Currently listening to https://genebeveridge.nz/podcast/perfect-flow-25/

Gene mentions process: route, attackpoint, control, exit.
Pasi: It is important to know the area around the control.

By association, I think about mathematics, how we first approach proofs, one line following from the next. We can check that the proof is correct and, with some memorisation of key steps, reproduce it. As we attain mastery, we have a global idea of how the proof works and the mental effort to reproduce a proof is negligible.

In chess, beginners check one or two or maybe three moves ahead without necessarily having a global understanding of position and structure.

Developing the capability to attain global understanding takes mental rewiring and maturity. To do so, the step-by-step process is important. The goal is to transcend this and attain mastery.

Note

Also, they talk about what one does when one has "shit in the pants". I would have called this, alarm bells ringing, but hey. I improved quite a bit when I would visualise races I ran earlier in the day and pay attention to the points where there was shit in my pants but ignored it and continued to make a mistake; then I would re-shoot imagining myself paying attention to the mess and correcting *before* I made a mistake.
The first step is to hear the alarm bells. The key point then is to train yourself to act on them.
