run race 39:30 [5] 10.0 km (3:57 / km)
I can, with some relief, check the box on on the annual 10k speed test. Another year under 40 minutes. Felt worse than last year, but conditions were a bit tougher, and we didn't have PH to hide behind or Reid to heckle. But I had Duane, and together we did what we had to do. We ran side by side for the first 5 k or so banking some time, but he looked smooth and comfortable and I was headed for a bad spell and so I let him go and worked to keep it together on my own.
There are few places more desolate than the 6k marker of a 10k race. In all of life I think. Maybe all of existence. I personally think it's easier to run 50k on trails than a 10k road race, and at 6k it becomes clear why. You've pretty much spent all your savings and now it's just a matter of how ugly it's going to get.
I did spend a bit of time dwelling on Balogna's counsel from the evening before: when it gets really bad, dig in, or you'll just have to find another miserable 10k to run under 40 minutes before the end of the year. Gotta say, it didn't help much as a motivator, but it made the 7th kilometre disappear out of memory because I was noodling too much on the consequences of doing another 10k road race this year.
The last 2k were the usual tough sons of bitches they always are, but as I came around the last corner and saw the finish clock turn over to 39:00 I knew I could notch up another year. I drooled convincingly at the line and then staggered over to get some Kroketten from the meatball truck.
Thanks Duane for all the help.
