orienteering 58:50 [3] 6 km (9:48 / km)
DM middle distance Sorunda rerun

After a few days enjoying the autumn leaves and cheap vodka in Poland I drove back up to Gdansk to catch the boat yesterday. I left Warsaw with 5h40 before check-in closed and viaMichelin said I had 4h52 of driving ahead of me. No motorway, so plenty of overtaking practice on Polish roads and getting intimidated by oncoming lorries on my side of the road... Stopped twice, once for a pee early on, bad idea as all the lorries I had worked so hard to overtake were back ahead of me, but I hadn't much choice; then a second time for petrol and wisniowka, where I was told 3h left, and 3h30 before checkin closed... oooh the pressure.

All went fine until the entry into Gdansk just after 4pm, as rush-hour had started :( took 30mins to go the next half a km... didn't get to stop at a shop and stock up on *everything* as planned, instead went straight to the terminal and got there with 15 mins to spare.

Boat was uneventful. Arriving into Sweden by boat was as stunning as ever. The weather was beautiful today with clear, clear, blue skies and double-digit temperatures. I'd been planning on going straight back home and just going for a wee jog in Stockholm, but couldn't resist returning to Sorunda.

Parked the car and all my worldly belongings in the woods and ran around the middle distance DM course plus a little extra to and from it. As I had thought, there is something wrong with the map at the third control, big knoll/hill/spur missing and the cliff is too high up 50 m from the control.

Couple of other minor complaints about the mapping, but on the whole it is a wonderfully pleasant place to orienteer, even if the marshes were cold.

The car is emptied and the boxes unpacked... good thing I got a big apartment :)

Sunday Oct 19

orienteering race 50:00 [2] 6 km (8:20 / km)
Orienteering in Lodz.

Not in the best of shape as had been partying the two preceding nights in Torun, my left ham was a little sore from bowling and my right calf was sore out of contrariness.

Winner ran 31 showh how well I wsa going. It seemed like the north lines were 10 degrees off, but I might have been crosseyed from wisniowka

Wednesday Oct 15

trail run 51:15 [3] 8.55 km (6:00 / km) +370m 4:56 / km
ahr:143 max:191
only ran two thirds of what was planned due to my right calf being tight/sore. Dont really know what the cause is, was trying to massage it mysefl a bad idea, or irregular stretching or...?

still got a fair amount of climb in, running from kth two yellow and one green loop.

off to poland tomorrow

Monday Oct 13

trail run 1:20:00 [3]
Around the trails from KTH.

Put on my headlamp but left the garmin on the window sill. Doh, especially considering that most of the time the trails were lit. Apparently I did over 300m climb, which isn't too bad for Stockholm, I suppose.

Sunday Oct 12

Note
dreamt last night that some grey Swedish morning I was waiting for it to get bright enough so that I could go out training, but that by noon it was pitch black again and training was impossible.

Good thing I bought myself a fancy new petzl yesterday.

C • hello Neil 2
running 30:30 [2]
Surprised myself by going out for a run around Laangholmen.

I guess it was something to do with wanting to play with my new toy. Funny the headlamp cost two-thirds the price of my car.

Saturday Oct 11

orienteering race 42:11 [4]
25manna
5th leg, 3rd man
IFKL 3

Was worth gettin gout of bed for. I considered not, since I'd been sick all week and still not in the best of shape. But healthy enough to run at 80%... made a couple of wee mistakes, nothing too serious. It was pretty easy with maanga maanga stigar.

and we were the best 3rd team which merited a wee plaque for the club. Our last leg runner went out way after OKL and overtook them to take "1st" place by 30 seonds.

1st team came 5th. 2nd team came 63rd and 3rd 2nd team. pretty cool.

festen var mycket braa. and I got home 12 minutes after leaving it, whileOKL boys were searching for a taxi :)

Thursday Oct 9

Note
not healthy yet. Only left the apartment to give my SI card to Andrew at KTH to give to Emma at Hjorthagen to give to somebody else on Lidingo who will give ME the si card on saturday so I can run the relay. Apparently there is less chance of it not turning up this way. My poor baby.

Wednesday Oct 8

Note
Monday was a planned day off. Tuesday was unplanned as a cold was coming on. Today it is here. Hopefully tomorrow or the day after I'll be better.

Listening to Irish radio today... heard the Angelus at one o'clock. The gongs reminded me of yesterday at the local library - went there just before closing time to join and borrow a couple of books, a woman walked around fifteen minutes before it closed banging a gong. What a great job! And the difference between what a bell represents...

Read "The Moon is Down" by Steinbeck this morning. Short and sweet. Norwegian integrity standing up to German invaders. Up next, correcting proofs to an article to be published and then Eating Chinese Food Naked!

In other news, bought a pigg red volvo on Monday. It's not pretty but it moves :)

Sunday Oct 5

orienteering race 1:45:00 [3]
DNF

Turebergs long distance

Didn't go into this race in the right frame of mind. Don't know was it the lack of sleep or trying to run fast on Thursday and Saturday combined with a lack of fitness... or just not being psychologically capable of running a long distance properly (middles are easier, just go flat out!).

Wasn't orienteering smoothly at all. Bits were ok, but not going esp fast or well. Some of the forest was pretty stony underfoot. After going two thirds of the way around I decided the car might leave without me if I kept going so I should head back...
would have been good to finish just for the sake of hurting myself.

Another reason to get a car (along with not leaving the flat early enough so I ended up getting a taxi from tcentralen to kth, doh).

Went to AQ's in the evening for romantic leftovers. Nice!

Saturday Oct 4

running warm up/down 20:00 [1]
before and mostly after the race (which isn't getting written up today).
orienteering race 38:30 [4]
Osteraker junior relay spectator race, more or less, so it used a path-infested area. It wasn't un-fun, and I somehow managed to make three minutes of mistakes... stupid neil. right quad sore. Ass kicked by a handicapped ass.

Thursday Oct 2

trail run warm up/down 20:00 [3]
13 minutes before club training, 7 after. trails and forest.wearing o shoes
orienteering race 32:50 [4]
25manna training
from IFKL clubhouse.

first loop I did well, no major pbs, still in the hunt, possibly getting tired towards the end. In any case, picked up the second map which was 1:10 (first was 1:5) and took a while to get into it. Slow to the first, took a wrong path to the second, think I got the third but after a mistake, relocated carefully offroute to four... then no pbs to the finish.

Good fun

calves tight, especiallly the left one.

Wednesday Oct 1

running 39:45 [3] 6.9 km (5:46 / km)
ahr:139 max:167
First time running around Lill Jans Skogen from the office in KTH. It was raining but nice.

Left calf tight while running, both a little tight afterwards.

Headed down to the city hall afterwards for a buffet reception, just what the doctor ordered. Pretty building. Followed it up with a beer in Sjätte Tunnan.
