Ahh Helena:
"Nu sitter jag här och pysslar med ett projekt som kanske eller kanske inte får ett resultat som kan vara till nytta för någon. Ack, nackdelen med att älska Irving är att i stunder som denna hör jag ständigt Dr Wilbur Larch säga "you have to be of use". Det är ytterst tveksamt om jag är till nytta för någon, och det är ovant.

Jag ska till Italien nästa vecka. Träningsläger i Castellaneta Marina, i hålfoten.

Note

well, www.irishtimes.com seems to have just destroyed their own website today, adding lots of pictures and making it hideous.

skiing 1:15 [3]

Paloheinä
Neck didn't bother me skiing until I fell at the end when I was trying to play with technique. I stopped then, plus twice to put on/take off sun-glasses, and once early on to put on a buff.

Lovely out. Sometimes the snow felt fast, other times like sand.

Note

Now feeling like a bit of a cripple. I'm sure Ali told me skiing would cure me.

Bus to work today :(

Neck still cricked. And of course sleep wasn't great because of it either.

Erin, d'après Barb: "The reality of being an elite athlete is that you have to put in your training. You have to get your nine hours of sleep. You have to have consistency. "

I read for a couple of hours (As you like it, not his best but some good lines) before going to sleep around midnight, woke at 3... broken sleep till 9... lately I've been getting a 4-5 hour block before switching to broken, last night was poor. ENT doctor prescribed a month of steroidal nasal spray and a salty spray, said my turbinates are inflamed and swollen. If spray doesn't work, other options will be considered.

Feel crappy today. Plus after running to work, coming out of the shower I got a crick in my neck. Hohum.

running 50:00 [3]

The run home was slow, in anti-Ross mode, trying not to move my head too much, while treading on icy paths.

to work

woke at 5, stayed awake till 9ish, then slept to 11, woken by housekeeping, otherwise I might have stayed in bed all day. Did more Finnish than maths at work. ENT tomorrow.

running 25:00 [3]

And home again. Thought I had plenty of time, but hadn't. Must leave the office earlier.

In class, we were told the story of Matti and Mervi, the Olympian and his sausage lady... and alcoholism and his friend and a knife and a jail... the orienteering version is a fairytale in comparison.

Our teacher has been married for 35 years, and she and her husband have never said, "I love you" to each other. They know, and anyway it would sound pathetic. Or suspicious. He does call her, "soul", while she calls him "reindeer".

Within my family I've never heard "I love you" spoken either, though I imagine my parents said it at some point.

Legs felt better, and I did better maths... until 8pm... a bit late to be leaving the office, but finished an iteration of a manuscript...

running 50:00 [3]

Passed a HS lad (Veli, I think) on the way in.

Tired by late afternoon, left the office too late, and there was a blizzard, so by the time I got home and had a three minute shower it was 6:05, so skipped Finnish class. Oops.

To and from work

Except instead of work it was Korttelirastit, trail-o starting from the carpark outside my office window.

After some thawing mid-week, it froze again yesterday, and I was wondering whether to go with Bolds or trail shoes with a lot of the pavements clear. Happily it snowed plenty last night, so the choice was easy.

-6, I ditched the jacket at the start and ran with long sleeve thermal + o-top, light gloves and buff. Worked fine. This week's version was on not so exciting 1:10000 map (unlike the one three weeks ago on ISSOM map), just an excuse to go out for something approaching a tempo run (though with the temperatures...).

A couple of 10s hesitations, one 15s mistake, and one tighten-the-shoelace stop. Beautiful out, even in ugly parts of Helsinki.
