Monday Mar 31

road running 59:23 [3]6.9 mi (8:36 / mi) +165m 4:59 / km
home fm NHH, raining hard at start, slowed to drizzle, became an OK experience & better than alternative - drive home, deal with dogs, curtail expectation. Rt heel sore, need to change insole arrangement. Energy OK. Added climb of 165m - not done before.

Sunday Mar 30

orienteering 1:38:59 [3]**** 6.1 km (16:14 / km) +110m 14:53 / km
spiked:13/16c
Rocky Woods red course. Perfect weather, bare woods, also very rocky (duh), reminding me of bad times at WP & Blue Hills from foot pain when soles are too light. Had 2 bad controls early on, one on a hillside with lots of unmapped rock & some missing cliffs as well. Situation where map was inadequate (fldchecked Jan'89, no update). Temperamental from poor map feedback. More or less became noncompetitive, an opportunity to orienteer/run on a nice day...place to start for new season if Az didn't count -- which already seems far away as well as separate.
Covered 7.9k by ocad measure. Stopped in Newton on way back:120 Pleasant/Mason-Rice school/Tuthill's old apt, NWH, Beth's first Newton home from early '60's...memory lane indeed.

Saturday Mar 29

road running 1:03:48 [3]6.5 mi (9:49 / mi)
same loop as last Sat but CCW; felt cold at start, NW day, never really warm. Outdoor about 1630. W/ BG 2 wks away, excuse time is non-existent.

Shoes not cushioning enough...or maybe too much paved rd for the age... Need to add contour profile.

Friday Mar 28

skiing 1:01:00 [3]4.3 km (14:11 / km)
w/ Z&M on a Fri pm, had 4-5" wet snow, still nice to be out if we must deal with this much snow...snowshoe tracks just behind house...must be neighbor's - rare sighting.

Thursday Mar 27

road running 30:00 [3]3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
w/ Diane at noon, abbreviated run, self-conscious re not attending "Schwartz Rnds" & Luckoor/Iber away sans coverage..
road running 56:40 [3]6.8 mi (8:20 / mi)
home fm NHH - shorter route by 0.1mi & same time as PR fm 4/25/06.
Never tired/ not OOB but wanted to slack off some 10%...and a lousy 8:20/mi

Wednesday Mar 26

road running 35:21 [3]4.0 mi (8:51 / mi)
noon run w/ Dave & Diane, finished in t shirt, spring for time being.
skiing 20:00 [2]1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
on skis out back, cheap entry, should enter all dog walk time:)
Later, it will be enterable as dog jog time. Nice to slush around, just a few hundred meters outback occ seems like being isolated in nature.
Don't know where 7 day mileage total comes from until I look back & check addition.

Tuesday Mar 25

road running 50:10 [3]5.3 mi (9:28 / mi)
w/ Diane at noon; new shoes (New Balance 1011), stopped 3 times to rearrange insole on right, not exactly floating on air.

Monday Mar 24

road running 36:04 [3]4.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
w/ David & Diane, perfect running weather. Came home, spotted new shoes in garage.
road running 58:49 [3]6.9 mi (8:31 / mi)
home from NHH, perked up & found me racing myself vis-a-vis splits. After 2 mi, took off top for just T-neck which was better operating temp.
Expectation to do better w/ more mileage & belief that I haven't really been trying on this route past years, time for a slight adjustment....

Sunday Mar 23

skiing 30:00 [3]1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
at Bear Brook, thought I'd have a nice long ski but icy & indeed crappy in all respects except for sunshine. Wasted visit.
trail/woods running 45:32 [3]4.0 mi (11:22 / mi)
after earlier experience at BBSP, went w/ Z&M out back - less debris on snow here prob because more hemlock (more flexible boughs?) vs white pine, more brittle to wind? Lots of icy snow-mobiled trails at BB, not so here. Had Nottingcook map in hand, made a few changes.

Saturday Mar 22

skiing 52:00 [2]2.8 mi (18:33 / mi) +90m 10:30 / km
rhr:50 weight:169.9lbs
XC w/ Z&M out back, lovely, sunny. Crust in shade, soft in sun. Nice in woods. Prefer skis to snowshoes when possible.

road running 1:05:21 [3]* 6.5 mi (10:03 / mi)
up Allen, WH, Bow Cntr Rd, BBR, Allen loop, CW. Tired, hypoglycemic just before halfway. Great view on top of Wood Hill, first 22' is all up.

Friday Mar 21

road running 40:00 [3]4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
noon hr w/ Diane, very windy, still no new shoes on home front.

Thursday Mar 20

road running 38:10 [3]4.0 mi (9:32 / mi)
w/ Diane at noon, still old shoes but different pr. Felt OK, much better than yest when I went home & slept an hr.
road running 59:24 [3]6.9 mi (8:36 / mi)
home fm work, another near 11 mi day. Felt strong, happens on rare occasions. Never tired, blustery gray. Changed inserts fm one pr shoes to another which was helpful. This route is about :30 sec longer.

Monday Mar 17

road running 39:47 [3]4.0 mi (9:57 / mi)
w/ Diane at noon, bright, lovely early spring day, snow has receded from roadside.
road running 1:05:23 [3]6.99 mi (9:21 / mi)
home from NHH, making it around 11mi for day. Legs OK but shoes are awful, on last legs, have new ones arriving any day, no protection. Also, baggy outfit & cell phone/beeper fanny pack bouncing on waist - need to streamline some. 3' slower than last Thurs. Left 1st MTP throbbing a bit fm hard surface.

Sunday PM jog, tired as usual. No dogs, which meant I could run in street...good footing, no wet feet. Did not wish to complete any loops which would have been 5 plus mi.
snowshoes 25:00 [1]1.5 mi (16:39 / mi)
w/Beth & dogs, loosen up, use snowshoes

Saturday Mar 15

trail/woods running 41:09 [3]4.0 mi (10:17 / mi)
w/ Z&M in Nottingcook, some new snow, wet, slushy, tiring, Had to stop & warm my right toes.

Friday Mar 14

trail/woods running 52:50 [3]5.3 mi (9:58 / mi)
w/ Diane at lunch, a bit tired from yest - need to add miles.

Thursday Mar 13

trail/woods running 1:02:16 [4]6.9 mi (9:00 / mi)
Home fm NHH, last time 10/30 & before 5/17/07. Felt OK, don't like tights, longer option at beginning about :45" longer. Good start for new season.

at noon with Diane & Dave who runs a bit faster.
skiing (skake skiing) 25:00 [3]2.0 mi (12:29 / mi)
w/ Z&M, soft but OK except for mild debris from trees etc

Tuesday Mar 11

trail/woods running 25:00 [3]2.0 mi (12:29 / mi)
AM before med procedure; snow surface hard, could jog a bit in woods, freedom.

Sunday Mar 9

trail/woods running 45:00 [3]4.0 mi (11:14 / mi)
at Berry Hill, clear & cold, lots of deer. Ran mostly in corn fields, not much of an assortment of paths.
Note
VA marks end of 4 weekends in a row O-related:

Eastern Reg Ski O champs: Gunstock, Windblown
Tucson A meet in Sta Rita foothills, Az
Snowgaine at Winona SF
Prince William forest, USOC visit

more activity than I'd imagined & got away with re work.

Saturday Mar 8

orienteering 1:15:00 [3]6.3 km (11:54 / km)
Ran first day green Y USOC, again began partway thru course & then cont'd when I got to start triangle. Did not like #1 (seemed more green than mapped & I w/o leaves) , area was easy to find but could not distinguish any singular green. Less rain but still a double-header of a wet experience.

After, on to Berry Hill Farm, Brandy Station; Orange (Woodberry Forest/Bill Boyd's grave search) & Montpelier (James & Dolly Madison) then to BWI for 8:35 flt to Mch w/ lovely view of lit-up NYC.

Friday Mar 7

orienteering 1:38:00 [2]8.5 km (11:32 / km)
at PW F w/ Beth, green Y, day 2 USOC from last Nov. Rain began just as I began. Easier of the 2 days, started partway thru course due to closed road. 68' &jogged/walked about 30' (2.5K) from finish to start triangle. Very wet, fairly chilly by return to car. Not much in way of mistakes, a bit hard to see, rain uninspiring. #13, bridge, was evidentally day-only which fooled me for awhile & crossed on rock bridge, off 60m on other side....

Bk to Best Value, warm, dry; tired from poor sleep/flt. Dinner @ Globe & Laurel, Beth recalled our being there before, I recalled once inside seeing all the MC mementos.

Thursday Mar 6

trail/woods running 42:44 [3]4.3 mi (9:57 / mi)
at noon w/ Diane, nice, warm/sunny

Wednesday Mar 5

trail/woods running 41:24 [2]2.6 mi (15:55 / mi)
after work, at home out back, on soft snow, tiring - should have skied.

Tuesday Mar 4

trail/woods running 40:02 [3]4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
at noon before rain, sluggish from weekend.
weights 20:00 [1]
gym on way home

Sunday Mar 2

orienteering race (ski) 7:20:00 [3]28 km (15:43 / km)
Day 2 Snowgaine, sunny, above 30 deg, lovely. Worked out kinks in body. Still more things to negotiate in creative fasion. Lots of bumps, one particularly sloppy stream crossing w/ temporary loss of map. Finished at 1620, was bk at Harris for shower & away at 1708...402 mi home (5hrs 37min) by 2245 via mass Pike. Went via Keene, Brattleboro, Bennington, Troy, 325 mi, 5hrs 38min. Was a winter storm at home (10") but made it all the way there w/o much snowfall at all. Great experience, not sure about a next time. Was oldest there, ARs were under 40, maybe 30 competitors total. Funniest sight of weekend was 2 mt bike competitors (must take bike to control) pedalling with snowshoes on & disappearing over 6 foot plus snowbank into deep, snowy woods, a puzzle as to how they did what they did.
C • gear 1

Saturday Mar 1

orienteering race (ski) 8:00:00 [3]28 km (17:09 / km)
10th Snowgaine w/ Charlie Leonard. Temp around 26 deg, occ snow squalls, put glasses away for awhile. Lots of powder, imaginative stream crossings & climbing out of some reentrants. Snow surface was hard to see in white-out at times. Nav was good w/ 2 experienced people. Charlie has a 6th sense about Winona. Glad to be done, anorack was soaked from snow as were mittens. Needed to not stop to keep from cold. NIght at Harris Lodging, Sandy Creek with Hawkes-Teeters, some adventure racers.
