Note

Wanted to share a little pet project that I have been working on.

As some of you may know I am a GIS major and I'm always looking for ways to develop useful ways to use it. I've also been thinking of ways to have GIS and Orienteering maps work together.

Lately I have been developing a geodatabase for Chester County which is where I am from. After finding that they have already processed data for the whole county such as contours, trails, streams, and ponds. I quickly downloaded all applicable data and put all of these features into a geodatabase. There is still a lot of work to be done with this map but i will update the PDF and link as I make edits. This is a little sample of what that data will look like.

Some of my future goals:

1: To develop ArcGIS online application that you could use with your phone to make orienteering maps. The nice thing about this is that everything will be together and viewed by everyone. I haven't really seen too many orienteering club mapping communities. Hopefully when I figure out what i really want to do I can launch it and teach a few people how to use it. This could make mapping much easier and faster. It would also allow for easier updates since everything is in one place.

2: Batch analyze all available LiDAR data. This would just further refine the existing data. Hoping to add features such as open fields and cliffs. Just things that would make mapping easier.

3: Finding ways to covert ArcGIS feature classes to OCAD for course setting or mapping. Also need to find the fastest way to convert OCAD to ArcGIS feature classes to take advantage of existing mapping.

4: One of the things I should start with is just creating a symbol library is ArcGIS of the basic orienteering symbols. Maybe one night when I'm free and have a few beers handy I can sit down and pound this out.

5: Long term goal is to put everything on a server and host it with Arc portal or something that people can openly map and share there work on.

Just kind of thinking out loud on here to help me think of ideas and bring some ideas to life. Still got a lot of things to work out.
