run race 1:54:50 [5]

Geez, that hurt. Decided to go out with Bender and Hansel. Bender had worked out a perfectly foolproof plan of doing the first lap of the Toad in 55 minutes and then--and here's the genius part--running a negative split for the second lap to finish in under 1:50. Cunning. Not one to work out Byzantine schemes like that on my own, I figured glomming on would be just the ticket.

Course I had also made the last minute decision to wear the vff Treks for this race just to knock that off the list of foolish things you should do once in your life.

The footwear worked out fine and I was able to bang out a few fast early kilometers, but by 5k Bender and Hansel had pretty much shrugged me off and I switched into trudge mode.

Interestingly, as I came through the start-finish at the end of lap 1, wouldn't you know it, but my time was showing as 55:10. Well if Bender couldn't follow his own damn plan, I could sure give it a go.

But the whole negative split thing--part two of Bender's wretched scheme--rather suddenly began to look, well, stupid. So back into trudge mode. And eventually I realized that the end of nigh. Just under 1:55. A smidge under an hour for the 2nd loop.

The balls of my feet and my calves are, predictably enough, plenty pounded, but no lasting damage. Certainly nothing that would qualify as an injury. Not sure if I would race in the vffs again, but doing it today was satisfying.

So even if I was 11th in the 40+ category, I'm pretty sure I was the first right handed, bearded, blue capped runner over 50 in five finger shoes and I'll take that.

Note

Turkey workouts all loaded along with the Garmin links. The cycling was easy and slow, but the setting was singularly fantastic. It's a marvellous place, on the very edge of being overrun by the tourist trade, but where in the world isn't. We had a terrific time. Pics:
