orienteering 1:09:00 [3] 4.4 km (15:41 / km)
This was the last day of the WOC tour, Open 1 course. Pretty bad orienteering, mostly due to searching for controls in tall ferns (over my head) on green hillsides... Somewhat disappointing finish of a good streak of orienteering, but it was neat to orienteer on the Relay map, and sad to be leaving!

Friday Aug 4

orienteering 1:12:00 [4] *** 6.3 km (11:26 / km)
21c
Today I ran the Open 1 course of the WOC Tour (6.3km). The beginning was rather technical, with several controls very close together in a detailed area. I messed up one control a bit (probably 4 min mistake), and another one slightly (probably 1 min). Of course, there probably were other, subtler (hesitation type) mistakes, but these 2 the most obvious. Other than that, this was a pretty good race for me, ending up ahead of Hillary and less than half of the leading men on the course.

Thursday Aug 3

orienteering 55:00 [3] 5 km (11:00 / km)
WOC Tour, Open 2 course.

Wednesday Aug 2

orienteering 46:46 [3] 4.4 km (10:38 / km)
Went out onto the Relay Model event course--this was a very good run for me. Some things that could have been better: less hesitation at times, faster running, and also had about 30s to 1 min mistake on a control (in the control circle or very close by).

Tuesday Aug 1

orienteering 33:47 [4] 3.7 km (9:08 / km)
Ran another Open 2 course in the WOC Tour series. Had a big mistake on the 2nd control (the terrain was green, so I ran in the path of least resistance and managed to get off the map), but recovered quickly, and finished the race well. This could be my first race this year? under 10 min per km.

Monday Jul 31

orienteering 1:02:03 [3] 5.1 km (12:10 / km)
Today is WOC rest day, and I did the open course 2 (i.e. short advanced).

Sunday Jul 30

orienteering 1:06:00 [3]
This was a pretty exciting day of the long qualification races, which turned to be rather disappointing in the end for the North American teams. There were two vehicles ferrying our starters to the start area quite early, with the rest of us (non-running team members and officials) that left in the van straight to the finish arena a little bit later. Sandra was one of the first runners to start the race (incidently, it was probably highly non-random that the 3 USA women recieved exactly the same start times for the middle and long qualifier? the start times were different for the men). Sandra appeared about 20 min behind the first starters (probably about 10 min longer in the running time), with about 63 min time, having unfortunately missed a close-by control before a long leg without realizing it. About 20 min after Samantha finished, out of qualifying range, but with a solid result. It sounded like she was happier with this year's performance at WOC vs last year. The next in were Eric, Pavlina, and Eddie--all having reasonable races, Eric having lost a few minutes due to a mistake from an overzealous official. Finally, about half an hour later due to his late start time, Clem appeared in the finish shute, unhappy with his performance in a few later controls.

After the races were over, runners left, and a few of us ran the WOC Tour courses. Athletes who did not qualify for the Finals and officials were allowed to run the open courses for free. I did reasonably well in the open Course 2 (4.2?km).
