Finally able to take a moment to log UTMB - or at least what I finished of it. Phenomenal trip but a disappointing Race Day unfortunately, as I overheated within the first 20-30km off the start. Of the six 100k+ ultras I've now been to I've overheated at five of them, so this was familiar territory, but never so early on (usually I'm able to at least crawl to the finish!) I pulled the plug at 64k when things started to really shut down, as I just couldn't seem to get my body temp under control (it was close to freezing through the night, but I was in shorts the whole time and sweating profusely). With a full day of nothing but sun and warm temperatures forecasted for the day ahead (all of which I would have been running through even on my best time estimate), this one just didn't appear to be in the cards.

The only explanation that make sense to me (other than the ridiculously massive climbs on this ridiculously massive racecourse) is the fact that I foolishly waited over 2 hours in the blazing sun at the start chute. I think I might have cooked myself before I even got started - and all just to try and save a few mintues by securing good position in the queue. Seems now like the most rookie-ish of all rookie mistakes I could have possible made - definitely won't ever do THAT again!

This one will sting for a bit, as what was most frustrating was the fact that I honestly didn't feel like I had gone out too hard, and that my legs felt really strong despite my stomach feeling so weak. On a run with Bent on Monday where I headed up the final climb beyond Vallorcine back to Chamonix, I felt as a nimble as a mountain goat, and vowed then and there to return ASAP to finish this bugger. Fortunately I only need two points to re-apply for 2014, so training starts now...

So glad to have had Browner there with me for this incredible trip, and to have shared the experience with Bash, Bent, Mrs Gally, WandAR, Tiny, Mrs. Tiny, Myka, Meg-eh and Tiny's friend Mike (and also to catch up with the Cameron clan!) So great to haven gotten to see Bash off as she made her final push from Courmayeur despite the cut-off odds being against her (the two of us will earn those red finisher vests yet!) Huge congrats as well to Bent, Mrs. Gally, Tiny and WandAR for all having knocked off the CCC course!
