Killarney-Beaufort-Killorglin-Milltown

Damp around home but dry further west, so not that bad a day, and not too cold either. Glad I got out.

Happy enough with how I was feeling. Had a fueling strategy, tested out a Wiggle gel, lemon meringue, tasted like any other gel, gooey. Also think I was a bit more thirsty afterwards than I would be with a High5.

Saw a bike in front of me approaching Killorglin, but passed it quickly, had to go by them again at Astellas after my detour up the hill.

Then just before Milltown there was a Tralee bike in front of me, headed for Tralee, so didn't have the pleasure in passing him out!

Muckross

Shit run. Felt tired after getting back but not the reason for the crap run. Went over on right ankle coming off 1st footbridge. Stopped for a bit to curse at myself but decided to keep going.

Was moving at a decent clip after that, stuck to the road rather than the lake to avoid rough path. Then after 5k left quad tightened up and some pain around right knee. The knee pain I suspect related to running with sore ankle. So overall not a great run.

Despite that I was actually running with some positive training thoughts.

Elvis is some messer, Mary caught him trying to climb up the chimney in the kitchen. His head and paws are a bit on the black side now!!!

(rest day)

Legs coming around. Some stretching last night helped but should have done more, was feeling lazy.

More UCC today but got some extra walking that i'd not anticipated. Warning light came on so dropped car into garage to get checked out. Wet walk too.

UCC for the next few days. Legs tired after last few days, need to do some quad work, they are feeling the worst. Although my big toe appears to be a bit swollen. Kicked a rock near the end on Monday and then dropped an apple on it last night, doesn't help! Not sore though.

Cold day so extra layers, worked a treat. Buff on my face too, which was a good idea.

This spin did the legs some good, they feel better for it. After turning for town I saw some bikes in front of me. That got me warmed up! Chased them down and caught them by Tesco car park. Stuck behind their support car, yes they had one, for the 6 lads. Nothing on Strava yet so can't stalk them that way. Think they were from a Cork club. Decided to pass them out on Port Road, and left them behind.

Rest of the spin went ok but started to get tired towards home, and any incline wasn't easy. Passed a few more bikes coming against me in Fossa on my way back, so popular day for cycling.

HR not right, so need to change battery in the strap.

Foxes Rock
Carlingford

Nice course which was well planned.

Started off grand but contoured lower than 4, so overshot it slightly and had to climb back up to it. Also ended up high for 9 but not by much.

Coming back across the mountain to 10 I saw the crags above (south) of the control which looked of similar shape to the ones in the circle, so had to drop down to 10 then.

11 was probably worst control for me, didn't make much sense of the map after climbing up and crossing the drain.

Ended up high again for 16, a few more boulders on the ground than on the map, all looked equally as big. Got caught then by the big re-entrant with steep cliffs going to 17. Made it down and then had to get back up again.

I knew 18 was coming, a tough time of the course to get this sort of leg, body tired. Ended up going for a straightish route, followed path up the mountain (unmapped, but there were arrows, knew it would go over the top), but then cut below the summit. Could see then the lakes north of the control, and was straightforward from there.

Got the last few controls fine but felt the downhill ones were coming up on me very fast even though I wasn't moving with much speed.

Well worth coming to Carlingford this weekend.

Downhill to the car after finishing. Moved faster today after getting very cold coming back down to Carlingford yesterday.

Carlingford

Boyzone but on a good day of training. Lots of different elements.

Had 2 head-to-head courses against Neil to start out with, did fine on the first one but made a balls of 2 controls on the 2nd course. Then a line-o up the hill, more climb, so was basically walking and admiring the nice ice.

Then 3 star loops, head-to-head with Neil again. Disaster on the 1st one, ended up way too high for the 1st control and way too north for the 2nd. Bad start. Was doing ok on the 2nd loop until slipped on some ice running back to the finish, but at least I got the controls without messing up. And had a much better 3rd loop.

More climb next to get to the start of the control pick. Nice course. Western half of the mountain in sun so was warmer than earlier. Ran mostly ok on this apart from when Jens caught up with me at the summit, 56, the next control didn't do so well.

"Downhill" course to get us home then. Think it was false advertising, felt like a lot of uphill to me! 2 I saw from a bit away but was more luck being at the right height for that. Wasn't too certain of my location. Had caught Fraser here. He went way too high for 4 so I got away from him then. Did make a mistake on 4, didn't drop far enough and overshot.

5 was definitely not downhill. Last few controls after 7 my legs got very tired, was moving slowly downhill, and then just before the last control I kicked a rock with my toe foot. That hurt but nothing re-broken.

Good day of training.
