Note

So, it looks like this is happening for this coming year.

Some of the best orienteers in Spain--a majority, perhaps--are coming together to rent out a house in Hoyo de Manzanares... and I'm going with them.

Hoyo is a great place for orienteering. Close to the city, but surrounded by countryside. I hesitate to say woods since it isn't really forest. The maps there are some of the most challenging we have in Madrid. Also, the "mountains" just north of town are high enough to get some serious hilly long runs in, without going overboard on the climb.

Let's see. A tentative list of who will be there: Andreu, Pau, Edu, Rafemu, me... and more possibly coming. With those athletes, we'll get to the level of a decent Scandinavian club. But the important part is we're all focused on a goal and prepared to help each other out to reach it.

I fear for the state of cleanliness of the house. I've lived in XC houses with eight guys before and seen how much some people struggle to clean, but I know we'll make it through that.

Very, very optimistic.

Running 45:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:30 / km) +150m 4:11 / km

Trail running north of town.

Followed by 90 pushups, 20xPedestal, 5 minute plank.

Running 40:00 [3] 8.0 km (5:00 / km) +200m 4:27 / km

Warm-up and cooldown.

Note

It's a long way off. But if anyone is interested in visiting Spain and enjoying some great orienteering, I recommend the Spanish Championship for next year. http://ceo2017.es/?page_id=13&lang=en

It's in a beautiful spot in the mountains just north of Madrid. Definitely worth the trip.

Middle distance in Peguerino's northern rocky area. This is one of the two middle simulations I'll do this week. Essentially, doing everything as I would at NAOC. Warmup, routine, call-up, start time.

I was running very well...until my map disintegrated from 6-5 (I did it backwards) from my sweat before the course. I should have carried it in my hand and not put it in my backpack. Oh well. It was a good course until that interruption and that's what counts.

Running long 1:30:00 [3] 16.15 km (5:34 / km) +371m 5:00 / km

Mixed terrain and trail running. Should have started earlier but I was finishing some things up. About 93% recovered from being sick.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [3] 6.0 km (6:40 / km) +280m 5:24 / km

Easy out and back. I keep trying to find a fast way to get through the steep stream. Nothing so far. Just have to traverse it.

Also... blackberry season has begun! Pretty hard to tear myself away from this after my run. https://goo.gl/photos/fQxgGVoRJejcEQ7P7

Middle distance course in Pegue. Good to get back out here. The clean air and beautiful forest are good for the body and soul.

I think I am in good shape. I held back my body considerably during this because I wanted to focus my energy on executing everything well, not on racing. The map I used is actually a little old. The newer map reads better, but this worked just fine.

Supplementary Jog 20:00 [2] 3.2 km (6:15 / km)

Running 45:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:00 / km) +200m 4:30 / km

Terrain running in Peguerinos with 10x20/40s to feel speed in the forest. It rained for an hour and a half before this run. Glorious temperature after the rain.

Followed by 90 pushups, 20xpedestal, and 5 minute plank.
I decided to come up to Pegue for my last week in Spain before going stateside for a few reasons (1) the reasonable temperatures mean I can actually train and sleep well, (2) it's more beneficial to do intense forest workouts here than in dry, dry Casa de Campo, and (3) who doesn't want to be in a beautiful spot in the mountains?
