Monday Mar 31

Note
what a waste of life being sick.
I don't know what I actually had, started with a sore throat, may have become a chest infection... or maybe the flu, but distant diagnostics plumped for the former...

timing was bad - if I hadn't had to entertain guests from the beginning I might have been able to kill it early... unfortunately... so poor french friends followed by parents had to put up with me feeling sorry for myself and explore Warsaw indepentently.

Sunday Monday Tuesday I hadn't enough energy to read for more than 10 minutes without collapsing with tiredness... wicked sick.

Sunday Mar 30

Note
starting to feel better at last...
still not 100%, but spring is in the air, sunshine and double figures (positive!)...

Friday Mar 28

Note

let's hope the antibiotics kick in fast.

absolutely wasted. Played cards the last two nights w my parents and after two or three hands I was wrecked.

Thursday Mar 27

Thursday Mar 20

running 57:44 [2] 9.44 km (6:07 / km)
BRRRRRRRRRr
we want spring!!!!!!!!

bloody freezing again, despite headband, long sleeves (2 layers) and tracksuit leggings

got back, showered, changed, ate, went to the airport to collect ismael and delphine... felt like a sore throat was coming...

next day feel even more like a sore throat is coming! must fight it off... this was completely unnecessary, why can't the weather be nicer?

Wednesday Mar 19

running 1:13:55 [2] 12.6 km (5:52 / km)
ahr:135 max:162
bloody baltic again

one of those horrible runs that are just horrible :) back in Warsaw after a lovely weekend in the mountains. It was a bitterly cold, dark evening and I was tired and hungry... and towards the end I ran into an invisible rusty metal rod sticking up out of the ground.

Tuesday Mar 18

Note
after it being close to 10 degrees in Zakopane, we felt the spring was really here. This morning in Krakow wa also had warmish weeather and sunshine...

then came the long drive back to warsaw... just as I hnaded the wheel back to Magnus wame a snowstorm!!!! night fell too... made for great driving conditions. At least the road wasn't freezing.

When will this winter end?

Monday Mar 17

forest run 1:18:05 [2] 7.78 km (10:02 / km) +400m 7:59 / km
ahr:143 max:180 rhr:45
took a handful of dates before heading out for a pre-breakfast jog. went straight into a killer ascent. managed to keep jogging that bit... later on I had to walk a few bits in steep forest.

last morning in Zakopane. After a welcome breakfast and a little rest, headed to Krakow.

Celebrated StPatrick's day!!

Sunday Mar 16

trail run hills 1:17:35 [3] 5.86 km (13:14 / km) +970m 7:15 / km
ahr:160 max:187
up Kasprowy Wierch!
Started from the bottom of the cable car ride. Ran up to the changeover, trails had a bit of snow, compacted by skiers and walkers... that took thirty minutes. then considered what to do... the route to kasprowy W was possibly closd for the winter -the signpost had been removed... then met someone who came down from there on foot, so i figured it was ok to go up :)
running/walking in snow (some of it hard/wet), wwas looking forward to the downhill, but it got steep and a bit more interesting near the top and I was cold....
so had a herbata with lots of sugar and took the cable car down

views from on top were fantabulous, and i am starting to see why some people consider downhill skiing not to be a pointless activity :)

uphill route on GoogleEarth - hopefully this works...
trail run 30:15 [3] 3.22 km (9:24 / km) +360m 6:02 / km
ahr:160 max:173
since KW wasn't enough, and since I wanted to tr running downhill in snow... i went back up to the cable car changeover station...
trail run 13:12 [3] 3.09 km (4:16 / km)
ahr:165 max:177
and back down... great fun!!! 350m negative climb

Saturday Mar 15

Tuesday Mar 11

running 42:41 [2] 7.9 km (5:24 / km)
ahr:143 max:171 rhr:51
very happy to oversleep today... only barely made it in time for polish class after the shortened jog this morning... sunshine, 12 degrees, like ireland just after christmas!!
decided i could prove a new but not very interesting theorem in a café this afternoon...

Sunday Mar 9

forest run warm up/down 25:00 [1]
9 before, 16+ after
orienteering race 33:42 [4] **** 4.9 km (6:53 / km)
ahr:169 max:181 21c
This was fun!
Fort Twierdzy Modlin, north of Warsaw, fort that held out longest against the nazi invasion in 39, built successively by swedes, napoleon, etc....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modlin_Fortress

Lots of ups and down (for a change in Poland), reasonably technical, excellent sprint terrain...
course was supposedly 5km, but Garmin said I ran less...
C • Cool! 4
Note
got attacked by velcro plant out there... rash above my right hip where i had a dose of it...

Saturday Mar 8

orienteering 57:30 [4] *** 9.5 km (6:03 / km)
ahr:169 max:182 20c
Pogorzel, just past Otwock.

Lovely weather, nice runnableforest but not technical enough... most of it was point and run... wiht or without a compass...

made acouple of mistakes due to running too fast.
There were controls out there but it was untimed (which happily meant no ounchcard punching!!)...
Garmin distance: 10.75km
forest run warm up/down 5:00 [1]
warm down,
saw lots of butterflies bright yellow/green, very nice! Didn't notice any while orienteering...

Note
One of those days that make me wonder why I train and why I do maths... tired going to the gym and didn't enjoy it, not much more to be said about that.

But this morning, listened to a nice talk for an hour and a half... but half the talk was devoted to proving a lemma that i could prove in five minutes (and even prove something stronger). So I figured this would mean a nice easy paper which could interest a few people, because it seemed like the result wasn't known. However, it turns out it follows immediately from known proofs, and a co-author of the co-author (from Warsaw) of the speaker was one of the authors of the known proof, another mathematician from Warsaw another... so if the co-author hadjust asked around a bit then all this time wouldn't have been wasted. Then I looked up the paper with the known result and a couple of other papers citing and being cited by this paper... all with a common author... and this author (with over 120 articles) like scut-and-paste, so I was seeing the same things over and over again as my life was sapping away... aaaaaagggghhhh almost as much time wasted as is wasted by reading this post. Sometimes I wonder what the point is with all these polish mathematicians who won't talk to each other...

happily there's orienteering tomorrow

Wednesday Mar 5

trail run 1:37:32 [2] 15.38 km (6:20 / km)
ahr:141 max:166
Warsaw, river run north

forgotten how nice this was (for a run from city centre of a mjaor eurpean capital), would have been better with trail shoes as muddy in places
Note

Corridor orienteering, Legionowo (Przystanek2)

Normally get scaredby corridor orienteering, but the corridors were wide enough and the orienteering easy enough that it didn't makemuch difference... saved on ink!!

ahr:182 max:198
Falenica 10km bieg na gorskie
What counts for a hill run in Poland :)

There's a ridge, and you run up and down it many times... maybe 7 times per lap, three laps.

Last time I ran here I was less fit (endof Jan) and set out hard but died after 6km, AHR early on was 190+. This time I decided to play it safe, kept hr around 180 for three quarters of the race, then sped up a little towards the end. Seemed to work ok, but I wasn't aprticularly fast. Slavek ran 40.

For comparison, middle distance in portugal, ahr was 184.
Without particularly trying, I broke my so far recorded max hr, now 198 rather than 196... reckon i could break 200:)

good training, course is quite sandy in places so there's good cushioning on the downhills...

ps: lap times:1405, 1429, 1353 - last time, running harder, took almost 29 to run two laps.
orienteering 1:05:20 [2] 8.65 km (7:33 / km)
ahr:145 max:165
since i sgined up for the "10km" A course (scoreO) I had to do it. Nothing exciting. Soft forest. Went slow, tired towards the end!
