the map change - didn't know there wasa fourth loop, this one short. I had switched off my mind running back and was frozen, so headin out again was really tough. This time there wre more tracks in the snow. Following them was uinsuccessful. Finally finsihded the course, last one back... put on a dry top and went back to the accommodation Thanks to Céline and Andrew for helping carry my things. Fire at the gîte put some warmth back in me, enough to recover a little sanity...

Shoulder wasn't in the best of shape. Was surprised that it was more the hand (slightly swollen now) rather than the shoulder that disrupted my sleep most.
