Endurance (low intensity) warm up/down (Running) 20:00 [2]

Friday Apr 28, 2006 #

Endurance (low intensity) long (Running) 40:00 [2]

A short run on the beach on the North upper arm of Cape Cod.

This was only 1 hour after a big lunch, and I was pleasantly surprised how little my stomach complained.

My throat is still sore though. :(

Endurance (low intensity) warm up/down (Running) 25:00 [2]

Intervals intervals (Running) 23:52 [4]

5 x 800 w/200 rest (start every 6 minutes*)

Comment 1) I forgot to bring my watch, so timing was done by expert mobile Finnish timers.

Comment 2) We started out with 4:30 between starts, but moved it up to 5:00, then 5:30, then 6:00 after some complaints from senior participants. The increasing rest made for an interesting workout.

Relay.

Zan, Gail and Peter had given me a very good starting point - a few minutes behind Vadim, and a few minutes before Maricel. I was doing pretty good until controls 11 and 12, where tiredness / lack of concentration made me pick poor routes. Because of this, Maricel almost caught up by the spectator control. We both spiked 13, but I hesitated on 14 and Maricel passed me. He picked a very green route to 15, whereas I stayed to the right and avoided it. Eventually he decided to follow me, but at that point we had gone too far South, and had to head East to get to the control.

Going up to 16, I stayed in the riverbed whereas Maricel climbed up on the left side a bit early. As we were getting nearer to the erosion gullys, Vadim hesitated whereas I was pretty confident. Eventually he ended up a bit too low, whereas I climbed over the spur and nailed it.

Climbing out of 16, Maricel chose to stay to the left whereas I went via the road on the right. My choice made me lose valuable seconds sliding up the initial muddy hill, and Maricel meat me by a few seconds to 17.

I tried to catch him in the final sprint, but he managed to fend me off by a second or two.
