SHI 2017 Relay - Leg 2 on the 3rd team
Castle Saunderson

On the 3rd team with Kev and Conall. Some discussion about running order between myself and Kev but I decided to run 2nd in order to put less pressure on my legs. That didn't really work out.

Was a strange relay from an Irish perspective as over the 3 legs the 3 teams didn't really lose sight of each other, maybe by a small bit here and there, but not much.

Kev came back just ahead of the other two teams. No pressure on my legs then.

Was worried about my legs, would the calf/achilles hold.

Got 1 ok, and then went left to 2. Orienteered fine through the next few controls but first wobble of sorts was to 9. I hit the track leaving 8 and rather than stay on it for a bit before cutting across I went in very quickly. Way too soon. Saw Conor on the track then that i'd just departed. Kept ahead of him to 9 though. To 10 we both got there at the same time and stayed together across to 11. I got 11 before Conor as he fell.

My lines to 12 and 13 were not good so Conor got a couple of seconds of a gap. This cost him more in the long run as he missed 14 and I didn't.

That left me ahead of Conor at the spectator but not by much. Into the forest for the last loop. I got 17 and 18 ok but was slow I felt to 19. Took it careful due to the green and getting the direction right. Then to 20 I was a bit confused on the road and wasn't certain where I was on it, again like earlier cut in too soon. Passed an english lad here and then stayed ahead of him and the other Irish teams to the finish.

Legs tired afterwards but again i'll take that over pain.

Conall did a good job then on 3rd leg for the 3rd team to be best of the Irish.

Sort of ok to 1, struggled a bit to get into the map. But made a right mess of 2. Came around the hill and just didn't trust where I was, and didn't read the map correctly. Thought the black depressions with purple would look differently to what they did, so thought I was higher. Ended up with a lot of extra climb.

The green between 3 and 4 was green.

Knew I missed 8 but didn't think it was by as much as the GPS is saying.
Scottish lad caught me here so that helped to drag me through the next wet controls.

Then on the way to 10 James Tullie came flying past, I could not match that pace. Was struggling already to keep moving.

Through 10 and 11 the two scots and an english lad pulled away. Really was going slowly now. And struggled to keep moving forward through 13-15. Had been running into the wind since the bottom of the map so that wasn't helping either.

Knew there was a slightly longer leg to 16 and then 17 was an even longer leg. Wasn't looking forward to that. Leaving 16 the scot who passed me earlier was walking up the hill. That was actually a bit of a boost to me, despite being absolutely wrecked. Had 2 gels gone at this stage. Was thinking could I get back the time that I lost between here and the finish to beat this scot. I think this chap hit the wall badly, didn't finish.

At the fence on the way to 17 I got one leg over and needed to compose myself to get the second over, legs felt like cramping. On the way across the hill Cat Taylor passed below me with two lads in tow. I wasn't bothered at this stage as the legs were sort of still moving.

Niall came past at 18-19.

Caught up with Olivia in the forest going to 22. Had a bit of a fall then on the hill down to the last control, right calf felt like it was going to cramp, it didn't.

Overall this was a bad result of sorts. Some time lost early on but fitness was the main issue. Thought I was fit but clearly not terrain fit. I'll take actually finishing with the only problem being tiredness rather than pain.

Happy enough with effort this evening. Some drops of rain near the top, but literally drops. Windy though, felt like a headwind lower down but climb felt sheltered.

I've gotten slower in increments of 10 seconds in the 3 times I've done this climb in the last week. That's probably not a good thing. I'll blame the wind this evening. Legs did feel tired though.

Now for some rest ahead of the weekend.

Still listening to physio's advice, taking it slow and not running for that long, so cutting back on both counts.

Good god it felt like I was going nowhere in a hurry!

Only positive was that the legs behaved themselves so happy that this was the right type and pace of a run. Legs don't have to run again now until Saturday, that'll be an eye opener...

Note

Easy to do a plan this week, all focused on the weekend. Achilles a small bit noticeable this morning. Will stretch a lot this week, I promise.

Plan for the week:

Monday - Cycling
Tuesday - Run (short & v. easy pace)
Wednesday - Cycling
Thursday - Rest
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Orienteering (SHI Long)
Sunday - Orienteering (SHI Relay)
5 PM

Cycling 1:00:19 [3] 33.31 km (1:49 / km) +151m 1:46 / km
shoes: Spiuk ZS11

Out for a quick spin. Definitely some wind, think possibly at my back on the way out. Bit of effort put in but at times on the way back I felt a small bit tired. Also could feel calf and hamstring once or twice, didn't slow me down though.

Roads in Killarney a lot quieter this evening. Probably onto the shoulders of tourist season at this stage.

Bit of extra effort on the road up home as I knew the average speed would be alright.
