Knockreer Demesne

Ran from Mary's on what was a lovely afternoon for running. Sun was shining and not too cold. So pleasant conditions, and nice to get out during the day for a change.

Right achilles a bit sore before it warmed up and left calf tightened up a small bit while running but not as bad as last Thursday.

Lots of people out walking with a few joggers. Had planned to go around by the lake but had to turn back not long after turning away from the Deenagh River, road was flooded with the lake up. So decided against getting my feet wet, water didn't look pleasant. Water had gone down at the bottom of the circle walk and in the grass areas both sides of the road. But before the flooded section of road the lake was very close to the road on the open area.

So turned around and did a bit more running taking in a short trip up to Knockreer House again to get in some climb and distance.

Took a run around the roundabout too at the end to bring the time over 40.

First time running 2 days in a row since October! Went alright.

Christmas Week so training is kind of based around the usual Christmas activities. Debating what to do at the moment regarding St Stephens Day. I've not run Belgooly for a couple of years, was injured last year with achilles trouble and think i was sick the year before. This year I think I'll base my decision on how I feel after running on Friday. Will depend on motivation I suppose.

Monday - Running
Tuesday - Turbo Trainer
Wednesday - Running
Christmas Eve - Rest
Christmas Day - Running (Goal Mile + Warm-up/down)
St Stephens Day - ???
Sunday - Orienteering (CorkO fun event)

Muckross House

Some very heavy showers going this morning. Skipped both a warm-up and warm-down to limit running. Needed to get changed afterwards and was a bit cold due to the rain.

Started fast. Ended up a bit left of 1 but knew where I was. 2 was ok just not too fast getting out to the road. Attacked 3 from the north, familiar with the AP as on my regular running route, probably better than going straight.
Weaved a bit getting to 4 after leaving the road at the track/path junction.
Next few controls didn't take too much thinking but not liking the limestone areas, wasn't confident running in them.

First issue with the course was number 9, it wasn't there. Since it's a KerryO event and no guarantee that control would be in the right place I spent some time running around the place checking other depressions but no sign of it. Pain in the ass to have a missing control.

Getting back up the hill from 11 was tricky, grass was slippy, but stayed upright. Was in the re-entrant under the line approaching 12 but thought I was in the one to the right of the line, didn't cost time though. 13 and 14 were straightforward. Did some track running then to get to 15 which was ok.

Messed up 16. Not in finding the control but getting to it. No excuses, should have known better. Fecked up getting out to the track for starters, caught myself up in some nice brambles. Then at the end of the leg despite knowing that there was windblow in the area I tried to go straight. Didn't work so took a long way around. Going left on the track was the smart choice which I should have done.

18 was in the wrong place. Found the first crag and then the crag that the control should have been without much difficulty. Climbed up it and no control on top. Climbed down and explored around the other crag. Then back to the crag I tried first and still no sign. Decided that control was also missing and as I was climbing to leave the crag I found the control on the north side of a stone. Not where it should have been.

19 felt funny but hard to be certain, think it might have been in the clearing to the west of it based on distances. I tried what I thought was the cairn.

The first gate on the wall to 20 was blocked so went through the lower one then climbed back up. Control was obvious but think it was probably too high.

Then at 21 I wasn't expecting the control on top of the crag/hill, didn't read the full description. And then the last control and the run to the finish.

Calves did feel a bit tight from around 14 onwards, legs were ok up until then. Since it's Muckross was just a run for me. Tough workout though so good, and no knee issues again, starting to feel more confident about it.

Note
slept:6.0 (rest day)

Taking today off wasn't the plan but after being up so late last night I didn't want to push the body which was lacking sleep by training. Not ideal but probably sensible.

Met Niamh & Killian for dinner.

slept:6.5 (rest day)

Break up day at work so no training.

Long day, probably spent around 12 hours in various pubs around Tralee, and had my dinner at around 2am. Out with my crowd first and then Mary's, so long day.

Killarney

Started pissing rain as I wanted to get changed, got out, and then decided car position needed to be change to stop everything in the boot being soaked by the rain.

Weather was ok running though. Felt a bit chillier than Tuesday though.

No headtorch this evening, discharged the battery on the way to work, but left the torch in the car and only remembered at around 3 so too late to charge. Meant a road run rather than a trail run.

Knee was ok for the run, positive, calves were shocking, negative. Calves tightened up a lot during the run. Lot of foam rolling done afterwards and need to stretch more. Had been considering parkrun but will probably skip that now. Also likely to be a tiring day of celebrating christmas with my work colleages so that'll affect getting up on Saturday morning I suspect.

GOT S05 E08 (remainder) & E09

Still no media player so came up with a solution for GOT, just hook the laptop up to the tv with the HDMI cable. It worked nicely apart from the settings which meant the laptop went to sleep a couple of times during E09. Did have to get off to sort that. Think that meant I hit STOP on the garmin 3 times in total. But got back into the pedalling before STARTing again.

Legs starting to feel a bit better after the weekend. Foam rolling quads and calves last night definitely helped, left calf definitely more noticeable.

Was more difficult to know how long was left since I couldn't press info on the remote. So had to do some mental calculations using average episode time. Finished maybe 5 minutes earlier than I thought it might.

Had fish fingers to look forward to for dinner, been a long time since I had them.

Muckross

Wasn't too bad in Tralee leaving work but different story in Killarney, wet and a bit windy, so tried to get ready to run as quickly as possible.

Had to to 180 very quickly, low path at the start of my usual run had disappeared under debris from the lake, not sure if the lake was still there, but decided to go on the road and cut back onto the path by the bridge.

Went over on my ankle on the next path, left one, and hurt it a couple of more times later in the run. Time to start considering taping training again. The lake crossed onto the grass by Muckross House, line of debris, and again further on by Dundag, reckon around 1m above the road.

Turned to go through the arboretum then. Took the main road downhill to the car park to save the ankle a small bit. And then cut across to the abbey and back towards the car before an extra loop beyond the car park.

Knee wasn't an issue this evening but right quad a bit sore, think it's tired. Also left calf a small bit tight. A bit of work to do on the foam roller later.

HR strap back working with a new battery.
