45.339km with 1074m climb in 2:58:00. 3 hour Mtbo score. Either side of Usk between beacon and Talybont on river Usk. Stat just north on Allt above Llangorse lake. Drizzly day.
Funny day started badly as I realised the far side of Newport that I had no cycling clothes or helmet. Mad dash back home and get to event 15 mins before last start. Was not sure of health dodgy stomach yesterday and this morning.
Decided on clockwise and getting the hill out of the start done first. Bridleways would also be more down this way I thought. Knew not realy on it going up first hill failed to ride it having to push a number of times. Greasy conditions not helping but legs not realy there. Having taken half an hour to get the controls over the hill decided to skip 10 pointers along canal so good bit of road riding just picking up 24, 25 and 22. Left upper leg starting to hurt for no good reason any time I tried to push the pace so only realy 90% effort today. Zig zaging 15, 27, 26, 16, 17. Saw others going opposite way through here. Thought my route was good up road down bws but lots of other options being taken. 1 min lost befor 26 obvious track not what I needed. Downs from 27 and 17 were rough with some pushing down. Dave Hooper just behind from 26 and all the way through Brecon and out the bw after till his mech broke. All I heard was lots of expensive chain noise followed by swearing. Dave catching me and staying with me for 40 mins shows the slower pace I was doing compared to normal. Timing good for final loop some good road climbs and technical decent but at least rideable. Lots of gates on final bw but faster than I remembered it from going the other way before. Relativly easy finish with 2 mins to spair.
Surprised to be up in 3rd ahead of Nuno how road 5km more than me. Ian 37 points ahead but Clair Dalimore had the win with a better route around final few controls 38 points ahead of me.
Good to get out and I at least avoided any falls and aggravating arm. Not so good not to be able to go full effort yet though.
