Out with Matt, the owner of Scranton Running Co and former US mountain running team member.
He and I were checking out some of the trails back there until we got to a few off-trail sections. I offered to turn around and take the trails back around, but he wanted to go straight through. I was in my comfort zone running over the rocky ground with blueberries. He didn't seem to be. Still, he made it through relatively unscathed.
I was happy to check out new areas for orienteering. This stuff is seriously so cool. Very different from the other terrain I've seen in the Northeast. This area might be a bit too open to be truly challenging, but I'm hoping to get out for some night-O there.
Matt seemed intrigued by orienteering and his off-trail traverse with me was fairly advanced for someone who's never orienteered before. I also had a lengthy conversation with some younger guys down at the bike shop about trail running and orienteering. There's a small outdoors sport community here, but it seems to be growing fast. Maybe we can get orienteering in at the ground level.
