Classic skiing 40:00 [1]

Went to Stoneybrook. No ski or snow mobile tracks. Went across bog, found a set of ski tracks and then 2 snow mobiles passed ahead. Went on the snow mobile trail some, then had to turn around. Back across the bog starting in a swampy area with snow crust breaking/settling - took getting used to. Managed to fall in woods minimizing contours about 75 yds from car. Had to take a ski off. Falling felt like post-op abuse.

Skate skiing 30:00 [2]

At BHS around 2:30. Temp was 25F, as mild as could be. Not much packed/groomed depth but fine & fun, esp with the warmth. Lots of folks on Turee. A parking lot chock full of trucks, snow mobilers as well as ice fishing people.

Note

Post-op f/u yesterday - was given a slow go ahead. "Full effort" as defined
in another week. We spent as much time talking about nordic skiing as hernias, recovery, recurrence etc. For my surgeon, age 68, 1 week to the Canadian Ski marathon and two to the Birkebeiner.

Note

One is much more likely to arrive intact at spring O season pursuing the former. A quick You Tube visit to view insanity and death wish intertwined,
one of several to watch, literally down the mountain.

People are different ! :-)

Walking 30:00 [1]

Walk at BHS around 4pm. Parked next to our former red ’00 Saab 9.5 station wagon now a very first car for our young neighbor. She’d admired it, one thing led to another (incl. what it will take to pass inspection in March) and now it lives directly across the street. Perfect fit for her - a 17 y/o full of smiles, she can now drive her own car to BHS.

XC was freshly groomed but not a single track by 4pm. Turee was quiet, white and cold but little wind. Car ride after with an impressive sunset. Another cold spell beginning.

Note

Went to a NH legislature session on a proposed bill to not hunt coyotes the 5 gestational months of the year. 42/49 states hunt 12 months of the year, trapping, shooting whatever. Apparently MA is one of the 7 give-them-a-break states. A lot of back and forth re impact of hunting (not much), what coyotes actually prey upon with and without habituation to man & domestic animals. Seemingly inflated commentary about killing chickens, cats, small dogs and attacks on humans. The first speaker, a wildlife biologist, spoke for some 20'. The next three were also against the bill - so the first 45' was opposed. Finally the opposition had its chance, including a compassion argument (pups slowly starving to death in their den) that, I don't think, F&G committee members paid much attention to. Impact on deer herd, namely fawns, was a recurring con for the bill. Not a vote day, however.

We once heard coyotes in Nottingcook and enjoyed the of-the-wild howling. But it has been quiet for years. I recall Z&M chasing after two (I think). They returned without evidence of a scrap. I also recall their chasing a black bear we spotted not 40m away. Again, nothing seemed to come of it...not a sound/growl etc.

Weightexercise workout 45:00 [1]

Token but none-the-less useful exercise at the Y.
