Black Diamond Trail 5k on Montage Mountain

I wasn't sure what I'd have in my legs, but I decided to give it a shot and see. If I had to jog, I'd jog.

I definitely felt tired, but still good enough for 2nd behind Ben Robinson (Hoka-sponsored athlete). So I guess it is true that we have much more in us than we think.

Wanted to bike over, but since Rob and Brenda were coming through town I didn't have enough time for the return trip. I'm going to start my car-lite summer experiment today.

Running 8:43 intensity: (2:50 @1) + (5:53 @2) 1.06 km (8:13 / km) +15m 7:41 / km

Slate Run 25k

My friend Steve rocked it and I came in 2nd ten minutes after him. But he's been doing efforts like this all spring. This is my first hard 2-hour run. Looking forward to more races like this over the summer to continue to build fitness.

Skiking 19:41 intensity: (2 @1) + (18 @2) + (18:26 @3) + (55 @4) 3.99 km (4:56 / km) +11m 4:52 / km

Steve and I went skiing afterwards. My Achilles/ankle was quite sore after the race, but this loosened it up so much. Both Steve and I felt great after this. Really beneficial for recovery.

Biking out to Choke Creek Falls.

It's amazing how a long day of cycling like this feels so much easier than 40 minutes of orienteering in Harriman. Coasting the downhills helps with that.

Cycling 1:27:33 intensity: (25:50 @1) + (37:35 @2) + (22:42 @3) + (1:26 @4) 37.77 km (25.9 kph) +431m

Again, I tried to memorize each leg before running them. Worked pretty well and easier to maintain direction in the green and vague areas with my compass : )

Feeling pretty tired and my Achilles was hurting. So I'm heading home. Also not very motivated without any big events on the immediate horizon. That's fine. I'll get back to it soon. Gotta let the fire build back up.

Technically this course went well. But physically it was just tough to fight through so much leafed-out blueberry. I did have a few hesitations here and there though. They probably added up to close to a minute.

Circuit Training 15:00 [3]

Kettlebell routine

I'm joining Kevin and Sydney for a short camp in Harriman over the next few days.

But I also spoke with the ESC to say that I'd prefer not to be selected for WOC if a spot became available. I don't like rushing to specifically prepare for a race a few weeks out, especially when it is a significant investment of time, effort, and money.

I am planning on racing at the Italian World Cup in September when international travel is (hopefully) significantly less complicated. And since there are no team trials I can focus specifically on preparing for that event and putting all the pieces in place.

I'm planning on taking a few bike tours over the summer also. So I'm quite excited for that.

Rerun of a winter series course

Forgot my compass at the campsite so I decided to practice basing my navigation only the terrain since that's possible here.

Also from 9 to finish I only looked at the map for 10 seconds at the start of each leg. The rest of each leg was on memory. It's always surprising how much faster I can run that way.

Checking out some new terrain. I did very little work on the map because I usually try to decide if the terrain is worth the effort before putting more work into it. This definitely merits more work. Very technical forest. Hickory Run-style beech forest, but generally more open with rocky ground in the lower, swampy bits and a few large boulders here and there.

Ben and Danny joined me but bailed before 11. We decided to shorten the course to 11 after a collapsed bridge made our warmup significantly longer.

The georeferencing was off by about 30m. I believe it's because the whole map is large enough (160km2) that some distortion is starting to take effect. I'll have to test again with a smaller map.

This map is also a bikeable distance from my house. That's fun.

Running 22:01 intensity: (20 @1) + (4:24 @2) + (9:47 @3) + (7:30 @4) 4.24 km (5:12 / km) +55m 4:53 / km
