Munster Orienteering Championships 2009, Toureen Wood, Tipperary.

Position: 1st!

After not having the best preparation for this race I started with the ambition to become Munster Champion, if it was any other race (apart from IOC) I probably would have given it a skip. I really didn't think that I had a chance of winning.

I was last starter in M21L with a 4 minute gap to the guy in front, there were more spaced out in front of me, so the plan was to catch my 4 min man (Hugh Cashell) and then work on the next one.

At the 1st control I did lose a few seconds, in a bit early and to 2 I climbed a few extra contours. This was my first taste of the terrain and my first impressions were that it was rough and that I was a bit concerned about my speed over it, me being a bit on the careful side. Might have been slightly off again for 3 but no major time lost. Contoured ok to 4 and then across two roads to get to 5 where I might have again lost a few seconds in the circle, just went slightly past it before I spotted it behind the boulder. 6-7 were fine and then back uphill to 8. Didn't feel the best going uphill today but it was on the way to 8 that I caught up with Hugh. 9 was back downhill and then across the first big gully to 10. Found the route to 11 rough and my direction might not have been the best. Then at 11 I was a bit stuck trying to figure out which route choice was the best to 12, chose the option to the right. Didn't particularly like the uphill to 13 and liked the first part of the leg to 14 even less, uphill. At this point I didn't feel the best, stopped and started a few times, was thinking a bit too much how I was feeling. Felt better once I got over the hill and onto the ride down to 14. To 15 I pushed hard and had the best split I think. Contouring again to 16 but I was slightly too low. On my route choice to 16 I went past some lovely looking trees, they were on their own in green grass. Downhill then to 17 and 18, bit hesitant before 17, stopped early but got 18 ok. Again it was uphill to 19 but I had an idea where it was as I saw it on the way to 2. Decided on the way to 19 that to 20 I would go out to the road and drop down, saw a good attackpoint, turning circle, on the map which I nearly missed due to the overprinting of the control numbers. Came in slightly to the left of 20 but not much time lost. Out again along a drain to 21. This control was hidden in a pit but I found it fairly ok. Met David Healy here and stayed with him until we went different routes to 28. 22 was easy and then so was 23 but I slightly overshot it. 24-27 were straight forward enough. Hadn't really looked ahead and I was assuming that as the course had 28 controls that it wouldn't be too far from 27. I was proved very wrong when I opened the map up to look for 28, it was miles from 27. Saw a left or right track options, chose right. This started off climbing where I didn't feel the best but tried since I didn't want to lose out to Dave. Once the climb was over it was fast running slightly downhill on a big track where I went as fast as I could. Passed Colm O'Halloran (Ailbhe mentioned catching Colm to me before I started but I didn't believe I could) coming onto the track and then saw Dave come out of the trees onto the track so there didn't seem to be a big difference in the routes. Dave then went into the forest to contour to the control but I stayed on the track to attack the control from below, from a small path, and this worked out faster. Then it was downhill back onto the track to sprint for the line.

Definitely happy with my race. The only time lost was minimal, in the circle a few times, and route choices worked out fine. Was very surprised to find that i'd won by 9 minutes. I think the fact that my run was clean was the main factor in the difference. I only had 2 fastest splits, but I think that everyone else lost time at controls, when I was consistant.

If I had been sick and not been fit then I don't think I could have done what I did today, so I'm happy with how training is going at the moment.

Garmin said I ran 9.58km but I only started that between no's 9-10, was 73minutes from there with 751m climb.

Technically I reckon i'm still not better. Didn't feel too bad this morning but stomach has been a bit off this afternoon. Since I missed MOC last year due to torn ankle ligaments, don't feel but I have no other choice but to run tomorrow. So i'm trying to be positive and look forward to my pre-race breakfast of porridge and that my stomach will be perfect on the day. It'll have fun i'd say taking the energy gel half way round the 12 or so km!

Again off work but feeling better today. Had a very goods night sleep last night, so much better than Wednesday night. Appetite today has been good, was able to taste the toast I had for breakfast. Lunch and dinner were proper meals too, and I ate plenty. So hoping for further improvement tomorrow and then there might be at least better than a 50/50 chance of running on Sunday. No point in taking part unless i'm able to give it everything. Didn't feel too good after getting my gear together to go home so I rested a bit after, not a good sign.

Still not better today. Last night was awful, didn't sleep at all well, woke up every hour i'd say. So got myself off to the doctor. He checked me out but didn't find anything specific wrong, thought it might be some sort of viral infection. Must take it east and get lots of rest for the next few days.

Still sick. Not a great day. Stomach really hurt at dinner time, had started cooking but didn't finish what I was making, stomach got in the way of things. Basically all I had between lunch and bed was a yogurt.

Felt better in the morning but in the afternoon my stomach started to hurt. Had trouble getting to sleep with it and then didn't have the best nights sleep. Was able to eat. No training this week I reckon.

Didn't feel great when I came home after the orienteering yesterday, legs felt fine but the rest of teh body didn't. Looks like i'm after pushing myself too far and am now overtired. Feeling crap today, planned cycle is off, although weather isn't looking great outside. Had around 11 hours sleep last night and will need something similar tonight to recover.
