Frigid Infliction with Meghan Smith and Erik Grimm as Untamed Madathlete.com 1 and Dave Romilly Dave Lamb as Untamed Madathlete.com 2.

Standard routine- Maps at 4:30am, start at 5:00. 30 minutes of frantically transposing plotted points from the USGS map to the resort map where possible and removing skins from the skis (bad guess).

The first leg of the race was all down hill stopping for 2 CPs along the way and we sort of messed up the first one probably because of the where we transposed it. The last bit into the TA was comical as an ATV had been down the trail and the snow had transformed overnight making a snowplow virually useless. People where flying off the trail everywhere including me.

Trek 1:30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi) +400ft 37:50 / mi
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 3

Change into trails shoes/yaktraks for the postholing section in thigh deep snow with 4 other teams including another 3 person co-ed with a female navigator. Not sure who she was. Impossible to make any time on anyone in the deep snow.

7 AM

Snowshoe 3:20:00 [4] 5.0 mi (40:00 / mi) +1900ft 29:25 / mi
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 3

Change over to snowshoes with 3 other teams and proceeded to hit the next points to the SE in a ccw rotation. Some very cool terrain and deep snow. We took turns breaking trail with a 2 person co-ed who had bigger shoes than we did and they seemed to stay on top better because of it.

At around the halfway point of the loop we found a set of tracks from a few days ago and followed them to the next CP. Immediately after we ran into the NH Trail Vets coming at us on a cw rotation so we were able to follow their tracks for the remaining points. They had a much steeper approach to the highest point and we practically skied down their tracks from there on our shoe tails. Tons of fun!
10 AM

Back country skiing 3:40:00 [3] 10.0 mi (22:00 / mi) +3000ft 17:08 / mi

We arrived at the TA slightly ahead of team 4, put our skis and skins on and took off towards our first point, CP 17. We seemed to be traveling pretty well but struggled to find the point for nearly 20 minutes in the maze of trails around it which allowed team 4 to catch us and punch the point before us. Just before the next CP DR noticed that he had lost a skin somewhere so we wasted a few more minutes doublebacking for it.

Things finally started to click and by the time we hit our 4th CP I was no longer seeing tracks around the controls and I knew we were in the lead. We collected the remaining CP's and the 3 optionals (RDs term for them was Leg of Lamb) then enjoyed a fun downhill ski without skins back to the finish just before 2pm. MS .gpx track to follow possibly.

Felt pretty tired at the end, no need to tele ski afterwards this year. I wish Bolton Valley was closer. The whole area (BV, Trapps, Stowe, Catamount Trail, Long Trail) is such a playground, I'd love to BC ski there more often.

See you at the USARA's in Maryland!
