Foret du Grand Roc Sud

Same area as yesterday but at 1:10000, around where contrls 5-9 were. Jogged to the start triangle from the car and after that once I started orienteering things went really badly again. Even the first one I went to was troublesome, after that I was mainly walking or slow running with problems still occuring. Biggest problem was 125, think I passed very close to it and then went all over the place!

Last few went ok but they were comparatively straightforward. Really not getting this France thing.

France World Cup, Long Distance
Le Grand Roc 1

I rarely feel like giving up, but felt that urge a few times today, just didn't go well, lots of mistakes and body wouldn't co-operate. Blood sugar mightn't have had the best control though today, too low despite 2 energy gels. Need to work on that in future long races.

Things didn't go well at the first control, lost time in the circle, but did find a feature that wasn't mapped, so not pleased with that. Seamus caught me 2 mins and left 1 ahead of me. Caught him back up on the way to 2 with a slightly better route in. After that I was with him until the long leg to 10 where we went different routes, mine probably wrong. The butterlfy was wrong and I made a few more small mistakes here. My orienteering in the circle was brutal today.

Made it to the spectator control but the next one I lost the plot again, and at that stage I was basically crawling. Did the last loop very slowly and finally finished.

Model Event for WC, 1:15000

Ran the course with Hugh, but we went finish, 16, 15, 14, start, 1-13, then back to the car.

Got the 1st control we went to wrong, went too far right. I was also a bit confused at number 4 for some reason, and also a bit unsure at 7. The rest of the course was fine and it was a nice run, cleaner area than yesterday.

Vieil Annecy, WRE Sprint

It was a night sprint, so head torch was on. At the pre-start at around -1 till I was called I realised that i'd forgotten my control description holder, so a quick sprint back to the bag solved the problem.

Messed up the 1st control, didn't understand my descriptions properly! Was also a bit clueless leaving 1 heading to 2. Lost some time on a couple of routes later, but not much, and standing above 7 also cost a few seconds.

Overall I was pleased enough with my running.

Cret de Bénevént

1st attempt at orienteering in this type of terrain. Found it very rough, branches on the ground made life very difficult so didn't like it at all. The further I went the more I started to dislike the area. Orienteering wasn't too bad, found what I was looking for, so what happened in the rest of the week then?

Did lose time at one control, went wrong heading towards it, no. 40.

Note
(rest day)

No training today, taking it easy now before training starts in France, tomorrow if i'm lucky, or else on Friday.

Looking forward to this France trip, and my main aim is that the terrain is kind to me.

Might also try hard for once in the sprints, but we'll see.

Lost some blood to tests this morning, doubt that'll have an impact though on my body/performance.

Blennerville + The Spa

Legs felt a bit sore today after yesterdays physio session, particularly my left calf and quad, but I chose to ignore them since I put pain down to physio, not something to worry about.

I actually felt quite relaxed this evening and was conscious not to run too fast, I only wanted to keep the legs active, before hitting France on Thursday.

Stunning evening for running, sunny and no wind.Sun glasses on running and it's nearly October!

Note

Went to the doctor this afternoon to get the Medical Form for competing in France signed. It didn't go as planned, got the form sorted, but ended up getting an ECG done and going back for some blood tests in the morning so fasting at the moment. Doc reckoned that since i'm an "athlete" that it's standard practice to do the heart checks considering the amount of sudden deaths on the sportsfields. So when you bear that in mind i've no problem paying the €70 it cost today.

Heart is fine so that's good:-)
