Note

Rest day - work plus BOS mtg plus mostly poor sleep. AM was too hurried & so sampled the BHS fields for skate on the way home but by 2:30, it was too late even in what passed for shade. Surprised to see that the track was completely clear of snow by then, with the T not getting much above 30F. Bright blue & windy fun anyway.

Trail/road 1:04:55 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (49:55 @2) 4.4 mi (14:45 / mi) +122m 13:35 / mi

Bog loop, up Allen, left on WH & back thru Nottingcook. Snowing pretty hard, maybe 3" on the ground. Wintry day, don't think the temp got to hi 20s.

Trail/road 32:25 intensity: (4:00 @1) + (28:25 @2) 2.14 mi (15:09 / mi) +78m 13:36 / mi

Had a visit from Peter & grandkids. Beth, Mocha, myself and the youngsters traced the brook over to the brush dump road as part of entertainment. Dylan needed a coat, hat and scarf - left his warm stuff home for whatever reason. Glad to see them & relieved to see them go, such is the “inquisition” and nonstop display of energy & curiosity.

After made my own "adventure" on a local route, emerging at end of Arnold. Managed a genuine faceplant on a root - had gloves on which saved the palms. Face just about "supplicated" the Earth. The day, which began with snow-laced branches and white ground, was notable for the wind & chill. Tough on the plants trying out April.

Adventure is everywhere

Track 40:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (5:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) 3.5 mi (11:26 / mi)

BHS track, gray, cool, about right. Walk 100, run 100 for a mi, then walk 100, run 200 for same & finally walk 100 run 300 for a mile. Reasonable workout. Got HR up satisfactorily for me. Got out 310 HRM for first time - seems to need a fresh battery. 25 mi for the week beats quite a few preceding weeks.

Note

Granite Road: Beth and Mocha at Hogencamp, 2011. What rock(y) wonder visits to Pound Ridge, Harriman and West Point can produce.

Not sure what I'd do with this Flying Pig leg - perhaps the terrain was talking out loud to the runner.

Note

From house to/up OJR to an SVT but not to the power line intersection. Finally got to the PL, dodging wet areas/swamps and finally, finally to Dicandra Dr., then across to WH and home thru the woods.

Misplaced or lost the ANT stick for time being so g-maps approximation it is. Chilly/breezy but fine in woods. 310Xt had this wander for 6.00mi so this is a good reproduction.

Encountered this encampment today. Looked like a one day stand, reachable by 4 WD. Also this solar light on a tree opposite.
I need to return for some scavenging/recycling. How stupid, simple, wasteful people can be.

Trail/road 50:05 intensity: (25:05 @1) + (25:00 @2) 3.08 mi (16:16 / mi) +98m 14:48 / mi

Parked at Winant Hill parking, up the hill but not to the top. Hit a myriad of paths, most old and faint. There were a few serpentine path systems that appeared to have been leaf blown, perhaps for MTB - they took me nowhere. One doubled back, passing within 10' of itself. Finally came out on Thackerway threading between houses on a blazed trail. Was very hypoglycemic-feeling, dead all over kind of thing. Bought a sandwich at Cimo's after. Breezy, temp in lo 70s. Followed by T showers.

To start triangle, maybe my longest trek.

Orienteering 1:29:10 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (29:10 @2) 3.47 mi (25:42 / mi) +63m 24:20 / mi

Bear Brook, warm breezy day. Found a suitable pre-printed map (not sure for what event/reason, given start location), no NS lines, scale appeared to be 1/7500. Start was on trail on east shore of Bear Hill Pond. As I left the house, I did consider that the gate above Podunk parking might be closed. Was not going back in to get any other BB maps, however. It was closed and it was a long trip to the start.

The first few points were fine, then trouble with boulders as mapped. Actually lost map contact along the edge of the one unmapped section, bailed W to the trail, relocated and continued, only to lose contact again - same subject, namely, boulder interpretation. Spent time in the arborized logging areas which are now scratchy and best avoided. Finally came on the path again and made way back to Podunk Rd & parking. Feel like I need a break from BB map & woods - too familiar, too scratchy, often too thick etc.

Came home & drove Beth off to end of WH for a woods experience of her own. Talk of hiking in July in the UK spurs her to try out her sciatica.

Walk-jog 1:06:16 intensity: (25:00 @1) + (41:16 @2) 4.53 mi (14:38 / mi) +179m 13:02 / mi

Hopkinton Village Greenway, ccw, Slo Go. Another fine day w/o wind. Yesterday's wind killed a Weare driver when a tree came crashing down on the vehicle roof.
