run 1:25:00 [3]

solo SMT classic route with Trix.

Note

Super coming to the valley Sunday morning. We leave from the hostage at 9. Put your hangover soviet on. That's a real thing. A hangover soviet. Think about it.

Gym 1:00:00 [4]

Took it a bit easier this morning

Thursday Nov 28, 2013 #

run hills 58:00 [5]

5 times Artaban. Would have done more, but I had to duck into the woods to avoid Ranger Paul and his anti-dog ways.

He was plowing Artaban, which is already icy. The proposal to put a Montessori school for adolescents at the Maplewood Centrre looks all the more foolhardy on a morning like this.

Gym 55:00 [5]

Reproduced the first workout from 9 weeks ago. I am, officially, getting stronger.

Tuesday Nov 19, 2013 #

run intervals 59:00 [5]

First run of the season at chedoke. It seems like everyone else was surprised by the early onset of darkness. Aberdeen loops 3 x 1 then 2 x 2. I had to cut out of the second double on account of my intestines went all Turbo on me.

run 1:20:00 [3]

Felt flat and listless. So took it easy with Trix. Met Katey Mac and Mikey about half way and they felt flat and listless too.

run 1:55:00 [3]

Smt with tarno, griz and turbo. And the hounds. Perfect late summer morning. This is a bit of an eccentric crew. Turbo had to take his usual dump in the woods (appropriately buried). But Tarno made us hold a plank until Turbo finished with his business and caught up to us. Turns out Turbo feels no need to rush in these circumstances. Griz cracked, but Tarno and I held out until Turbo made it up the hill with a bit of an extra spring in his step.

Raid the Hammer Oakville version with Katey Mac and Bender. I haven't really come out and stated this before, but I have secretly been harbouring a bucket list item: at some point in my life I wanted to be the guy that pulled Bender on a tow rope--on that one day when fitness failed him--around a race course. Well today was my day. Cross that item off the list. I'm pretty sure Dang got pictures.

That said, Bender navigated capably and Kate? Well, on two separate occasions--just as predicted by PH--she was indeed towing both of us. Had a blast; terrific race Patrick!

Gym 1:00:00 [5]

I'm past the point where I'm sore after every workout with Conor, but that doesn't make it any less intense.

Note

heading out for SMT tomorrow, but easy and no more than 1:15 given the Raid on Sunday.

run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Build up to the R2H 10k

run race 39:30 [5] 10.0 km (3:57 / km)

I can, with some relief, check the box on on the annual 10k speed test. Another year under 40 minutes. Felt worse than last year, but conditions were a bit tougher, and we didn't have PH to hide behind or Reid to heckle. But I had Duane, and together we did what we had to do. We ran side by side for the first 5 k or so banking some time, but he looked smooth and comfortable and I was headed for a bad spell and so I let him go and worked to keep it together on my own.

There are few places more desolate than the 6k marker of a 10k race. In all of life I think. Maybe all of existence. I personally think it's easier to run 50k on trails than a 10k road race, and at 6k it becomes clear why. You've pretty much spent all your savings and now it's just a matter of how ugly it's going to get.

I did spend a bit of time dwelling on Balogna's counsel from the evening before: when it gets really bad, dig in, or you'll just have to find another miserable 10k to run under 40 minutes before the end of the year. Gotta say, it didn't help much as a motivator, but it made the 7th kilometre disappear out of memory because I was noodling too much on the consequences of doing another 10k road race this year.

The last 2k were the usual tough sons of bitches they always are, but as I came around the last corner and saw the finish clock turn over to 39:00 I knew I could notch up another year. I drooled convincingly at the line and then staggered over to get some Kroketten from the meatball truck.

Thanks Duane for all the help.
