Note
(injured)

Had physio this evening, arranged it at session last week. Thought it would be to work out the kinks after the weekend, but lot more than a kink to fix. Will be on the bike for a couple of weeks, so fingers crossed i'll be back running for Irish Champs.

Orienteering race 33:37 [5] **** 5.9 km (5:42 / km)
ahr:172 max:181 shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

JK Relay, Leg 1, Braunton Burrows.

On the start line i'd Shane, Nick, Colm and Kevin for company. Calf was not feeling good so I was just out to finish. At times during the coures I was in a good but of pain and afterwards it wasn't good. Pretty depressed finishing due to the damage I did to myself but happy with result.

1st control was fine as the the 2nd. 3rd control was a joke, one box and it was a common control, melee, really like Orientshow in Portugal last year. Lost time here.

Lost a small bit of time at 11 and got direction wrong to 15 so more time lost. Kevin was ahead and then behind me for most of the course, so staying ahead of him at the end was a goal. Shane finished just ahead of me and Nick was not too far ahead of him.

Garmin said I ran 6.79km and climbed 188m.

JK, Day 3, Braunton Burrows, Classic.

What a crap day.

Caught my 3minute man at the 1st control and was with him until 2. Didn't get either too cleanly but ok considering. No. 3 was an absolute disaster, started in the right direction then swung left and thought I was in the right area, made things fit, finally relocated off the water station near 17. 14 was the next control where I lost a bit of time, probably lost some time in a few circles but nothing serious. I stopped slightly short of 14 but no real time lost. 17 should have been easy but lost a bit of time again. Made a mistake at 23, knew where I was for most of the leg but just lost concentration I think. The last few controls went fine. 2 lads caught me at the 2nd last control and they punched the last control ahead of me, for some reason they didn't take the direct route to the finish so I gained a few seconds on them.

Very disappointed with the run today, mainly because of the mistake at 3. Running wise I was fine, but pain in my calf limited my running speed, but not seriously. Not that tired afterwards but still had pain.

Orienteering race 40:11 [5] *** 5.5 km (7:18 / km) +125m 6:34 / km
ahr:172 max:188 23c shoes: VJ Falcons 09

JK, Day 2, Cookworthy Forest North, Middle Distance.

Took the lower route to the 1st control, was probably not the fastest route but got the control ok. 2nd control was just a matter of checking each drain as I crossed it in the dark green. Lost a small bit of time at 3, main reason was that i'd managed to cover my map with mud and I thought the control was in rough open, that's what the mud on the white looked like to me! At 5 I went to a control to the right but only a few seconds lost. Next few controls were fine. Felled area to get out to the track from 11 towards 12 was tough going. Lost a few seconds on 13 as I ended up on the wrong side of a fallen tree which blocked my route to the control. 18 was another control where I lost time, probably the most on teh course, went straight but overshot it, relocated off open area. Last few controls were fine. Finish was tough, uphill through field to last control, and then flat to the finish.

Happy with the run again.

Garmin says I ran 6km and climbed 796m!

Orienteering warm up/down 16:31 [2] 1.05 km (15:44 / km)
ahr:114 max:159 shoes: VJ Falcons 09

Jogged the walk to the start, a muddy track for most of the way. Had a few minutes more than I thought I had so did more running and stretching.

12 PM

Orienteering warm up/down 18:52 [2] 1.12 km (16:51 / km)
ahr:116 max:144 shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Jogged up the hill from the car-park to the start, and then had to pin on my number which was at the top of the hill. Ran around the pre-start area for a while. Did a good bit of stretching too. Last thing I did before I started was that I got a twig to clean some of the mud off the soles of my shoes, had picked up a fair bit between the car and the start.

Orienteering race 18:16 [5] ** 3.2 km (5:42 / km) +40m 5:22 / km
ahr:177 max:185 24c shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

JK, Day 1, Sprint, Bicton College

Wasn't sure how to treat this sprint race beforehand but decided to give it 100% to see if it was worthwhile trying at the Irish Champs in a few weeks.

1st control went ok but to the 2nd my direction was off a bit. 3rd was fine but going to 4 I went to the right of the trees and through a gate. Checked map to realise that I needed to be in the forest and on a path so back through the gate and over a style. The next few controls went ok. Actually all the rest of the controls were fine. Think my route choices were ok. 18 was a bit pointless, a dog leg, especially as the control was the bottom of 2 flights of steps. Finish wa tough as it had started to rain.

Happy with my run and that no pain during or afterwards. Shoes also worked out well.

Garmin says I ran 3.97km and climbed 102m.

Orienteering warm up/down 17:14 [2] 1.02 km (16:54 / km)
ahr:121 max:150 shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Did a bit of jogging around the car-park, the main running element with Hugh. Also some walking and talking.
