By association, I think about mathematics, how we first approach proofs, one line following from the next. We can check that the proof is correct and, with some memorisation of key steps, reproduce it. As we attain mastery, we have a global idea of how the proof works and the mental effort to reproduce a proof is negligible.
In chess, beginners check one or two or maybe three moves ahead without necessarily having a global understanding of position and structure.
Developing the capability to attain global understanding takes mental rewiring and maturity. To do so, the step-by-step process is important. The goal is to transcend this and attain mastery.
