orienteering race 1:37:00 [4] *** 11.0 km (8:49 / km)
25c

IOC Long
Slieve Croob, NI.

Weather: windy, wet, cold. Visibility (when not running into the wind) was mostly good. Only a patch of fog at the 3rd control. Brief snow around 12. Properly wet, windy and cold.

Clothes: Normal O-gear plus HS jacket. No buff, that was a mistake.

Body:
Legs were reasonably good, clearly not fast enough, but they enjoyed the running.
Fingers: when heading past the drinks station, I couldn't feel the map. Most of my fingers were numb, left fore was the worst, so I ran with two fingers in my mouth for 50m. In general, not too bad.
Lips: While eating my fingers, I noticed my lips were numb. I'm not sure that has happened to me before.
Eyes: Coming back into the wind post-14, they got hit hard by rain (I don't think it was hail). Left eye the vision started to go, I'm not sure whether it was because of the beating or because of the cold. Until a few minutes after finishing, vision was shaky, regardless of the wind and the rain.
Forehead: When rubbing around my eyes, I realised my forehead was numb.
Ears: Left ear got pretty sore running to 4/5. Coming back to 6, the right ear took it hard. This got repeated from time to time throughout. Holing map to shelter ear seemed like a good idea but was ineffective.
Brain: From 15 or 16 on, my brain started to go. Motor control (okay, to climb the stile, place hand on post, step on stile, keep balance, lean slightly forwards, step over... complicated operation), etc... thoughts started to turn to getting down off the mountain. Thankfully legs were able to keep running, I wasn't actually running out of energy.

Mistakes started appearing a bit after overtaking Paddy. 9 was the biggest one, no crux, and wind at my back made me misjudge distance and climb, not that I was hugely off. Plus the weather made stopping and thinking clearly difficult. Stopping was usually followed by "Oh god, I'm going to freeze if I don't keep moving. Please let me find the control", or similar.
Slight weave to 10, then 13 I ran to where I thought the control should be, nothing... could see the re-entrant continued further down, but didn't see flag and didn't think that that was where it ought to be. Ran away, came back, control was there. Not convinced.

Then fine for a bit, hesitant to 16, but it was the control one could see from ages away. To 17 I fell in a marsh and considered staying there, nice and warm and sheltered. Small miss at 19, but was probably close to a minute.

Stumbled from there to the finish. Kept running to download, downloaded beside a shivering Ciara, then ran/stumbled to the car, pulled my clothes off, sat in, dried off with a buff, put on all dry clothes available, slowly warmed up.

Felt not *too* bad a while later, walked back up to the assembly to collect my clothes, saw a deathly Toni finish, got some hot tea, that was good, then more hot tea, that was good... ... ...

This may sound mad, but it was a lot of fun.

IOC Sprint
Lisburn.

Not too complicated, lost a few seconds maybe three or four times. My best splits were all sub 20s, means my running speed is even worse than it looks.

SI air (punch-free) is pretty amazing. Only bémol is it didn't work properly, so Darren is Irish Champ and not Nick. Was it just a battery that died? Not good, anyway.

Nearly got hypothermia afterwards because getting a plaster for some scratches took twenty minutes. :)

Note

Not too much sleep the past few nights. Flew to Dublin today, taxi service arrived ten minutes after I got my bag. Thank you, Burkes.

Note

I think there's a bus from Dublin airport to Lisburn tomorrow, but in case anyone is passing and wants to pick up a me, let me know! Cheers.
I get in at midday.

trail run 1:10:00 [3]

Evening run, Lignon loop, except I tried to cut up instead of continuing under Pont Butin at dusk. Intruded into three (swanky) gardens before finding may up to the road.

AOWN. Out near the cows I heard a noise, stepped back a pace, and from almost under my feet a fox popped out.

La Rochette
Ch. Ligue de Sprint

I got a nc run after all the competitive people. 2.40 down on the fastest... clearly I'm slow. Good course made the most of not the most interesting terrain. And good training for the IOC, quite relevant as it turned out.
