It is fantastic, but didn't arouse the usual ecstatic state, as I was mentally tired, fell asleep a third of the way through and staggered the rest of the course, plus halfway through I started worrying about my knee, possibly because I could slightly feel it (no pain, just awareness).

After hanging in the car for 15, it started to stiffen up a little, and felt it a little more again in the evening. Iced some. Not too bad, might be able to run again tomorrow, but next Saturday looks more and more stupid.

Skipped the second session.

In the morning I went to FDR, helped out a bit, put out a few SI units. Turnout was more quantity than quality.

Three scouts and two scout leaders came and paid 10$ to do two courses... maddening. I guess we needed to be clearer about rates.

contours are 2.5m, I suspect the scale is more something like this:

Note

Just spent another five hours applying for a job. I had to submit 10 different files for this one.

This is such a bloody waste of time. Why can't they just let us teach and research. And it's terrible. I got so pissed I just used my usual teaching statement instead of responding to this:
"The applicant should present their pedagogical visions (1-2 pages). The applicant’s fundamental approach to teaching should be evident, along with how this philosophy is expressed in the applicant’s own work. Applicants should relate not only what they have done but also how it was done, why it was done in a particular manner, and what the results were. Likewise shall the applicants describe what they have learned in pedagogic courses and how this knowledge has been applied in the teaching.
The presentation should include the following:

A description of the applicant’s own view of knowledge, learning, teaching, and leadership, and how he or she has developed and applied this view
Reflections on one’s own work in relation to the goals and conditions prevailing in the work environment
Plans for the future
The applicant is encouraged to comment on implemented pedagogical activities against the background of the submitted documents."

Agggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

trail run 29:00 [2]

Still screwed.

Sunday Mar 25, 2012 #

Note

Bernie took this one, somehow :)

Knee is messed up, so just took pics from the woods today.

Note

At some point it was decided that any confusing or incoherent remark merited The Joe.

I don't think I wrote this before, but the juniors are a wonderful bunch.

Various jogging, shadowing etc.

Didn't do the knee any favours.

Note

This is almost as bad as trying to connect to wireless at PSU. http://www.univ-paris-diderot.fr/DocumentsFCK/recr...
Still it's an improvement on postal applications.
This uni does a much better job: https://candidature-ec-2012.ujf-grenoble.fr/

orienteering 1:00:00 [2] 8.0 km (7:30 / km)

Picked up some streamers from a couple of weeks ago. They were in approximately the right place. Headlamp!

Central Park. Fun, except my legs are acting up. L knee is tender again. Rt quad isn't bad bad, but I could feel it, and the left calf tightened up a bit, I guess because of the other issues. And because there weren't very many of us, and someone had to watch the bags, and it wasn't spectacularly well-organised, it wasn't very efficient.

Decent lunch afterwards, then went down to watch a couple of hours of parade. There were lots of high school bands and lots of bagpipes. Fairly typically, the pipers had a pretty limited selection of tunes. 7/10 would be the Minstrel Boy, 2/10 A Nation Once Again. Oh how cultured.

A bunch of the county associations had big pennanty standardy gonfalon things - what are they called? - with images they are proud of - Waterford had Meagher, Kilkenny Rice, Offaly Clonmac, Antrim Bobby Sands et al).

The parade seemed to be more for the 150K marchers than for the people watching, unlike the Dublin one, say. No floats, no performing (apart from a bit of 'music' and baton girls), unless maybe the first few hours were more interesting...

The train into the city was full to overflowing, never saw that before.

I like the one of the Champ about to eat Russian skidmarks.

strength 1:00 [3]

Core strength class at climbing. May have overdone either the squats or the burpees. Vastus medialis is a wee bit strained, perhaps.

Apart from playing with medicine balls, didn't learn much.

I was in NC until Wednesday. Mathematics and sunshine. Fun times.

Did some of Day 2, hoping the knee would warm up and get less sore. Failed.
QR, for what it's worth. Annoyed I didn't stay closer to the line going to 8, or even a little right of. 5 was fairly terrible too, clearly not focussed on racing.

US Classic Champs Day 1
I've done worse, but no way I should be within five minutes of the lead... nor should I have led the race the first three controls. Too sloppy and too slow.

QR. I only calibrated the route with two points, at 18 and where I left the path between 6 and 11. In some places it's good, others there is distortion.

#1 I spiked, despite what QR says, but took a while to leave the start and work out a direction to run in. #2 was bad, very hesitant, didn't understand. Around 5/6/11 it seems there was a little distortion, might explain wiggles. #8 as well, not sure what was up, but the control was at the red bend in the qr route, at the top of the circle, assuming the gps track is in the right place. Going to #10 I was on the north side of the stream.

Big mistakes to #17 and #19. Poor. I lost the racing spirit after Ken disappeared en route to 16. He caught me on the way to 9, so I sped up for a few controls.

Lots of fun, but would be better with fitness. Left knee was tender afterwards, PSU problem recurred.

I like the # link thing that pops up now to make it easy to get urls of training entries. Simple but great, like all of AP.

Slept like crap last night again, nose half clogged.

J-J is also pretty amazing. Not flawless, but amazing.

trail run 48:38 [3] 6.73 km (7:14 / km)

up to the top of Blue Mountain, not exactly what I had intended, but it was lovely out...

Tired later, bailed on climbing.

Yesterday evening, dozed on the couch from 6.30-8.30 instead of going for a jog, then grabbed a bite to eat, sent a couple of emails etc, went to bed 10.something, didn't sleep till after 1. Don't remember when I awoke, probably 7 or 8.

Wow I should have signed up for this a long time ago. If I were american I'd say it was awesome.

7 HVO people out today, no beginners. Laura put out the streamers (I managed to forget to bring them, so cut up a shopping bag on the way down in the car) for the first loop, Marek did the second, with a little help, Bjorn did most of the third and I did 20-22. Sweet. Ran the first loop fairly hard, less hard on the second, but tried to keep moving (stopped to look for the tag at 8). Third loop I was a bit less fluid. Took breaks between loops to hang out and chat.

Impressive performance from the flying Dutchman holding off the challenge from the Viennoiserie on the first two loops. Marek collected loop 2, I did loop 1, and Peter and Angela collected the third. A wonderful way to spend a warm and sunny afternoon.

At some point the US Middle Champs should be held at Saxon Woods. It's a wonderful area and a beautifully drawn map, if a little old.

running 21:00 [3]

A wee jog in new (in the sense that I haven't worn them since they were bought before christmas) shoes to try them, plus my knee, out. The shoes were fine. Did a 69s 400m just for kicks.
