Running 6:38 [3] 1.01 km (6:34 / km)

Warming up inside the tiny quarantine area. The GPS track is hilarious :).

Orienteering race (Italian Sprint Champs) 15:28 [4] 3.76 km (4:07 / km) +109m 3:36 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: Flite BW 0612

9th. Winning time 13:46.

Had a good look at the most likely route out of the start which could kind of be seen from the quarantine so at least I had a good idea on the direction. Had also looked at street view so I knew what to expect in terms of technical small houses versus the old city races that I prefer.

Started off well before I bit of a mistake to 3 where I just didn't read the control description properly. Lost around 10 seconds because I just didn't see the control. In areas like this it was really important to have a solid idea what you were looking for because features were very close together.

Slight wobble out of 7 where the taped off area at the bottom of the hill didn't really make sense to me. It was a garden but on the map you couldn't see the out of bounds. Probably should have done a better job here of knowing what to expect.

Wrong route choice to 9. Went north instead of the south route choice so lost a bit of time when comparing to Matt. Map flip was reasonably straight forward. Then made a mistake to 11. Was approaching from the north and the angle that I went didn't seem to match with what it looks like on the map. I ended up close to the stairs on the eastern side of the feature. Should have had a much better idea going into this one! 17-18 there were also other route choices that could have been quicker.

Overall a great experience and very nice map. I really enjoyed running here and I'm not used to Italian small towns. Final result should have been a bit better, but I have a few things to improve on technically before WOC. The pressure of a race with a quarantine was good preparation and I'm really glad that I did it! Definitely on the list for next year if I have the time.

Sickness prevention. Looking forward to Italian Sprint Champs this weekend. Also going to trial my race preparation sessions this week which Marko has suggested.

Orienteering race (Canterbury Urban) 44:40 [3] 9.81 km (4:33 / km) +102m 4:20 / km
slept:5.5 shoes: Nike Pegasus 33 0317

Pretty cool area. Basically a very long sprint race with the first part kind of park terrain with university buildings and the second part technical university housing.

A few extra paths, buildings and changed vegetation on the map had me a bit confused at times because it seems as if the map hasn't been updated in a while. When I caught Paul it also threw me off slightly and I made a mistake to 18 and 26. Silly really. Definitely need to get some more practice in areas like this in the next month. The longer courses aren't ideal though because you can't push at 100% all the way like you might in a sprint race.
