Thursday Feb 28

skiing 35:00 [3]2.8 mi (12:29 / mi)
at SPS at noon, classic skis. Problem with binding day before Snowgaine, straightened out by midday. A flustered failure this am but good for Beth w/ new skis.

Wednesday Feb 27

trail/woods running 43:00 [3]4.1 mi (10:29 / mi)
w/ Diane & David, her office mate & soc worker. Slushy but OK. David made more lively.
skiing (classic) 20:00 [2]1.7 mi (11:46 / mi)
w/ Z&M outback on classic skis, on snow mobile tracks. New skis, nice glide. Getting to thinking about Snowgaine, long way from hills of Az.

Tuesday Feb 26

trail/woods running 43:00 [3]4.2 mi (10:14 / mi)
at noon w/ Diane before snow, felt good.
weights 17:00 [1]
gym on way home from work.

Sunday Feb 24

orienteering race 42:35 [5]4.8 km (8:52 / km) +175m 7:30 / km
day 2, considerably better. About 1 & 3/4ths min mistakes, on #4 & 5 from not looking carefully/long enough at map but at least figuring out what was wrong in 20"-30" at most. Could have, at best, been 40' plus, Sam Saeger at 32+, a few 38-9 (incl meet director) & a couple under 42' as well. Lovely land, coldish moonlit nights/frozen water first night), coyotes yapping, hot days, welcome sunrises, brilliant sunsets, one windy night, windy middays, 2 unstaked tents that blew afar, 3 nights camping/creative 'showers', very starry nights before moon, a potluck dinner, a dark & lonely road that warned of illegals & drug smuggling (Thurs night when the place was apparently empty). Visited Tombstone/Boothill. Finished up with Colossal Cave & Sagauro Nat'l Monument & night at Red Roof short dist from Phoenix airport. With Deb Humiston & daughter Hannah. Easy SW nonstop flt back to 46 deg at 1730 & car that started.

Saturday Feb 23

orienteering race 1:01:13 [5]5.6 km (10:56 / km) +170m 9:29 / km
day 1 Western States champs, good run except for second control, lost about 7 1/2 min comparing to Ron Bortz (2:27 to my 10:20), ran about in circles & then back to sight first control as in compleat amateur. Energy OK but looking at M45 red or, say, Samantha Saeger on my same course shows that old age is upon me.
orienteering race 23:45 [5]2.9 km (8:11 / km) +90m 7:05 / km
PM sprint, good run however tired. Maybe 30" errors, beat most of others over M50, incl Ron Hudson by 16".

Saturday Feb 2

skiing (classic) 3:29:00 [3]27.5 km (7:36 / km)
Craftsbury ski marathon (tour). 3 hr drive in slushy to ice conditions to St
Johnsbury motel w/ Beth, Z&M.Another hr to Craftsbury Common this AM. Had rained there last night. 2 hr delay to start time. Energy pretty good, new waxless skis, still sliding, tiring last 3 or so km. Cold fingers for a period, fell only once. More ups & fast downs than I recalled from 2005. Ski pole problems - baskets reversed, points sticking in hard surface & strap frustration. Good to put out some effort for an extended period. Was ahead of Udo for alot of distance. Met Eiwind Rynning, Peaks I, Portland, ME sailing/climbing, can't-sit-still elderly Norwegian. All in all, nice job by sponsors. Beth skied at Craftsbury outdoor center.
150 mi home via 93; did not get 89/91 distance. Ice-encrusted drive w/ stuck car.

Friday Feb 1

trail/woods running 41:00 [3]4.3 mi (9:31 / mi)
