Some easy warm up on the roads Over the Water in Cahersiveen. Legs feeling ok, some on my own, and then more with Donal. Strong headwind from the south.

Grass race 28:57 [5] 7.35 km (3:56 / km) +162m 3:33 / km

Kerry Senior Cross Country

Race was 10km and I ran 7.35km so that can only mean one thing, a DNF. Things were going fine until around the 5th lap of 11, right calf got tight but I kept going, got through lap 6 and just at the end of lap 7 I think at the bottom of the hill, BANG. Had to stop and retire. So that only left 7 finishers from a starting field of 8, with 7 of the 8 from Ríocht. Is that more depressing than my injury woes I wonder?

Seriously pissed off with my body, and had the depressing drive back from Cahersiveen to face afterwards. Calf sore for the afternoon. Iced it one back in Killarney and had the dinner eaten.

Up until the calf failure race was sort of going to plan. Tim went off on his own and there was a Kenmare/Iveragh lad, Cillian O'Donovan in 2nd. Then myself and Donal in 3rd. We started to gain on Cillian but just at the bottom of the hill on the 3rd/4th (not certain) my foot came out of the heel of my shoe, mud caught it. So had to stop and force the shoe properly back on and then try and chase Donal down on the hill. I was much stronger than him on the hills up until now but couldn't close the gap. So used some energy there. I did pass Cillian though on the lap after and had maybe 10-20m on him with a few laps left. I was confident in how I was feeling that I would have maintained 3rd, and 2nd would have been a possibility if it were not for the wardrobe malfunction. I wasn't racing at 100%, was running comfortably enough for most of it, running what was around me.

Note

Could my day get any worse???

After a good bit of ice treatment I decided for some heat instead on the calf. Instead of pouring the kettle of boiling water into a hot water bottle I decided to start by pouring it onto my hand!!!

More wardrobe demolition this morning. Started on the one in the middle bedroom and did as much as I could. Tiny bit more to do but need a hacksaw as there's some delicate cutting to be done around electricity cable to shower on the other side of the wall and also some associated plumbing.

Went out to try my usual low route and hit a couple of obstacles, for starters low path at the start was impassable again due to the lake being up again.

Also getting brighter in the evenings so didn't use torch until around Torc.

Had to wade through the lake at the end of the path that heads towards Torc from Muckross House, up to my calves, lake was high. Cold water.

Overall legs felt ok this evening, no pain for a change. But got tired towards the end so skipped the bit out to the road and back after Muckross House, just went straight back.

Wore black Adidas running for the 1st time this evening.

Think I need to up the intensity next week, wasn't too stressed this evening. Lunges in the warm up and in the circuit but didn't cause trouble.

3 circuits this evening, 45 on and 15 recovery for first 2 and then 30 seconds on 10 off for the last one. So he's increasing the amount of work faster.

Back to doing some exercise tomorrow with circuits. Don't think time off i've used to the best, some stretching but maybe could have done more.

Did have a brilliant idea this evening. One of the bedrooms in my house has been dubbed my "training room", I presume that's because i'll keep my bikes there and would use my turbo trainer in the room. Got some shelves in Ikea on Monday for the room to keep stuff on too. But this is my idea for one of the walls. Only thing to consider would be what to have, a map is one option, but thinking something more subtle like contours would be better?

After getting my weekends mixed up, not sure how. But Kerry Seniors are on Sunday, not the week after. So looks like i'll be back in action this weekend. Will go for a run on Friday evening and see how things feel, then maybe do some bike on Saturday before 10k cross country on Sunday.

Didn't get as much stretching done this evening as I would have liked. Got distracted assembling furniture. Was having fun at that.

IKEA
Spent a few hours there today getting a few bits. And luckily all the bits fit into the car on the way home, wasn't sure that would be the case as I was wheeling the cart full of flat pack stuff towards the car as Mary pushed a trolley that was also full. Fitted nicely so success. Did decide to leave one thing on the shelves, a dvd case, way too long.

Must come up with a plan for the week too. Didn't get as much stretching done over the weekend as I wanted.

Monday - Rest
Tuesday - Rest
Wednesday - Rest
Thursday - Circuits
Friday - ?
Saturday - ?
Sunday - ?

Got a text about the x country on Sunday, good idea/bad idea. I'll see how the legs feel later in the week.
