Controls out for the yellow and orange course before the event. Nice and early so there'd be no pressure. Sill got a bit tight on time getting registration set-up.

Collecting controls after the event today. Got a few in the middle, then got the ones on the hill from the car, and then a short loop around the northern controls.

Legs are tired.

But happy with how the event went.

UCC - Sprint

Took a second or 2 extra to the 1st control than I needed, then took off around the Boole to get to the 2nd control. Was looking for a route to 3, and went right. Past the student centre to 4, round the back. Went down the steps and right to 5. Then back up the same steps to 6. I think 6 was at the Glucksman Gallery but I didn't get a chance to notice it!

7 was behind the Geography building, nice. Then back up around the student centre, past the Quad and then around to 8. Went down the hill to 9 before coming back up, missed the way in so lost a few seconds here. 10 was ok and so was 11. Went north and around to 12, best route as it was at the bottom of the wall. Leaving 12 I turned in too early, so had to correct myself and maybe lost 20 seconds or so. Then a long run downhill to 14. Course was good, starting up high and finishing low.

Got the loop around Castlewhite ok. Then to the timed crossing. Got across the road quickly so jogged for a bit to recover. Was hoping to see part 2 before starting again but the planner was too smart for that.

Hadn't been in Fitzgerald Park for decades, last time I was probably playing on the swings. Went through the arch to the common control but realised that there was a flower bed in the way so had to go around. 20 looked a nice handy jump up if only it wasn't mapped as uncrossable. Lost a few seconds finding the way into 23. And as I ran down the path to 24 I was hoping the control wasn't on the other side of the hedge, should have realised the description was a thicket. The back around to the common control. Looking at the map now I should have turned back on myself but didn't, so a few seconds lost i'd say. Went left to 27. Then left of the Arena. 28 was on the ground when I got there. Then the run around to the throwing cage and buried myself on the run-in, so did Hellsac since we'd the joint fastest split.

Since my WOC feeling has been leaning towards Sprint since Turkey I was hoping for a good result today to re-inforce my thinking on the matter. When I last raced Colm in the north last August I really was off the pace, but happy that i'd the speed today to win and by a decent margin. My avg HR is still only 172, and for a race like this i'd prefer if it was higher. Will try for a higher intensity on Friday at the JK.

Had a nice number of fastest splits, and on others I was very close to being fastest. Definitely time lost out there though.

Went for a lap of the Mardyke track after downloading. Nice surface. Then jogged back to the car. Cold morning.

Muckross

Stuck to my plan and put 7 controls out in the end. Was debating the 2 in the open but decided i'd time to do them and get my dinner before heading into Killarney to help Fergal with registration for the Night-O.

The walk up to the start was a bit steeper than my previous recollection of it! Put out the tapes to it from the track and also the start boxes. Fell on the way down and bruised my palm!

Muckross

Putting out controls for Sunday. After a shocking morning, lots of rain, and a heavy shower as I was loading the car, it turned out to be a nice afternoon in the woods.

Did meet a lot of deer early on, pretty close to control sites, they moved off when I came along, but hoping they don't return to investigate the controls.

No real troubles out there. Met a couple of walkers, but not when i'd the SI box holder camo jacket thing on!

Time is moving time, total time is aroun 1.57. Biggest problem was trying to get stakes into the ground, a lot of stones so that made life difficult. One control I secured with tape to keep it standing!

Note
slept:6.5

Bad nights sleep, that 2nd cup of tea at around 9.30 could have been at fault, but I was thirsty!

Right knee a bit sore today, same old issue, so not that bothered, was sore after running last night but not uncomfortably so.

Have no choice but to rest today, have to be at an Open Day in Listowel until 8, work. Problem is there's a few similar events lined up for April so will have to ensure that training isn't affected too much.

Warm-up with Rob and Rob Jr. Discussed Rob's half marathon he did last Saturday among other things. I didn't ask what session we were doing until I got back into the changing rooms, wasn't really looking forward to it, undecided on the chest, but feeling better today.

No John Barrett this week to pace things so it was left to me as Rob wanted to go a small bit easier and Arthur left me set the tempo. Only knew the half way split on the 1st interval. So just ran what I could. Didn't feel too much under pressure for the early ones. Did struggle from 4 onwards with a stitch and lungs didn't have it. But the times were still good. I led the first 4, same time as Arthur on 5, and only a second or so after him on 6. Pleased with the session, times better than last week and I felt my lungs would affect my running. But recoverys were probably longer as John ran them faster last week, i'm not complaining.

Did a couple of laps of the track slowly first, then 3 laps of the outside. Pace was slow but legs were tired.

Chest feeling a bit better today, maybe at 90%. Didn't feel anything wrong when on the bike so happy with that. Legs felt a small bit tired at the start but once they got going it wasn't too much trouble. Will go to intervals tomorrow.

Banna

As I lay in bed this morning I was debating whether i'd run today or not, woke up around 6.30 for a bit and didn't feel fantastic. Chest doesn't feel 100%, not an infection but not alright. Decided that I needed to get out so headed to Banna.

Started off alright, got 1 ok, but then messed up 2, didn't think the control was going to be on the hill so skirted around the side to find nothing. The next 2 were fine but then 5, a straightforward control, I lost time, minimum of 3 minutes. I slightly overshot the control but realised that when i ran into the fence. Then went back, looked into the depression but saw no control, then headed off looking for it, ended up near 6!!! Then went back again. Had another look in the depression and there the control was shoved up against the sand bank, not in the centre of the depression, it was a small one. Was not impressed over the positioning of the control.

Again at 7 the control wasn't in the right place in the depression, especially as it was a different shape to that on the map. So more time lost here. Then missed 8, should have taken a bearing, maybe 1.20 lost here. Getting into 9 was rough, was walking.

Got the next few alright heading back down the dunes. The control at the bottom, 16 I slightly missed, but relocated from the hill beyond it. Then back up the back beach again, not the easiest of running in the soft sand. Overshot 19, so another 1.20-1.30 lost. Leaving 19 I went over on my ankle, not badly, but not ideal. Then the last two and home.

Was not happy when I finished, chest didn't feel too good, it didn't like the running hard too much. But don't think I made things worse. Also not pleased with how I orienteered today, too much time lost. Under 60 would have been realistic if I'd copped myself on.

Climb is guessed.
