Orienteering race 40:11 [5] *** 5.5 km (7:18 / km) +125m 6:34 / km
ahr:172 max:188 23c shoes: VJ Falcons 09

JK, Day 2, Cookworthy Forest North, Middle Distance.

Took the lower route to the 1st control, was probably not the fastest route but got the control ok. 2nd control was just a matter of checking each drain as I crossed it in the dark green. Lost a small bit of time at 3, main reason was that i'd managed to cover my map with mud and I thought the control was in rough open, that's what the mud on the white looked like to me! At 5 I went to a control to the right but only a few seconds lost. Next few controls were fine. Felled area to get out to the track from 11 towards 12 was tough going. Lost a few seconds on 13 as I ended up on the wrong side of a fallen tree which blocked my route to the control. 18 was another control where I lost time, probably the most on teh course, went straight but overshot it, relocated off open area. Last few controls were fine. Finish was tough, uphill through field to last control, and then flat to the finish.

Happy with the run again.

Garmin says I ran 6km and climbed 796m!

Orienteering warm up/down 16:31 [2] 1.05 km (15:44 / km)

Jogged the walk to the start, a muddy track for most of the way. Had a few minutes more than I thought I had so did more running and stretching.

12 PM

Orienteering warm up/down 18:52 [2] 1.12 km (16:51 / km)
ahr:116 max:144 shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Jogged up the hill from the car-park to the start, and then had to pin on my number which was at the top of the hill. Ran around the pre-start area for a while. Did a good bit of stretching too. Last thing I did before I started was that I got a twig to clean some of the mud off the soles of my shoes, had picked up a fair bit between the car and the start.

JK, Day 1, Sprint, Bicton College

Wasn't sure how to treat this sprint race beforehand but decided to give it 100% to see if it was worthwhile trying at the Irish Champs in a few weeks.

1st control went ok but to the 2nd my direction was off a bit. 3rd was fine but going to 4 I went to the right of the trees and through a gate. Checked map to realise that I needed to be in the forest and on a path so back through the gate and over a style. The next few controls went ok. Actually all the rest of the controls were fine. Think my route choices were ok. 18 was a bit pointless, a dog leg, especially as the control was the bottom of 2 flights of steps. Finish wa tough as it had started to rain.

Happy with my run and that no pain during or afterwards. Shoes also worked out well.

Garmin says I ran 3.97km and climbed 102m.

Did a bit of jogging around the car-park, the main running element with Hugh. Also some walking and talking.

Blennerville Run.

Left this one a bit too late to write up, a week later. Don't remember much about the run. Wasn't the best evening, but weather had improved from earlier.

The boat parked at the bridge had come loose and drifted across the canal, blocking it, since it was still tied at the front. Looked a bit on the strange side. Water was high again, but not as high as yesterday, tide hadn't fully come in though when I was running.

Ground was still sticky.

Blennerville.

Serious amount of rain today so underfoot conditions were sticky. I've never seen the water in the canal so high, up to the edge of the bank. Due to a high tide as water was very close in all the way along the shore. Weather had dried up a bit for the run which was nice.

Legs and body felt tired during the day so wasn't looking forward to running. Didn't keep an eye on the pace on my watch until i'd got back onto the end of Cockleshell Road, was 20 seconds behind the 5.15 min/km pace at that stage. Got that back by the Basin taking it handy, did feel a bit tired though. Pushed hard from the Basin to the car, avg pace was sub 4.30 min/km and had no trouble doing it, legs felt fine, no pain was the important thing.

Road warm up/down 25:00 [1] 1.9 km (13:09 / km) +100m 10:25 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Walk up to the start of today's orienteering event. Mostly walking but last bit uphill I jogged which warmed me up.

Rosskerrig (Sheep's Head), Cork League.

Plan for today was to take it easy, make sure that the calves survive. Had a compression thing on my right and a Skins Powersox on my left inside my o-socks!

1st control was handy enough, big lake to go off. Furze was a bit troublesome, especially when you dive headfirst into some.
2, 3 and 4 were all uphill, so not that much fun.
5 was uphill and then downhill running in a marsh all the way.
Then there was 6. Felt like I was going to fall off a cliff and die between 5-6. Didn't know that going straight up the hill was the correct way to go. Instead I was going up and down cliffs, not pleasant. I wasn't the only one who didn't know better.
6-11 was a nice loop, runnable and no problems.
11-12 was back across the cliffy area, chose a route to the right, going downhill, not too bad but probably better to go up and over again, didn't help that I made a right mess of it, overshot too high, lost the best part of 10 minutes based on my Garmin track.
13 looked straight forward but the number of re-entrants with cliffs on both sides between the controls wasn't funny.
14 was ok, but thing control on wrong crag or mapped wrong.
15 wasn't great but no mistake.
Saw a control as I descended on a track and headed for it to realise that it wasn't the finish, so turned right and over a hill before down to the finish.

Happy that I survived. For the record I lost 7 minutes on 6 and 12 minutes on 12 to the fastest split, to Brian Corbett, made the map. 7 minutes to 6 was fair enough but if I hadn't blown 12 by 10 minutes then I'd have had a decent enough split.

Garmin said I ran 8.58km.

Warm down after todays orienteering. As it was on the road I mainly walked with a few sections of jogging. Felt fine after the run.
